A case to answer for SFA and Celtic

1175

Referee Steven McLean saw the incident when Josh Meekings stopped a Leigh Griffiths header crossing the line with his hand.  He was 12 yards away with an unobstructed view.  The blame for getting the decision wrong is entirely his.

We can only speculate as to why he didn’t award a penalty.  At best, McLean didn’t believe the evidence of his own eyes and passed the buck to his assistant Alan Muir, who was around 6 yards from the action but with a less-clear view.

Muir did not see Meekings clear the ball legally.  If he was distracted, and failed to see what happened clearly enough, he should have informed the referee.  If Muir told the referee anything else, this is also a failing.

The SFA have a case to answer. Not fit and proper, to use their parlance.

Notwithstanding the fact that if the rules of the game were followed Celtic would be in the cup final right now, they are out because they failed to deal appropriately with the known qualities of Inverness.

Three goals were lost, all of which were defensive mistakes.  A break downfield which caught the defence cold, a cross from the right which was not properly contested with all defenders in position, and a failure to match a back post run (similar to a recent League Cup final goal conceded to Kilmarnock).  Fatigue may have contributed to the final goal but being down to 10 men was not a contributing factor for the first two.

The game should have been won in the first half but we opened the second period off-pace.

Another matter which should be on the agenda at Lennonxtown today is why didn’t we have the right studs on?

It should be someone’s job to make a decision after the team arrives at a ground on which studs to wear.  If the decision was made, the decision was wrong.  If this process was not followed, it should have been.  Either way there is also a case to answer internally.

Half-time at Lennoxtown: Celtic 0-1 Sevco. Hoops had strong penalty claim just before the break but nothing given.

Got a little treat in the post today, thanks. Wasn’t aware there is a ‘dress code’ on CQN, I have a beard and have done for 27 years but I see that I need to be clean shaven as per ‘executive shaving’ oh well if it’s for CQN then so be it!

A copy of the email I sent to JPT (SLO) this morning ,

I would say good morning John Paul but it’s not :-)

Yet again our club suffers because of corrupt officials and not only with the major decision in the game . Over the course of the season our players are treated differently from players at other clubs , our players are booked after their first tackle whereas other teams players are allowed to foul with no consequence or given a token booking late in the game . Advantages not applied when we break after a foul on our players , our players booked for simulation while other players are not . I could go on and on but you get the idea , several years ago John Reid said we would stand up for ourselves and no longer be at ” the back of the bus ” .

We are not even on the bus now and still we do nothing about it , supporters are sick of paying out hard earned money to see their team cheated .

Sorry for the rant but it’s time the club stood up for itself and it’s supporters .

  8. I take some consolation that the club is reacting to concerns of the support.

However , I seem to recall the club asking for clarification in the past and recall it got us nowhere.

I also get the feeling that the club would be doing nowt and only reacting to the support going tonto?

However, benefit of the doubt given and I await with interest the reply given which I’m sure will be a white wash with guff about referees doing an honest job bla bla bla

The then response from Celtic will be the interesting one and will tell the support if they are prepared to be shafted at will or have grown a pair .

I ain’t holding out much hope

    Unfortunately.

  9. want change? the fans need to stop whining and whinging about referees and the SFA – we all know its a farce , we all know we are at the center of the big decisions against , we are all losing interest in the game blah blah blah – the ONLY way its ever gong to change is by letting PL and the board know we are not satisfied with this consistent blatant cheating . No season tickets , merchandising sales until we make a stand and STOP TAKING IT ON THE CHIN.

WE……..yes , WE are the most powerful club in Scotland and we have allowed the SFA and the press to tell the same lies over and over that it is now believable.

The honest mistake is ours – our mistake not forcing the board to act and act publicly!

Hopefully the Celtic ‘ bored ‘ aren’t agreeing to try out the SFA’ s contraceptive device.

  11. BCW I am disappointed. Celtic should be angry but instead they almost sigh and say sorry but it’s our pesky supporters.

  12. The statement is a start however Lawell should be in front of the cameras tonight calling this cheat out. For the first time in over 40 years of going to Celtic Park I am considering whether to continue supporting the corruption that is Scottish football. I believe I am not alone in this position and Celtic could find that serious damage is done to their core support if there is not urgent change.

  16. Not impressed by the club statement, you do not start asking for clarification by saying it is due to being inundated by others, you state your reasons, it is almost as if they the club have been forced into making this public statement, utterly pathetic.

  18. The Tonev decision is by far the worst I have ever seen in Scottish football. Compare to the Cifti one a week or so before we played United. Celtic should have fought the Tonev case all the way unless they thought he was guilty and then he should have never played in the Hoops again.

We should have stood up to the SFA over Tonev.

We now have to either go all the way with this or forget the statement. I felt the statement was fine but could have been worded much better based on the fact that John Hughes seen the incident and admitted it was hand ball and the player himself admitted it. Everyone in the ground seen it bar the officials. I said it earlier and I will say it again. It was that blatant it was impossible for all the match officials not to see it.

I remember when Les Morttram didn’t give Dundee United a goal that hit a stantion and bounced back out and a Partick Thistle player picked the ball up and handed it to his goal keeper who kicked it up the park to centre the ball and Les waved play on. The incident with Tonev was worse than that because their was only proof only probability and Celtic should never have accepted that and used a lawyer to highlight other offences and punishments. I abhor racism but you must have proof. As for the handball usually a referee knows within seconds whether he has made a mistake due to player reactions. He must come out and admit his mistake. He must also never referee a Celtic match again. His brother played for our old rivals. He can never be considered impartial.

Another game where Celtic are penalised with honest mistakes. It’s enough to make you sick!

  19. .

Hooper’s comments could yet spark an investigation from the SFA, although whether they would have any appetite for another controversy so soon after ‘Tannadicegate’ remains to be seen.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell, meanwhile, met SFA counterpart Stewart Regan yesterday to demand an explanation of the Dougie McDonald affair, whilst also demanding reforms to a system which allowed a panel of ex-referees to let the official off with a mild rebuke.

The Parkhead club are understood to be seeking a new independent system of adjudication and greater levels of transparency.

With the SFA board meeting today to discuss Celtic’s concerns, the club will now await developments before issuing a public response.

Should the Hampden body attempt to sweep the matter under the carpet, however, then Sportsmail understands that Celtic will be scathing – placing Regan under pressure to tackle the SFA’s archaic committee system.

The ‘other’ internet is now in meltdown because Celtic have asked for explanation.

  22. BCW I did indeed. I think the board felt they had no choice. I am glad they asked but why don’t they want to tackle this themselves instead of waiting for the support.

  23. just read the Celtic statement and it is weak – we have tons more evidence than just the sunday incident. We should be demanding!! not asking!!

If you videoed the game have a look at Steven McLean’s reaction at half time to VVD querying the decision.

  26. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Scottish referees are poor, anyone who watches them knows that.

Yesterday apart, it amazes me how often their ineptitude affects the result of games (Beatons performance Kilmarnock v Aberdeen) and in many cases results in furores like theat witnessed in our draw at Tannadice.

They, as I understand it don’t face sanction in line with the havoc created.

Transparency would be a starting point.

  27. theglasgowcelticway on

Chris Sutton on Peter and Roughie’s show.” The officials must have seen it.”

“The worst decision he’s ever seen.”

“Celtic would have eon the treble.”

  28. McLean is regarded as the up and coming star of the current batch of referees, says it all really. In that split second yesterday he saw a Celtic treble and stopped it. There is no other explanation. Everyone saw it. They weren’t coming back from that, even if we had missed the penalty, as they need all hands to the pump at all times. Job done.

On the pitch: is there no-one on our bench capable of getting in the ear of the groundsman to stop the further watering at half time? Do we challenge anything? Changing boots…schoolboy stuff.

The SFA-don’t laugh at the back-should also be looking at McLean’s booking of the ‘wrong’ player. He seemed to me to be talked into and he knew what he was doing.

Come on Celtic, enough is enough!
