A case to answer for SFA and Celtic

1175

Referee Steven McLean saw the incident when Josh Meekings stopped a Leigh Griffiths header crossing the line with his hand.  He was 12 yards away with an unobstructed view.  The blame for getting the decision wrong is entirely his.

We can only speculate as to why he didn’t award a penalty.  At best, McLean didn’t believe the evidence of his own eyes and passed the buck to his assistant Alan Muir, who was around 6 yards from the action but with a less-clear view.

Muir did not see Meekings clear the ball legally.  If he was distracted, and failed to see what happened clearly enough, he should have informed the referee.  If Muir told the referee anything else, this is also a failing.

The SFA have a case to answer. Not fit and proper, to use their parlance.

Notwithstanding the fact that if the rules of the game were followed Celtic would be in the cup final right now, they are out because they failed to deal appropriately with the known qualities of Inverness.

Three goals were lost, all of which were defensive mistakes.  A break downfield which caught the defence cold, a cross from the right which was not properly contested with all defenders in position, and a failure to match a back post run (similar to a recent League Cup final goal conceded to Kilmarnock).  Fatigue may have contributed to the final goal but being down to 10 men was not a contributing factor for the first two.

The game should have been won in the first half but we opened the second period off-pace.

Another matter which should be on the agenda at Lennonxtown today is why didn’t we have the right studs on?

It should be someone’s job to make a decision after the team arrives at a ground on which studs to wear.  If the decision was made, the decision was wrong.  If this process was not followed, it should have been.  Either way there is also a case to answer internally.

  1. BCW I can see why you think that. But what I actually see is that most things that are bothering us have the same root cause. Not only do we deal with a corrupt and racist society but our own club see this as a way to exploit celtic supporters.

If I felt there was an inconsistency in what I am saying or that it just doesn’t add up I would say so. I have no issues with being proven wrong (in fact I would love to be proven wrong in some of this). What happenned yesterday was just a confirmatory waypoint on a long and awful story. While I may have expected silence from the board and they made a statement (so I was wrong) the nature of the statement reconfirms what I believe is going on.

The Celtic statement basically takes us to Dougie Dougie territory. Celtic are asking why the penalty was not given.

Be interesting if any inconsistencies come out of that as with Dougie Dougie. Brings back memories of referees taking the huff and going on strike and then dosseirs.

Celtic were castigated when CEO Alan McDonald questioned Hugh Dallas’s ‘body language’

    Plus ca change.

Son of Dallas is fast tracked into the cabal, SFA nominate Willie Collum he gets Monaco v Juve in the CL with the help of discredited Daddy Dallas?

It’s stomach turning for Celtic fans, it really is.

mike in toronto. We have many problems in front of us like you I dont think either full backs are good enough defenders and we are likely to lose our two central defenders. In the middle of the park Bitton is not 100% fit up front we are lacking an out and out striker K.Commons looks slow and wee Jamsie like big Lustig cant stay fit.So Ronny and JC have a big rebuilding job ahead of them we need to get rid of a lot of the dead wood to make way for new players.H.H.

Who was the referee recently on tv as a guest of Rangers directors?

Can you ever imagine a former referee appearing on tv in a Celtic tie next to Celtic directors?

I think the SFA are self destructing with Sevco pulling the pin. It all hinges on Sevco and what happens next but the Celtic support won’t allow Celtic to run on silent lines, indefinitely.

Sadly it may be years away yet, but Celtic will take notice if the season ticket base takes a hit again, and todays complaints are a start.

W aren’t going anywhere. Play where we are. Our budget is massive in comparison to other sides.

  13. How come Livingston v Hibs is live on Alba on Wednesday night when there’s CL games on?

  14. GlassTwoThirdsFull (18:43): “How can Griffiths obscure the view of the linesman behind the goal AND the linesman on the far side at the same time????????”

Apparently someone’s arm was obstructing the referee’s view of the ball.

Second half begins with the score at 2-0 to Celtic and ICT down to ten men = completely different outcome… Celtic needing to beat a lower division team in the Cup Final to achieve a once-in-32-years event, a Celtic treble.

The authorities will ensure that McLean’s reputation emerges from this farce whiter than white.

The statement is still wet on the press, and SMSM have rounded on Celtic, for complaining.

That’s precisely what fans said would happen, and the questioning of ‘incompetence’ suddenly shows the uniqueness of our club, (we know it’s not incompetence)

I doubt every other SPL club is confident that Scottish referees are competent.

They could be on strike again by the weekend.

Not a strong statement but better than nothing. Is the club surprised at the depth of feeling from the support on this? They shouldn’t be. It’s been building for a while now.

What does the club do when the SFA write back in a few weeks saying so sorry, honest mistake?

    Demand foreign refs?

    Withdraw from next years tournament?

Nothing, focus on the future, season ticket deadline has passed anyway?

Until such times as the ineluctable link between the Referee Associations in Scotland and Freemasonry is broken then we will continue to get days like these.

Picture if you will the look of horror and contempt on the faces of those a row or two back when Neil Lennon lifted the Scottish Cup just two years ago, Masons every last one of them. Denied him the opportunity of two trophies at Hampden, hated that they could not deny him a third

The faces may change, the look of horror at Celtic success will not.

It was a deliberate choice of the BBC to have Kenny Clark criticise Celtic. An impartial broadcaster would have had no one or one from either side. My immediate reaction to Clark was not that I would consider giving up my season ticket but that I would love it if MORE Celtic supporters took an active role in supporting our team. By all means boycott Scottish Cup games but massive support at Home games would send the message to the BBC and the Clarks and McLeans of this world that we shall not be moved.

have decided to write to Mr. Taylor …. will take some time to put my thoughts to paper (electronically), but will post it on here when I do, and any response I receive.

  25. My take on it:

Celtic suspect (or know) there has been shenanigans between Muir and McLean.

They are trying to pull out the inconsistencies (lies) a la “Dougie Dougie”.

Possibly Muir told the ref it was a pen, the ref ignored it, and Muir is thinking “Sod this, I’m, no taking the fall for you!”

If the SFA can just answer “honest mistake, guv” as always, I don’t think Celtic would have bothered to make the statement.

I think they know there are inconsistencies and they are putting the SFA on the spot (again).

  26. So, Celtic ask a wee question and STV inform us that it isn’t the first time mistakes have been made this season, including of course 1 benefitting us. No mention, again of course, that that mistake as raked over and over. BBC Scotland, of course, then have that upstanding member of the refereeing fraternity, Kenny Clark, on to rubbish our daring to ask such a question, indeed any question. Scotland at its worst.

Thank you. Hope you get an answer, although I doubt it.

So, the upshot seems to be that McLean would have given a penalty if he had seen the handball. Also that he was perfectly positioned to see it.

The missing link in the chain, then, is why, if he was perfectly positioned to see it, did he not see it……???
