A case to answer for SFA and Celtic

1175

Referee Steven McLean saw the incident when Josh Meekings stopped a Leigh Griffiths header crossing the line with his hand.  He was 12 yards away with an unobstructed view.  The blame for getting the decision wrong is entirely his.

We can only speculate as to why he didn’t award a penalty.  At best, McLean didn’t believe the evidence of his own eyes and passed the buck to his assistant Alan Muir, who was around 6 yards from the action but with a less-clear view.

Muir did not see Meekings clear the ball legally.  If he was distracted, and failed to see what happened clearly enough, he should have informed the referee.  If Muir told the referee anything else, this is also a failing.

The SFA have a case to answer. Not fit and proper, to use their parlance.

Notwithstanding the fact that if the rules of the game were followed Celtic would be in the cup final right now, they are out because they failed to deal appropriately with the known qualities of Inverness.

Three goals were lost, all of which were defensive mistakes.  A break downfield which caught the defence cold, a cross from the right which was not properly contested with all defenders in position, and a failure to match a back post run (similar to a recent League Cup final goal conceded to Kilmarnock).  Fatigue may have contributed to the final goal but being down to 10 men was not a contributing factor for the first two.

The game should have been won in the first half but we opened the second period off-pace.

Another matter which should be on the agenda at Lennonxtown today is why didn’t we have the right studs on?

It should be someone’s job to make a decision after the team arrives at a ground on which studs to wear.  If the decision was made, the decision was wrong.  If this process was not followed, it should have been.  Either way there is also a case to answer internally.

    Re our lacking drive

    Opponents now have us sussed.

They are adopting the same tactics we used against Barcelona; a back 4 sitiiting 20 yards out, and 4 midfielders sitting 2/3 yards in front. The big difference is we dont have a Messi, who can cut through the two defensive banks.

Our problems are compounded by the fact that we are not hitting the bye line, and when we do, our forwards are dwarfed by opposition.

If we lose poseession, we then find our 4 forward / attacking midfielders are too far up the pitch, and our full backs are similar .

The above isnt meant to castigate Ronny’s tactics, but imho , unless you have players of the Larsson / McStay etc calbre, then you need to vary your tactics every 3/4 months to ensure an element of surprise.

Did anyone catch Clark’s answer about the Draper non-booking?

Don’t tell me he wasn’t asked about it!

  4. On the subject of refs, I just read that Willie Collum is in charge of the champions league quarter final second leg between Monaco and Juventus. The mind boggles. There will almost certainly be a red card and/or penalty awarded in that fixture.

I’ve been watching Celtic for over 50 years, so have seen some astonishing bare faced mibbery in that time.

I’ve never been so angry as I am over this latest debacle. A day later and I am still raging, not just about losing the game (and the chance of a treble) but about the injustice.

The worst injustices whether social, sporting or whatever, are always inflicted by the empowered on the powerless. We must show those who think they have the right to do this sort of thing that we are not meek and powerless. To this end, I am glad the club have made some sort of statement no matter how mild, in order to get the ball rolling.

Celtic should employ a lip reader to determine exactly what Muir said.

Better still ask for a transcript of conversation.

I would be surprised if it is not recorded ( officially or otherwise)

I’ll put money on Celtic getting a penalty on Wednesday night as the refs try to show that they play fair (and if it’s a dubious call they will say that things even themselves out).

    —————

Probably when we are at least three up!

  9. Yes we were cheated yesterday the referee was either incompetent or a cheat.

Modern technology points out that he had a clear view of the hand ball and that the AAR on the bye line could see it too!

Either way both should be binned to a much lower standard of football for a prolonged length of time until they are fit for purpose at our level!

History shows us that it takes an exceptional CFC side to win a treble.

Yesterday the second half showed that this side is not there yet nor is our manager.

Ronnie has turned things around in the league and hopefully will go and wrap up the flag in a few games! However he made mistakes as did several of our players.

IMHO he should have started with Efe instead of Matthews who is not physically strong enough nor committed enough for a cup semi against a big strong side like ICT!

In my view he was reonsible for all three goals. At the first he was out muscled and then short with his pass back.

At the second he should have stopped the cross and at the third he should have blocked off Shinnie from getting in to the box.

RD made a mistake in allowing Liam Hederson to go on loan – as he would have been a valuable asset yesterday. He would have given us energy, legs and a bit of dig in mid- field where we were out numbered and out fought eventually by a team of journeymen.

No disrespect to Tonev but LH would have been much better option.

As others have pointed out we lack a plan B – mainly because we do not possess the types of players you would need to to a plan B – especially with Zig and Zag being unavailable.

Ronnie hopefully will address this in the close season by being allowed to buy a midfield enforcer and and forward capable of holding the ball up near our opponents’ penalty box.

The Lions only, only won two trebles and MON’s team only won one – so that shows how difficult it is to do. Yesterday proved yet again some of the obstacles we have to overcome to win a treble. Poor refereeing without doubt but also the nature of the game in Scotland.

Pure footballing talent alone won’t do it – we also need the mental and physical strength to overcome opponents who are only too happy to mix it with us. Yesterday we lost far too many 50:50s. No one ever bullied the Lions! The guy Watkins hit about every member of our back four without one of them returning the compliment. Cannot see John Clark or big Billy letting him with that – nor Craig nor Gemmell! Younger fans will remember that big Johann, Joos and Vega could all take care of themselves.

In midfield no-one messed with wee Bertie nor Bobby Murdoch nor Lenny nor Alan Thompson nor Paul Lambert

Up front the Lions had pace and bravery in abundance but also courage to go in where it hurt while being able to use their physique when it counted – Sutton and Larsson were never messed about either.

So yes we were cheated but we also let ourselves down in the second half where we started 1-0 – I might be wrong but I think the Lions and MON’s team would have come out and buried ICT in the second half. That we didn’t just shows that Ronnie and his team have a way to go yet!

Young and Co know fine well it was a blatant case of cheating so the best way of discussing the issue is by muddying the water. To express their true opinions would mean instant jotters.

Now if Paddy Murphy, brother of a former Celtic player had denied the Hun a clear penalty, the same msm would have him called out and bumped down to the juniors. It happened to Jim Callaghan in 69 for not sending off John Hughes v Oldco.

We’ve been up against it for over 100 years and it was always going to get cranked up in view of the establishment club’s death.

  11. Celtic have a very tough match on Wednesday night, physically I hope they are all ready to go, we cannot have any people feeling sorry for themselves, we have been cheated again, dont let this stop us winning the league

I agree … the 4231 that was looking so effective a few months ago seems less so now. Other teams seem to have figured out how to set up to defend against it, but this should mean that there are leaving space elsewhere … but, as you point out, we have not adapted to change/take advantage of those spaces ….

For me, in the SPFL at least, our biggest weapon is/should be our fitness and speed…. we need to play more quickly …. even if it means more turnovers … with our players, we should be punishing teams regularly, but, as you point out, we are struggling to break them down …

  19. not sure if the lip reading matters – doesn’t he need to raise his flag if he sees a foul/handball?

  20. A day later and nothing has happened or been said to change my mind that the ref cheated.

I am disappointed that some bloggers feel the need to deflect from the real issue by criticising our players and manager. If the cheating hadn’t occurred we would have been in the final. The media’s reactions to Celtic ‘s statement tells you all you need to know. They are deliberately muddying the waters and suggesting that the victim (Celtic) is the perpetrator. Its outrageous but not surprising.

I’m nae lip reader but having watched that over and over I think he’s saying “no hand” and repeating it.

  25. Clark said he was disappointed that Celtic had issued a statement.

He felt the matter should have been dealt with behind closed doors.

The match was played in front of a live audience, viewed live to a worldwide tv audience.

So why should the performance of the corrupt referees be dealt with behind closed doors?

    Or in secret Kenny?

    Aye, that’s better Kenny, secret.

Are you in any secret, err, societies Kenny?

What are you afraid of if it’s all made public Kenny?

    Give me a hint!!

  26. As usual SFA let bias and incompetency spoil their”showcase” games. If they are too stingy to allow goal line technology they could at least adopt the rugby convention of checking with the tv referee. Only takes a few seconds for their offical to check and explain to the referee, the decision is announced and game continues. (not that I’m a rugby fan). If the technology is there, they are already wired up, why not put it to good use? Maybe it would stop SFA from being a laughing stock. Bet the sponsors weren’t please at the outcome either.

  27. The inconsistency is what McLean told Leigh (“header” according to Muir) and what he told Scott. I saw him telling him his hands were by his side – not outstretched.

The fact that Clarke suggested on radio that he wouldn’t meet a manager when he needed to protect his colleagues (how very noble Mr Clarke) shows how corrupt the whole system is.

    Time for transparency?

Let’s look at again at the outcomes and actions of the working groups following “The Rangers Shame Game”.

One of the actions was the need for transparency following controversial refereeing decisions. That seems to have been lost in the hay field that is Hampden.

I wonder what happened to the other recommendations. Oh, yes; the offensive behaviour at football act. I wonder why that hasn’t been kicked into the same long grass.

McCurry has become a controversial figure in Scottish football, having been criticised on a number of occasions for his handling of matches. Perhaps most notable is a match between Rangers and Dundee United on 10 May 2008.[5] Dundee United lodged a complaint to the Scottish Football Association over the events. McCurry later publicly admitted that he had made several mistakes in the match.[6] The SFA rejected Levein’s accusations, filing charges against Levein and Dundee United.[7] These charges resulted in Levein being fined £5,000 by the SFA. Levein refused to apologise for anything he had previously said about McCurry’s handling of the match in question.[8]
