A case to answer for SFA and Celtic

1175

Referee Steven McLean saw the incident when Josh Meekings stopped a Leigh Griffiths header crossing the line with his hand.  He was 12 yards away with an unobstructed view.  The blame for getting the decision wrong is entirely his.

We can only speculate as to why he didn’t award a penalty.  At best, McLean didn’t believe the evidence of his own eyes and passed the buck to his assistant Alan Muir, who was around 6 yards from the action but with a less-clear view.

Muir did not see Meekings clear the ball legally.  If he was distracted, and failed to see what happened clearly enough, he should have informed the referee.  If Muir told the referee anything else, this is also a failing.

The SFA have a case to answer. Not fit and proper, to use their parlance.

Notwithstanding the fact that if the rules of the game were followed Celtic would be in the cup final right now, they are out because they failed to deal appropriately with the known qualities of Inverness.

Three goals were lost, all of which were defensive mistakes.  A break downfield which caught the defence cold, a cross from the right which was not properly contested with all defenders in position, and a failure to match a back post run (similar to a recent League Cup final goal conceded to Kilmarnock).  Fatigue may have contributed to the final goal but being down to 10 men was not a contributing factor for the first two.

The game should have been won in the first half but we opened the second period off-pace.

Another matter which should be on the agenda at Lennonxtown today is why didn’t we have the right studs on?

It should be someone’s job to make a decision after the team arrives at a ground on which studs to wear.  If the decision was made, the decision was wrong.  If this process was not followed, it should have been.  Either way there is also a case to answer internally.

  1. I think we need cover for Izzy and Shinnie would have been a good choice. Pity he is Aberdeen bound. Young Christie would be a good addition.

  2. We were on the South Stand lower yesterday by the corner flag so couldn’t really see what happened but you can always tell by the players reaction what went on.

The twitter GIF doing the rounds shows it perfectly, cheating pure and simple.

Nothing really new and maybe not even worse than Gollum having eyes in the back of his head at Celtic Park vs. the Huns.

Broonie at full time would, I am sure have gubbed the ref if he hadn’t been dragged away, big VVD got booked for applauding them and no doubt a few choice words as well.

We (Mrs RobinBhoy and myself) will be back in our usual seats next year, renewed before the semi final, no point in punishing Celtic and ourselves for the institutional bias that has existed in Scotland for as long as I can remember.

Wining Captains, really hope your advert will highlight this issue and all others to all Scottish football fans.

    Winning Captain ….

    Thanks for the update.

I trust that you know I have tremendous respect for what you did with the prior Statement, and that I have similar feelings for Morrissey and the others for what they have done/are doing with Resolution 12 …..so, I trust that you will know that you and others like you are in no way the object of my frustration …

I think I know the answer, but, to be fair to the Club, I should get the answer from the horse’s mouth ….. did you seek and/or receive any sort of support from Celtic PLC for your ad?

I understand that you may not be able to answer the question, and if that is the case, I will not pester you about it, but will simply thank you for your efforts, and let it go.

And what abt Ross try to convince Mc Lean to book him and save his team mate from missing the final??

Ps And what abt Mc Lean giving us the advantage at a foul then stopping play when Scott Brown got the ball in the clear??

  7. RWE – I enjoyed your post. Worked out the last 2 paras…. It’s similar to a lot of Celtic sympathisers here in Ireland. I call them sympathisers because they like celtic but don’t necessarily have the deep rooted thing for them that we do. In fact I wonder if they get sport beyond the cosmetic crap that’s served up via the EPL. They certainly don’t get the cultural thing with Celtic.

When thee amd me try to explain the ins and outs that we understand so well it can be hard to express too. There are so.many facets to being a Celtic person.

Conversely I would have to admit that I don’t always appreciate the love some people have for Gaelic games here. Maybe it’s what we grew up with that runs deepest.

He’s been expertly coached in refereeing Celtic games by Craig Thomson.

  9. If you are starting a campaign, the first thing you need to do is to clearly identify the objective you want to achieve. Are we looking for SFA to set up some kind of procedure to review bad decisions, are we looking for Celtic to issue Statements, are we looking for Celtic to withdraw from certain Competitions as a protest at what we perceive as an institutional bias against our Club.

Once objectives has been clearly identified, we need to establish a Central Committee that will command widespread backing from the vast majority of Celtic Supporters. We would then have to trust this Committee to come up with the right strategy and plan of campaign and then back the campaign to the hilt

I would support such a campaign providing that we are hitting the cheaters and not the cheated. Hit the SFA in the pocket, boycott Cup Sponsors, Cup Competitions, away games but don’t boycott Celtic.

Gary Ralston, a sports writer for the award winning Daily Record headlines his article with a spelling error that was fairly common when Celtic manager Deila was new. After almost a full football season one would think that a sports writer would know the correct spelling now. Its not Delia. And they call us bampots.

  12. I have said in the past that Celtic sit back for fear of reprisals on our fans or other person’s. I say now, let us worry about that, the club must do something it is now beyond a sportsman’s dinner joke…

  13. I’ve posted a couple of times since Friday asking if anyone would be interested in joining the Celtic Trust. Currently the joining fee is £10 but recently it was discussed that this could be lowered to as little as £1.

If you’d consider joining then please email me at hamiltontim@hotmail.co.uk

Making contact won’t bind you to anything at the moment but I’ll keep you posted on any changes to the joining fee and you can then make the decision for yourself.

In hindsight, the cheating started when we had to play Kilmarnock in midweek.

This is supported in that Caley also had two games outstanding before the split, with ni impediment to them also playing on Wednesday.

Hughes even commented, pre game, on the strangeness of this decision.

Yesterday has gone, we are out of the cup and, cheating apart, it also showed that the squad, minus the new boys, is running on empty.

Hopefully, their reintroduction to the team, along with the experience of Stokes, will drag us over the line.

I am not expecting many/any silky performances on the run in.

However, it is going to be extremely difficult, with every team gunning for us, so, maximum encouragement required , at the game and on the blogs.

    Corkcelt @16:10 ….

The problem I see is that you want to ‘hit’ those that are party to or support the corruption … but you dont want to boycott Celtic. I’m not sure that is possible …

At this point, there is ample (admittedly circumstantial) evidence to suggest that Celtic PLC (and/or those that operate it) are prepared to go along with the shenanigans, if not downright complicit in them ….

I’m not saying anyone else has to agree with my feelings… just expressing them, and others can do as they believe appropriate.

The following extract is from the article you referred to. Some familiar names here ……..

“After a penalty claim was ignored by referee Craig Thomson, when Jambos substitute Ryan Stevenson, on for Black, looked like he might have used an arm in the box, the raging Lennon was dismissed from the dugout after aggressively complaining to fourth official Steven McLean and linesman Graham Chambers.”

I said after the Dougiegate fiasco that the conversations that go on in their wee headsets should be taped, and them they would have hard evidence.

Having read most but not all the comments and reading one about video replays, I got thinking that is the way to go. And the club should be pushing for the video replays. Just might be a corrective measure to honest mistakes.
