A case to answer for SFA and Celtic

1175

Referee Steven McLean saw the incident when Josh Meekings stopped a Leigh Griffiths header crossing the line with his hand.  He was 12 yards away with an unobstructed view.  The blame for getting the decision wrong is entirely his.

We can only speculate as to why he didn’t award a penalty.  At best, McLean didn’t believe the evidence of his own eyes and passed the buck to his assistant Alan Muir, who was around 6 yards from the action but with a less-clear view.

Muir did not see Meekings clear the ball legally.  If he was distracted, and failed to see what happened clearly enough, he should have informed the referee.  If Muir told the referee anything else, this is also a failing.

The SFA have a case to answer. Not fit and proper, to use their parlance.

Notwithstanding the fact that if the rules of the game were followed Celtic would be in the cup final right now, they are out because they failed to deal appropriately with the known qualities of Inverness.

Three goals were lost, all of which were defensive mistakes.  A break downfield which caught the defence cold, a cross from the right which was not properly contested with all defenders in position, and a failure to match a back post run (similar to a recent League Cup final goal conceded to Kilmarnock).  Fatigue may have contributed to the final goal but being down to 10 men was not a contributing factor for the first two.

The game should have been won in the first half but we opened the second period off-pace.

Another matter which should be on the agenda at Lennonxtown today is why didn’t we have the right studs on?

It should be someone’s job to make a decision after the team arrives at a ground on which studs to wear.  If the decision was made, the decision was wrong.  If this process was not followed, it should have been.  Either way there is also a case to answer internally.

  1. By the way, the pitch was rubbish as usual. It’s a leveler used against us every time we play there.

Imagine what we would have done to Sevco if it was a good surface. I hate Hamden.

Glad I got that right, but so sad for your loss. I arrived on this site a tad late to really get to know your brother. But I know from speaking to those who knew him that I’d have hated the swine. Seems he was much better at organising a dayooooooot than I am!!!!!

So many speak well of him, bud. We should all have that.

Hail, hail. And a final wee glass before bedtime for your brother.

Yesterday’s game was all about a levelling the playing field.

A heavily watered pitch more suited to tractors than the twists and turns of our high speed game.

With agricultural tackles evading yellow cards and the flow of the game controlled by inconsistent and incorrect application of the advantage rule we were dragged down to their level.

At various times in the game I recall Forrest, Commons and Biton all trying running off heavy knocks.

Over the last few weeks it looks like Scottish Football has learned how to PLAY this Celtic team.

Is this what is meant by a level playing field?

I have no way of knowing what the officials did or did not see,…but I do Know what i saw ,,,i saw Rank bad defending that cost us three preventable goals…i saw us unable to see out the remaing 3 mins to take it to pens, and that bothers me with a title to win….

The goals we lost yesterday wouldnae have been a problem if the laws of the game had been applied in the first place.

I really do not get what you mean. Being honest is simply telling the truth. He did not hesitate or make an excuse why it was not given (like some would have.) He simply stated it was a penalty and his player should have been sent off.

Did he say that, as an incorrect decision which materially affected the outcome of the game occurred, his club would write to the SFA to offer Celtic a replay.

On studs, I recall, Brown, Griffiths and Gidetti all falling. I also recall the pitch being watered at half time in our defensive half only.

Guidetti, Griffiths and Brown all fell in the 2nd half beyond our midfield area. Griffiths fell crucially at one cross ball which would have landed on his baldy pate. Griffiths slips elsewhere Bly highlighted how isolated he was at times with two players on his back as he attempted to control and then couldn’t make up his mind whether to turn or hold it up. I rate Griffiths as a good striker of the ball but not a. leader of a 1 man up front team.

We also fail to concede tactical fouls. The first goal for Ict came from that driven corner with no player capable of defending our left at the desired pace we should have fouled and taken the booking. This might not be pretty but would not have cost is he game.

Other wee point, we pressed them in heir own half but then dropped off when they crossed the half way line to then try to win the ball back 10 yards in front of our box. I don’t know if that was deliberate but caused confusion particularly with Forrest who didn’t know were to stand when the ball was within 20 yards. Johansen ended up pressing two players and got picked off as s result. Kris Commons just us not a right sided player of the front 4!

gscbhoy-there is an instructional video from the SFA, detailing deliberate/accidental handball incidents, you’ll never guess what referee is presenting it?

Commons getting stick for the ICT penalty seems a bit odd. He hit a poor corner granted but the mistake in my view was leaving Matthew as last man in a one on one situation when he was clearly outpaced.

Leave someone quicker on the halfway line and there should be no problem.

“@gerrymcculloch1: So @StewartMRegan says officials “missed” the ‘handball’. If true, that actually makes them worse refs than ‘wrong interpretation”

    So, some questions

    1. How, from a couple of yards with unobstructed view?

    2. So what was guy behind the goal shouting into his microphone?

    3. All FIVE of them missed the handball?

    4. Will they be downgraded?

  17. I find the calls for SFA action/ bhoycotts etc. all a touch hysterical. Yesterday it was a penalty. No Doubt about it. It wasn’t the first time we didn’t get a valid penalty claim, nor will it be the last. And perhaps we are not paranoid enough…

Whether it was an honest mistake or a dishonest mistake…. the ref DEFINETELY got it wrong and It won’t just happen in domestic games, it will happen in Europe too.

However yesterday we were a goal up against a team with only a fraction of our resources and yet we still managed to concede three goals, probably we wouldn’t have conceded three if the team with a fraction of our resources also were reduced to 10 men too….

But surely when the claim was disallowed, we were still masters of our own destiny a goal up against a minnow team and perhaps we shouldn’t ignore the reasons why we couldn’t compete. The decision to send Craig off was correct.

Even at half time the possession stats say ICT had almost 60%

Now if this post is meant as a tough in cheek comment, then I get the joke. If not, well its silly suggestion. I am only saying that he admitted without trying to justify why the ref did not give, like a lot of the hunlike managers would have. If you listen to Clyde tonight you will probally hear some of the punters given reason why MacLean did not give.

The linesman on the right wing appeared to have a clear view. Did he not see it? Did he not say anything to the ref? Four Celtic players were screaming for handball – maybe a bit of a clue?

  22. oneofthe70percent on

Given that a woman,s game was replayed, partly after a ref,s mistake, then we should press for at least a replay or be awarded a 3-0 victory as per uefa rules, the ref missed loads yesterday, that twat christie must have died 7 times, the no 15 elbowed virgil in the face and the ref done nothing.,we were in total control until commons tried a crazy driven corner, and our tendency to have no one around the edge of the box gave them a free breakaway, this tactic or so called tactic has been going on for years,at corners both for us and against us ,the ball always falls to the opposition, when we were down to 10 men we defended too deep, and lost total control of the midfield ,and our subs were wrong tonev cannot have been match fit.and given we were humping high balls up field Scepovic may have been a better option, but in the end it all comes down to a corrupt SFA

WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN SICK IF WE WON THE TREBLE,WE SHOULD TELL THE BASTARDS WERE RESIGNING FROM THE SPFL AND LET THEM WITHER AWAY

  23. Easy way to clear up what they said ,get them to come out with it, though there is more chance of my mam winning the 100m at the next olympics than that,

The chances on McClean being stood down are roughly zero, zilch, nada, hee haw ,They still blame Celtic & Lenny for catching them out lying in Dougie dougie gate.

  24. TimJim

Off course I don’t expect him to call for a replay. It’s not his nor his team’s fault that the referee is incompetent and they do what everyone else does in play to the whistle.

But I also agree with others that it is very easy to come out and tell the truth when you are the winner (and when it’s as blatant as that). Anyone making excuses for ref is beyond help.

If the SFA are saying their refs are incompetent then now might be the right time to put the contract for next years cup competition out to tender.

I’m sure there are plenty of qualified referees south of the border and elsewhere who would love the opportunity to take part in such an historic cup completion.

  27. Commons corner was poor. Matthews tried to get something on it.

  29. Morning Paul and all hereabouts,

Posting from the land of Caroline after an eight hour flight from Heathrow to the city of Charlotte of Mecklenburg.

Mrs RWE & I forgot our green cards in all the kerfuffle in getting the trip organized, so we had an unusually complex 5 hour pre-amble to the flight at Heathrow, and on our arrival in the USA we had a three hour sin-bin wait for the paperwork clearance by Immigration.

We both got a finger wagging/grade B bollocking but just adopted the mea culpa posture.

After a broken sleep and an early morning walk in my new Celtic training top, I see the BBC’s latest sporting satire “Great for the Scottish game” article.

As Del would say to Rodney “They don’t get it Rodney.”

During my visit, I had a close family in-law try to convince me that “They” were needed back in the Scottish game. He had no answers to the conclusions of your “Barcabhoy” earnings article from last week. He had heard of Turnbull Hutton, but only of the “didn’t he die recently” vintage. He also had no answer when I said that “Them” coming back or not was a little interest to me, but a competitive league was only of value when it also had integrity. He also complained that Scottish football held no interest abroad without “Them”. He is a Partick Thistle fan who has spent years complaining that Celtic and a now deceased club dominated Scotland too much, and that all Celtic fans do is cry about decisions and the conspiracy of corruption in Scotland against them. He resented the “Ancienne Firme” when it was the only sellable face of Scottish Football – with all the usual epithets about sectarianist poison and cultural blight. Now he wants it back. (Huge sigh and head shake from me left him perplexed)

Celtic have it all to do, but it was always thus – and probably will always be.

Thank you to yourself, BMCUWP, Thebarcamole, for all the good that you do. Personally and generally.

Great to meet you again and to hug the other two (in a very manly fashion like, ye ken:)

As for the Wee Number 10 – words really do fail me in trying to convey how wonderful he has been and continues to be.

    HH

He is a very intelligent man in a well paid profession and whose sons all support Celtic, but he appears to live in a bubble of ignorance and celebrates that bubble existence by bombast that would shame a politician. Further, he doesn’t know he is ignorant of key things, doesn’t seem to have any awareness that he holds starkly contradictory positions on the same closely related issues, and will push a sound-bite response in answer to anything if you let him.

I have not spoke to him since yesterday, but he will claim that this is a great final for Scottish football and look away when integrity/competence of officials is mentioned.
