A case to answer for SFA and Celtic

1175

Referee Steven McLean saw the incident when Josh Meekings stopped a Leigh Griffiths header crossing the line with his hand.  He was 12 yards away with an unobstructed view.  The blame for getting the decision wrong is entirely his.

We can only speculate as to why he didn’t award a penalty.  At best, McLean didn’t believe the evidence of his own eyes and passed the buck to his assistant Alan Muir, who was around 6 yards from the action but with a less-clear view.

Muir did not see Meekings clear the ball legally.  If he was distracted, and failed to see what happened clearly enough, he should have informed the referee.  If Muir told the referee anything else, this is also a failing.

The SFA have a case to answer. Not fit and proper, to use their parlance.

Notwithstanding the fact that if the rules of the game were followed Celtic would be in the cup final right now, they are out because they failed to deal appropriately with the known qualities of Inverness.

Three goals were lost, all of which were defensive mistakes.  A break downfield which caught the defence cold, a cross from the right which was not properly contested with all defenders in position, and a failure to match a back post run (similar to a recent League Cup final goal conceded to Kilmarnock).  Fatigue may have contributed to the final goal but being down to 10 men was not a contributing factor for the first two.

The game should have been won in the first half but we opened the second period off-pace.

Another matter which should be on the agenda at Lennonxtown today is why didn’t we have the right studs on?

It should be someone’s job to make a decision after the team arrives at a ground on which studs to wear.  If the decision was made, the decision was wrong.  If this process was not followed, it should have been.  Either way there is also a case to answer internally.

  1. Just watching big yogi on sky sports news and he is very honest about the penalty and red card decision.

You are being touted on Jambos Kickback forum.

For anyone who believes all these issues are only being raised by Celtic fans this may be of some interest.

    ============

Thanks for that. Through TSFM supporters of other clubs were asked to disseminate the story because it is lack of wider awareness that stops it taking root and becoming a cause for action. I’m hoping it will feature in The Red Final which is an Aberdeen fanzine. The decision left a bad taste in the mouth of their representative.

Im offski to the sun for a while but have left a possible advert in capable hands of WC and TSFM which may or may not happen depending on SH.

Some sensible comments on the Jambo forum as well on why Celtic are not able to lead and one about Res12 being kicked into the long grass.

Well that might have been the perception but it wasn’t , however if I go with the analogy it went with a strimmer and the grass is being cut.

  3. Forrest was injured, that’s why he was sacrificed. He would more than likely have come off anyway. He was stretching and holding his hamstring just before Commons hit the corner (badly) that lead to the sending off.

    Yeah, that’s probably it.

    No cheating at all then.

Did they also show the video in which a player can be booked in place of another who would otherwise miss a cup final, the one in which a full back can kick a forward who is getting away from him without a booking as long as the forward has the initials JF, and the one in which a player can go unpenalised for persistent fouling if his name sounds like a character from a Dickens novel?

  7. If Ronny had taken Commons off he would have got a rollicking on here for leaving James Forrest on.

You can tell what kind of match Kris is going to have within the 1st fifteen minutes generally – he was having a stinker yesterday.

I think that Jamesey knew that he had the fullback on toast and that gave him the confidence to keep taking him on – he was having one of his more effective games

In hindsight Ronny made the wrong decision, he probably went with experience, but you can’t please everyone

  8. Really not interested in hearing criticism of Celtic players’ mistakes in this particular case. Whatever errors the players made, I’m quite certain that none of them deliberately fouled up.

McLean, on the other hand, cheated. He didn’t give Celtic a penalty because to do so would have finished off ICT.

The Celtic board should unequivocally state that the club finds McLean’s performance not only unacceptable but also highly suspect; either that or confirm that Celtic shall continue to lead with the chin and offer a free hit to anyone who fancies it. To remain silent on this refereeing performance is to accept that referees are entitled to carry on cheating Celtic and denying us what we’re due.

Talking tactics we blew it at 2-2. We should have just sat in and went for penalties. We were toiling. We had players going down injured and bar a set piece we weren;t scoring again. We should have cut our losses and sat back and went for penalties. We should not have kept flooding forward. There is a lack of decision makers and leaders on the pitch and I have said that for a couple of seasons now. Craig Gordon was a big loss both as a goalkeeper and a leader yesterday.

I have seen the video and let me tell you this bhoy !… That was nothing like yesterday’s incident.

I think the official word is the ref did not see a hand ball and the 5th official behind the goal said it had hits his face.

Show me one person who does not think that is a red card and pen,and I will show you an idiot or deid team supporter.

As far as the systemic cheating is concerned, I’m afraid we cannot change the present or the future either.

On a less pessimistic note,I do agree with the other points in your post about the weaknesses in our team and the deficiencies that need addressed.

  15. I Think all the officials at SFA think our club are a bunch of softies.what with them being good Samaritans with food banks etc.and other charitable organisations.which is out of kindness. But over the yrs kindness is something our club don’t get from certain football officials.but if we don’t have someone at our club speaking out about decisions which go against .then we will get trampled on again.and this Dermot Desmond were are you.has been the worse major shareholder to sit on the board at Celtic Football Club.how to be rid of him and a few others.but how.I think to do that our club need to have Celtic supporter’s with deep pockets., which at the moment I don’t see coming forward .are they out there and would they invest in our club

  16. Had a bad feeling about yesterday pre kick- off, as I was watching the Hun cheats perform my thoughts went back to the 1970 cup final when we were robbed by the sheep, I think Davidson of Airdre or Tait were on duty that day, haven’t seen big Jock so animated. Nothing’s changed.

  18. Big Yogi on SSN: Yes it was a penalty and yes the player should have been sent off. Wish there was more honest people like him in Scottish Football, allas that is not the case, far from it.

  19. A worse decision was when Commons got pulled back in box. Linesman had a perfect view. penalty and red card. Shocking.. bad sub, always leave runners on when down to 10.

  20. It feels like CQN ragers bullied this meaningless blog out of you Paul. Sorry to be so blunt, but no matter how it hurts us to admit, it was just a bad mistake made by a referee. Hardly note-worthy if you’ve been following the EPL this season.

It was a particularly bad performance from the ref, though, so I expect he’ll be dropped from top level stuff.

Meanwhile, I can’t even imagine a scenario in which the stud choice falls to anyone other than the player himself.

  21. I have no way of knowing what the officials did or did not see,…but I do Know what i saw ,,,i saw Rank bad defending that cost us three preventable goals…i saw us unable to see out the remaing 3 mins to take it to pens, and that bothers me with a title to win….

  22. Commons is a part of the wallpaper that covers the cracks in our team. He can score wonder goals that conceal the reality. Griffiths is another who does likewise.

Scott Brown has been superb this season as has Jonansen and Gordon. Izzy Denayer and VVD also been good along with Gordon. …

As for the rest. No thanks

  23. Liam Henderson would have been a certainty to come on yesterday,I never thought it was the right thing to loan him out at this important point in the season.Tonev has shown nothing in a Celtic jersey to suggest he would have had any influence on yesterdays game.Once again as was the same under Neil Lennon we have failed to match up against a team of free transfers and journeymen,it is alarming that we can be so easily dragged down to this level.Caught up on some posts from last week about Aiden McGeady coming back.Does anyone seriously believe he would buy into Ronnies philosophy of football.

Totally agree. We have went from a fast paced side in February to the more predictable early season form.

We do miss GMS and SA. Kris has not get the legs any longer and I wonder how he’ll fare in the second year of his contract. Johansen suffers most with his inclusion.
