A gentleman that’s going round Turning the joint upside down

1101

There’s a gentleman that’s going round
Turning the joint upside down
Stool Pigeon – ha-cha-cha-cha
He’s an old ex-con that’s been away
Now he’s back, no one’s safe

It’s quite likely that David Grier and Craig Whyte had many conversations they didn’t want replayed on BBC Reporting Scotland.  Their deal to acquire Rangers from Sir David Murray and Lloyds Banking Group would have required many scenarios to be considered, some of which would certainly be unpalatable.  So with this in mind, Grier may have been comfortable discussing strategy with Whyte when the latter recorded their conversation in May this year.  They had been in the proverbial trenches together before and at one time would have had a bond of trust.

What frankly beggars belief is that either party would consider this bond to be still in place a month after Duff and Phelps sued Craig Whyte’s company for £25m.  It’s even more surprising that Mr Grier and Mr Whyte were on such convivial terms – chatting liberally in a restaurant about such a serious matter – while they were supposed to be on opposite sides of a £25m legal action.

We now know that Rangers administration went miles off track soon after it started. Whyte, as we predicted back in October last year, hoped to present creditors and Scottish football with a fait accompli.  Duff and Phelps were to complete the task within days for a fixed fee of a fraction of what they eventually raised.

Instead Duff and Phelps fee increased by a factor of six, Whyte lost control of events and inherited a great deal of litigation, not to mention a police inquiry.  Duff and Phelps must now prepare to tell the truth to Lord Hodge next week.  There are millions of pounds at play here and anything short of the truth could land them in heaps of trouble.

Credit to Mark Daly and Reporting Scotland for landing the recording.  The BBC are taking a pounding this month but this was a stunning item for an evening news bulletin to present.

Craig Whyte, you will remember, threatened to sue Daly last year and managed to convince the hard of thinking that Daly, and the BBC, were victimising Rangers by dishing the dirt on Whyte.  Some still adhere to this belief, despite now realising their Messiah was just a naughty boy, it’s a cognitive dissonance thing.  Another lesson that football fans are fools for bombast.

After all the talk then they wired him
And he took a walk with his crooked friends
And they joked about the good old days
And he recorded it on a reel of tape
He caught the mug who did in the forgery
And the babe in charge of larceny

We have to wonder what liquidators BDO will make of Duff and Phelps actions when they take over next week.  Ha-cha-cha-cha.

  2. Gary Allan QC interview on AT’s blog. Dynamite.

He basically says McMoist is a liar or an idiot.

    Or both.

  3. In a professional career that dates back to 2007, former Oldconian John Fleck – AKA ‘Scotland’s Messi’ – has scored a total of 3 (three) goals.

  4. Will any of the laptop loyal ask Fat Sally for an explanation?

GA: “I was astonished when I saw a recording of Mr McCoist demanding that the names be disclosed and declaring he did not know who they were, and felt he ought to know and Rangers fans ought to know.”

AT: “Astonished because he was lying?”

GA: “I don’t know whether Mr McCoist was lying. That is, of course, a possibility, but I’m happy to consider other possibilities, that he was simply completely misinformed.”

“I’m also prepared to consider that he overlooked the opportunity to ask his director of football administration, who was at the tribunal. Because that gentleman sat across the table from me for five days; engaged in discussions with me for five days; introduced himself to me with a hand shake for five days. As did his solicitor. And as did the representative for Duff & Phelps (the Rangers administrators), who was in attendance each and every day for every session.

“Now, it may just be that Mr McCoist didn’t think about his first port of call to find out who the tribunal members were – he just didn’t think he could ask his director of football administration, or the club’s solicitor, or the representative of Duff & Phelps. Maybe he just doesn’t know how to go about doing these things.

“But I think there is room to think that Mr McCoist’s behaviour wasn’t through oversight, that there was an agenda he worked to. But if there were to be any suggestion that Rangers did not know who was sitting in judgement of them – that would be a completely misleading and groundless suggestion.”

His views are put more succinctly by the chairman of Raith Rovers, who suffered a variety of threats from Rangers “fans” this year, up to and including the alleged payment of two men to burn down the club stadium.

“Rangers actually knew who was on that panel, and Ally McCoist demanding to know who these people were actually inflamed a situation that didn’t need inflaming.”

The issue with Ally McCoist has now been dealt with by the Scottish Football Association, and Mr Allan merely wished to put his side of the story on the record.

Channel 4 News sought an interview with Rangers and Mr McCoist over the issue of threats. The club declined that invitation but issued a brief statement saying:

“..Rangers Football Club, like every other responsible club, does not condone any form of anti-social behaviour.”

Alex Thomson’s blog and the QC interview must prompt the First Minister or Justice Minister to make a statement and have the COPFS step in to have McCoist interviewed.

I think unfortunately big Victor has shown his intentions very clearly by turning down his new contract offer he doesnt want to stay at Parkhead but wants a move to the SPL.If it were me I would take the best price that is offerred for him in the January transfer window there is no point in keeping a player who doesnt want to be part of your future. We are fortunate that Kayal can replace him or big Efe we should ask for overs over 10 million and test the so called interest of the big clubs.H.H.

  14. The Rumble In The Jungle : Zippy Takes A Dive

Today is Oor Chris’s 45th birthday. He is quite a calm individual now that he is comfortably ensconced in middle age and his trips to Celtic Park are becoming increasingly rare since handing on the ever-burning torch to his progeny. However he has had his moments….

I recall one afternoon in particular in the mid-80s when we were playing Aberdeen at home and I was standing alongside the mutton munchers in the Sevco End with my dad and then-girlfriend. From our vantage point we could see what appeared to be sporadic disturbance in the north enclosure. During the second half a large hole appeared in the middle of the Jungle where obviously a couple of ghuys were doing their best Ali-Foreman impressions. The polis were quickly on the scene and order restored as the silver medallist was stretchered out The Jungle and ferried by the St Andrew’s ambulance guys around the ash track behind the goal at the Sevco End.

And there he was …. Oor Chris….. oan the stretcher… like something out a Wilfred Owen poem…. “with beauty, with majesty…we saw him !!”

It’s fairly unusual to see one of your siblings being stretchered around Celtic Park and something struck me about this tableau as being not quite right. He looked too wounded; like a Pieta without a grief-stricken maw. In any event his da was going to kill him anyway for bringing untold shame on the holy family.

To no-one’s surprise Chris was the first person we met on returning to the Irvine’s double-decker – Resurrexit Sicut Dixit indeed….his wounds ill-dressed and all around a pool of Buckfast. He seemed neither up nor doon. It had all been a cunning ruse. He had taken a dive in The Jungle and feigned serious injury nae concussion in order to avoid being arrested by Strathclyde’s finest. Don’t see the holes in his hauns, don’t see the gap in his side, dae see a hole in the north enclosure, dae see the gap in The Jungle. He truly lived to fight another day.

Happy Birthday, Chris – we will never be defeated while Irene has her sons !
