A league for the Celtic in his crowning year! Too la rue, too la ray!!

172

Celtic did not do enough to earn three points against Motherwell on Saturday. Kyogo’s turn and shot – off target, Rocco Vata’s cross onto the head of Oh – also off target, were as close as we came, but it was insufficient. Without Hatate and Jota, we are easier to defend against, without Abada, we have one less match-winner.

This far into the season, you and I are familiar with time-wasting antics; Motherwell excelled in this department. An injured player, mostly off the field, managed to cling to some on-field territory for an entire physio visit. Another rolled around in distress after bumping into the chest of Oh. Motherwell’s Kevin van Veen was already booked when he carried a second ball onto the field in a blatant attempt at time-wasting. Referee John Beaton looked the other way.

Fair play to Motherwell. If we are back in the Bernabeu on Champions League duty, I would expect Celtic to do the same. It is the referee who sets the parameters for time-wasting. The game will be disrupted until he shows sufficient resolve to caution players. Or he can just acquiesce and be party to a farce.

Celtic already have a Coronation Cup, so it’s appropriate for the club to win a Coronation League on the weekend of 6/7 May. It would be even better if Hibernian were the opposition, ‘ensure Parkhead is covered in shamrocks of green.’

Callum should Shoot a Lot Mair.

  4. A follow on , general interest – Internazionale 1967

    ——————-

The grand Internationali era under Herrara began with a Scudetto in season 62/63 scoring only 56 goals in 34 games.

In 63/64 they won the european cup beating Real Madrid 3-1 in Vienna

In 64/65 they won the league (68 goals better) the European cup again beating benfica in the san siro, and won the international champions of the world, so their greatest ever season.

in 65/66 they won the league again (70 goals) and were Intercontinetal champions of the world again …….

66/67 on reading up on it, maybe the end game really was in play of for them

celtic in contrast were seriel winners and the proverbial goal machine, going for the title, league cup back to back winners, still in the scottish cup and had been in two semi-final cup winners cups in 64 pre stein and 66 incerdibly cheated by officialdom and with the final at hampden an awe. attendnace records would have been broken.

the syles of the teams were evident, the contrast in leagues couldnt be more polarised, scotland (aye even thems) tried to score more than the opponent, feared no one, and did belive they were world beaters on their day.

    so to the run in.

Inter had been top of the league number 1 position , always points in fronts from round 1 till round 33.

Juve had been 2nd postion for all the season apart from 3 single weeks,

On 16th April Inter went 4 points clear at the top they won away, scoring a rare 3 goals, but lost 2, Juve lost at Bologna. Unbelievably, with 6 games to play, this would be their last league win of the season.

With 2 points for a win, they needed 4 more wins from 6, or 2 more wins and beat Juve in the fixture to come.

On the 19th Celtic drew 0-0 with Aberdeen at Celtic Park. the only league game we did not score, was there nerves with the semi final return at dukla prague ? wel lthey went and on the 25th drew 0-0 again, a game plan that jock vowed he would never ever do again, but now we are in the lisbon final.

celtic came back from prague on thursday, and into the scottish cup final with aberdeen, on the 29th,

in front of 126,102 , the bould bhoys win the cup. first time we have the league cup and scottish cup in the cabinet at this time of the season.

On to play the postponed United fixture on wednesday the 3rd may. One point wins the league.

We go 2-1 up, 44,000 (desmonds abacus ?) surely we are champions ……….. we lost 3-2.

2 more games to get the point, Rangers on the saturday. Connory in attendnace when he was still a celtic supporter, herrara there every inch looking like a bond villain.

something familiar about the team –

    Celtic

Simpson, Craig, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Clark, Johnstone, Wallace, Chalmers, Auld, Lennox. Substitute: O’Neill

    Scorer: Johnstone 2 (42, 74)

    Referee: WM Syme, Glasgow

    Attendance: 78,000

this was the 6th may, 19 days till the lisbon final, celtic had one more fixture to close the domestic season, killie at home, on the 15th, 2-0 victory, we finish the season with 111 league goals, and a parade of the trophies around the park.

champions , cup holders, league cup holders, 2 more charit trophies, already our greatest.

inter wanted to do the same at home …………. i like this ……………

Helenio Herrera, the Inter Milan coach had hurriedly flown to Glasgow to watch the game and spy on Celtic before the European Cup Final.Jock Stein accompanied him on the return journey in order to watch Inter Milan play Juventus on the Sunday.

  5. meanwhile over in italy –

    ——————-

    so to the run in.

But they became a team that stopped winning, and the defensive mindset and method pf playing overtook all else, it also became a thing that they did go ahead first, but the opposition would score anyway. or not score at all, or sometimes come from behing and hold out for a draw.

    16 April Inter 0-0 Lazio – 3 point ahead.

19 April 1967 Inter 1-1 CSKA Sofia Milan

26 April 1967 CSKA Sofia 1-1 Inter Sofia

30 April Cagliari 1-1 Inter – incredibly Juve lost at milan and their rivals have gift wrapped the opportunity for them, and Inter went 4 ahead with 4 to play, win at juve the league is surely theirs, dont lose and they are still 4 ahead with 3 to play.

3 May 1967 Inter 1-0 CSKA Sofia Bologna high pressure game, why was it bologna btw, and did this affect league form ? all too much,

7 May 1 Juventus 1-0 Inter – Stein witnesses did he know that day, this is how we will beat them, ?

Back to a two point lead, 3 to play.

14 May Inter 1-1 Napoli – Inter had to come from behind. still a two point gap.

21 May Inter 1-1 Fiorentina – Inter had to come from behin, win and they would have won the league, 4 days before lisbon, they have to go there knowing the scuddetto is not secure, Juve win, it is back to a point ahead fro Inter, all that worry coming to lisbon.

and stein told everyone that would listen – we will attack, we will attack, and then we will attack some more. 42 shots for celtic, inter had 5.

I am convinced, Stein knew how to beat them, had the players to do so, and the italians didnt know what to do, to the point that that defender is telling the goalkeeper to surrender.

they might have been beat in the tunnel when bertie started singing.

  6. Inter came to Lisbon as favourites,

Their form versus Celtic form would say different

Celtic were 2 in a row champions, had their first domestic treble, were record goalscorers, and the scottish league had produced European competition finalists and regular semi-finalists, it was not really a poorer league than Italy.

Inter came as league strugglers, sure they had beaten real in the quarters, but maybe like our leeds game, that doesnt win you the final also.

  7. Internazionale after Lisbon.

Inter went home vanquished, and absolutely slaughtered in the press.

Juve played Lazio on the 28th May and won 2-1 to go 1 point ahead in the scudetto, top of the league.

all Inter had to do was beat the little brasil team Mantova on the 1st June in Lombary,

    They lost 1-0.

In a change of style Inter had to attack, had to score, had to win, but were faced with a young goalkeepr called DINO ZOFF who had an eye catching, well ball catching and deflecting performance that had people talking about him all over italy.

Inter go on to their last chance, the COPPA ITALIA.

Thie qf tie had been posptoned due to the replay with Sofia, in a rare occasion for the months of may and June they beat Fiorentina 1-0 on the 4th June.

They lost the semi to Padova on the 7th. 3-2.

Defensive football – it never wins long term does it really.

In another irony AC Milan won the cup fro the first time that season.

Internazionale had changed their name to Internazionale Milano, it was seen as a petty thing but an insult all the same.

In another supreme irony the manager of Juve was also called Herrera, and scored only 48 goals in 34 gasmes to win the title.

    the end.

    bed time.

  8. Finally,

I think Gian Franco at 13 felt the same way about his Inter in 67 as i do about my 2003 seville team.

    we won feck all.

i wont go back to sville for an aniiversay sorest bloody day of my celtic supporting life. then amplified by losing the lague by a goal.

  9. Good morning all from a still happy clappy Garngad.

Still no fixture? That pesky super computer eh!

Do we go with Joe for 2023-2024?”

It’s a tough one. Ange will be aware that teams that go far in the CL normally have keepers who at the peak of their career and fitness. We were blessed to have Boruc and Forster at their peak.

  11. Saint Stivs

Thanks for all the stories of the famous 1966-67 season. I think there’s a book there for both team’s perspective. I doubt there ever has been one written about the season of the finalists, winners and losers, Celtic’s ascendency and Inter’s descent.

You got any free time to write it with Gian Franco?

  12. As an aside.

Accusations of match fixing regarding juve and inter were hinted at even back then.

If they were doing it they were not very good at it.

Unless inter players got paid to throw matches.

As an aside to that gian Franco passed on aged 68 in January. That was what had me thinking of what he had said

  13. BRRB

I just found out on BBC News why you were in Blackpool, reporter John McGuire was cleaning windows on the tower !! 😂

  14. I do believe we need to bear what’s in front of us but while waiting in that pesky computer sorting the fixtures out just imagine this league was a lot closer, even though it’s not always the sane teams that make the top 6 (well done St Mirren) but if this league was tighter that pesky computer had the choice of Ibrox, Tynecastle, Pittodrie & Easter Road for our last 3 away games …

I for one don’t think the computer is against us, but whoever programmed it certainly made sure we faced the top teams in the league at home twice, which could favour us to begin with …. But at the start of this season am sure the programmer was covering a few bases ….

    Never paranoid enough :-)

Just glad Ange and the bhoys took it out of the equation

  15. Tom McLaughlin on

    DENIABHOY

So what if Celtic don’t win at Tynecastle? We go to Ibrox needing a draw for the title.

Can’t see them taking that risk.

  16. “DENIABHOY on 25TH APRIL 2023 9:32 AM

The Sun claiming our first two fixtures will be Hearts away followed by Ibrox.”

If those two teams were in the bottom six, The Sun would still be claiming them as our first two games :-))

  17. 2.15 v Hearts, Coronation Sunday,…….then a Guard of Honour at Poundland the week after 👍
