A league for the Celtic in his crowning year! Too la rue, too la ray!!

Celtic did not do enough to earn three points against Motherwell on Saturday. Kyogo’s turn and shot – off target, Rocco Vata’s cross onto the head of Oh – also off target, were as close as we came, but it was insufficient. Without Hatate and Jota, we are easier to defend against, without Abada, we have one less match-winner.

This far into the season, you and I are familiar with time-wasting antics; Motherwell excelled in this department. An injured player, mostly off the field, managed to cling to some on-field territory for an entire physio visit. Another rolled around in distress after bumping into the chest of Oh. Motherwell’s Kevin van Veen was already booked when he carried a second ball onto the field in a blatant attempt at time-wasting. Referee John Beaton looked the other way.

Fair play to Motherwell. If we are back in the Bernabeu on Champions League duty, I would expect Celtic to do the same. It is the referee who sets the parameters for time-wasting. The game will be disrupted until he shows sufficient resolve to caution players. Or he can just acquiesce and be party to a farce.

Celtic already have a Coronation Cup, so it’s appropriate for the club to win a Coronation League on the weekend of 6/7 May. It would be even better if Hibernian were the opposition, ‘ensure Parkhead is covered in shamrocks of green.’

Turnbull divides opinion, but I think McGregor and Iwata are very similar the way they play, and I think Iwata will be an automatic choice soon,IMO Turnbull is the closest type to Hatate that we have, and can get the ball to the forwards quicker.

    1955–1961: Pioneers

Hibernian played their first European match on 14 September 1955, against Rot-Weiss Essen at the Georg-Melches-Stadion. The clubs played a friendly in July 2005 to mark the 50th anniversary of their entry into European competition.[1]

The first officially sanctioned European club tournament, the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, was launched in 1955.[2][3][4] Conceived by Gabriel Hanot, the editor of L’Équipe, as a competition for winners of the European national football leagues, it is considered the most prestigious European football competition.[5][6] Hibernian had only finished fifth in the 1954–55 Scottish league, but were one of the 16 sides invited to take part in the tournament’s first season.[2][3][4] As there was no English representative in the first competition, Hibernian also became the first British club to participate in European club competition.[2][3][4] In their first tie, Hibernian defeated Rot-Weiss Essen (West Germany) thanks to a comfortable win in the away leg.[2] Swedish club Djurgardens were their next opponents, but they were unable to play the home match in Stockholm due to adverse winter weather.[2] Both legs were played in Scotland, with the Djurgardens “home” venue being Firhill.[2] Hibernian won 3–1 in Glasgow and 1–0 at Easter Road to progress to the semi-finals.[2] At that stage they were drawn with French club Reims, who won 3–0 on aggregate to progress to the final (which Reims lost 4–3 to Real Madrid).[2]

The Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which is treated as an unofficial European competition as it was not operated by UEFA, was also established in 1955.[7] Hibernian became the first Scottish club to participate in that competition, in 1960.[7] After a walkover victory against Swiss club Lausanne,[8] Hibernian faced Spanish giants Barcelona in the quarter-final.[8][9] The first leg in the Camp Nou ended in a 4–4 draw, after Hibernian had twice led by two goals.[8] In the return leg at Easter Road, a late penalty kick by Bobby Kinloch gave Hibernian a 3–2 win on the night and a 7–6 victory on aggregate.[8][9] In the semi-final, Hibernian faced Italian side Roma.[7] They drew 2–2 at Easter Road and 3–3 in Rome, but the away goals rule did not apply at that time and a playoff match was required.[7] The playoff was also played in Rome, which Roma won 6–0 as they went on to win the tournament.[7][9]

*during their European run one if their games was televised live and you could hear their fans sing “for its a grand old team” ending with “and the Dundee champions will be there”

  7. I have done the Gallowgate pub crawl soooo many times.

But as they say, every day is a schoolday

On the way back after the game , we came out the Drover heading to the next watering hole and I noticed a plaque on the pavement.

It was a memorial to firefighters who lost their lives at Graham Square Gallowgate on Christmas Eve in 1927.

I literally must have walked over it hundreds of times without noticing it..

In everyday life , how many time do we walk by without seeing ?

  11. Aipple the mention of Gordon Biersch brings back many memories. I used to spend a lot of time in California for work, the GB in Palo Alto was one of my favourite haunts.

Way too much money and time spent there particularly on Friday evenings.

  14. Some great historic perspective on here tonight.

Interesting to hear how much inter were ‘on the slide’ when we got them.

I am still angered that we were close to our peak in 70-72 and didn’t win it because the Dutch revolution was also at a higher peak at the time.

I did always have a sense that we got a few breaks in 67 which we didn’t get in that later period though. Last minute v the slavs and injuries in the Czech team and then a fading inter.

The 66 team got no breaks in their CAC semi v Liverpool.

The 70 team beat champs of Swiss Portugal Italy and England yet didn’t win it. The 72 team hammered inter in the semi and deserved a crack at Ajax in the final but sadly lost in the lottery of penalties.

In the round our euro performances / fortune and misfortune balanced out.

Incredible though that the rangers franchises have reached 5 euro finals but have yet to actually see their team lift a trophy after 90 minutes in one of them.

Thanks for the first hand recollection of the Inter supporter and from the Inter player, I have never heard those insights before. I suppose all we think about is we won in May 1967, not really about Inter other than being seasoned European champions and campaigners.

    Hail, hail!
