A national proxy for Celtic

155

The Scotland national team is a decent proxy for Celtic on the international stage.  If anything, they are more limited in resources, unable to innovate in different markets, as we are.  In previous generations, when domestic leagues across the Continent were semi-professional, Scotland’s 5 million population and fully professional league was a sufficient bedrock.  Not anymore.

Scotland are entitled to enjoy this moment in the sun.  They will qualify for the Euros and in Steve Clarke have a manager who will ensure cheap defeats are rare.  It will only be a moment, though.  This is unsustainable, Scotland will regress just as Wales did and Ireland before that.

Celtic’s ability to innovate will bring them to the top table regularly, but the demographics are against everyone from a small country, club, or national team.  This reality is a hard enough burden to carry for the club we love, so best wishes to Scotland, but I can’t get up for it.

Terrorism is just violence you don’t like.”

Apart from the word `you` I strong;y agree with your comment.

  2. The last time I was in Donegal I never witnessed a rougher occasion outside a chip show resulting in >500,000 deaths as is happening in Ukraine/ Russia.

    Not quite a valid comparison.

  3. Big Wavy,

Evidence of how others perceive Celtic supporters.

Telegram. 550 million active viewers per month.

The perception of Celtic supporters is all over them. Forget the MSM who you would expect to jump all over us.

Yep. Fully aware of social media platforms. Paragons of virtue that they are.

GB support for the Palestinians at the time of the fine, drew enomrous goodwill across the ME and those sympathetic, up to and including Pink Floyd. I suspect lines will be similarly drawn.

If you are met with the impression that the GB supported slaughter, I see nothing to verify that. Use your platform of choice to tackle perceptions.

If you are met with accusations that the club are political, then send them the club statement. Tackle lazy and poor perceptions.

Once again, what are you proposing ?

  5. or…..Set up a page to promote a ‘Celtic friends of Israel’ day as a counter protest to the GB?

    Open invitation.

That would certainly help impression management that the support has different views.

  7. Big Wavy,

What I would propose is a revised statement along the lines of the St Pauli fans group which was posted on here last night.

However all the talking in the world is not going to help the poor innocents of Gaza. I sometimes wonder if there are any sane people left in positions of power.

Cheers. I’ll have a nosy. Haven’t seen that.

I may give the GB a benefit of the doubt Saturday (and could be wrong) but their subsequent statement could have been more conciliatory given what they knew at the time they wrote it.

I often think of those staunch eijits who said, on the telly, they’d never be back, when he was signed.

    Bet they did.

Bet they also walked away too when their club died.

“Do you have any evidence to suggest there is any truth to the GB celebrating Hamas atrocities?”

The big problem with this is that the GB had the perfect opportunity with their statement to clarify this. Unfortunately, the GB for whatever reason chose not to do so.

    —-

Agree. They seemed more interested in some moral high ground on free speech and missed the bloody chance to put that to bed.

But, we have a clear statement from the club.

As this atrocity moves back to the normal service of Israeli domination of the atrocious body count, the interesting thing will be if this is a turning point in relation to the waving of the palestinian flag by the GB, the existence of the GB at the stadium at all or the Tories making it illegal, holding that awful day in October, perpetuated by Hamas, as its logic.

As with the fines and the Madrid match coming up, this one will run and run for a while.

  15. About twenty years ago a celebrated sports journalist wrote about a season with Britain’s worst football team East Stirlingshire. ‘Pointless’ by Jeff Connor is that story, and 2004-2005 was that season. Well worth a read, for the anecdotes alone. (And still out there for a few quid) Apopros, given that at the end of week or en route to the next away game the manager would go round the bus and pay the players in cash. A fiver in pound coins.

Professional football. Funny thing is, and I hope Tontine Tim will be around later, is that just a few decades before that book was written, that was the reality for some of the best players in Scotland. Not sure if professional football gave those players any real advantage over their European counterparts during that era. I read once, and I tend to believe it, that when Jock Stein was manager at Dunfermline, one of the best teams around as we all know, he gave the players their jotters at the end of the season, so they could sign on and claim the dole during the summer.

That, was professional football in Scotland.

  16. For a war machine that has very cleverly conflated anti-israel sentiment with anti-semitism, there must be a concern for equating the Palestinian flag with Hamas terrorism.

    Watch that space.

I disagree. `reality` is reality no matter what anyone `thinks`.

`perception` is what you see after you have been `told ` what to see.

  22. On the football front, two Celtic players in the squad, Callum and Greg, cannot see Greg starting as part of a back three in the way Kieran did for Scotland. Seville, same stadium I think, where we played Porto, twenty years back, looks like it will be pretty hot in Seville, but it will not be as hot as back in May 2003. Then again it is October. Think the bookies are giving 11-1 on Scotland, and given that Spain have not lost a Euro qualifier at home in er twenty seven games probably about right. Not sure we have the nous up front to cause Spain problems, but did score against them not so long ago, so you never know. We have not qualified yet, will be very surprised if we did tonight, if we do we will be the first team to qualify for Germany 2024. That can’t be right can it?
