A remarkable appointment at the peak of our reach

681

In 2014 Brendan Rodgers was within touching distance of immortality on Merseyside, but Manchester City were on Liverpool’s tail throughout the campaign and snatched the title by two points.

The locals were distraught but loved the incredibly attacking formations Rodgers deployed. Liverpool were back, or so it seemed. Within 17 months, Jurgen Klopp made his availability known to Liverpool and in October last year Brendan was out of a job.

Celtic wanted Rodgers from the off but their major concern from the start was the familiar lure of English and Welsh lucre. Average managers there can command between £3m and £5m a year, getting on for 10% of Celtic’s income – and we pay tax and employer’s National Insurance, remember!

In recent weeks it became clear that Brendan is a Celtic man and was very interested in the job, while an offer he couldn’t refuse from England or Wales didn’t materialise. What went wrong for Brendan in Liverpool, after coming so close to the title, opened the door for Celtic.

The Merseyside team dropped from second to sixth last season, still higher than they were when he picked them up, but the slip worried the club to the extent that they could not resist Klopp’s availability. There’s reason to believe Liverpool were a tad hasty.

Much of Rodger’s success at Liverpool was based on getting the very best out of Suarez and Sturridge. They electrified English football in a manner which just didn’t happen before Brendan arrived, but Suarez fled for Barcelona as soon as he returned from his infamous World Cup, while Sturridge missed most of the following season through injury.

Suarez will be the first to break the Messi-Ronaldo Ballon d’Or duopoly. He is one of the world’s truly great players.  Remember our own experiences when losing world class players.

We went from double winners to fifth (and sacked Jock Stein) when Dalglish left, and from 26 consecutive league wins to second when Larsson went. Losing one of the best players in the world takes time to recover from. What made Liverpool championship contenders just wasn’t there anymore. This cost Brendan his job, and a little of his reputation.

Before last night’s Europa League final the inane commentators told us, when discussing Klopp, that good managers can always improve players. This wasn’t meant to be a slight on Rodgers, but neither was it a deserved accolade for Klopp. Liverpool finished the season 8th in the league, lower than at any of Rodgers’ finishes.

Good managers can improve players, but only if they are taking over from less-effective managers. Klopp is one of the very best in the business, but Brendan Rodgers bettered him with the same team. He’s a manager at the absolute peak of our reach, it will be a remarkable appointment.

Usual caveats apply, until the lawyers have triplicate copies signed……

Had a truly abysmal early evening. Fields got seriously messed with. First was what technical services said was a Denial of Service attack (which I vaguely remember happened here and to Phil) and then something even worse; someone got into the system files, deleted tonight’s article … and really screwed with the internal workings of the site. Was a major hassle to get it fixed.

Been on, been off, been on, been off. The article, I still had the text for so getting it back online was easy enough but whatever they did, they did it well cause it’s still running like a fat guy trying to push a boulder up a hill. But it’s online again, and the article is back up and the techies have fitted some kind of security which will keep the hacker at bay … I hope.

Really cheesed off, but this is what it’s all about I guess.

So, Rodgers over the weekend is it ? :)

“The Guardian ad will bring the Celtic fan led reform campaigns to the attention of an English based audience and seek to spark interest in the cause in the wider media.

    From James Forrest’s hacked blog.

My question is, what do you mean by “Celtic fan led reform campaigns”,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,?

  9. I mean campaigns not to reform Scottish football.

This doesn’t end with Resolution 12 sorted. There’s work beyond that. There’s seeing that the SFA impliments financial fair play. There’s making sure fit and proper person rules is worthy of the name. There’s assuring that there’s a proper procedure in place for the next club to “newco” (the SFA has set a deadly precedent with this “continuation of history” bollocks) and on and on.

The simple fact is, other clubs fans are not pulling their weight. I hate to say it but it’s true. Motherwell suffered as a direction consequence of the Res12 issue … where are their supporters in demanding justice and a tightening of the regulations to make sure it never happens again?

We’re on our own here. If we don’t do it, no-one will.

I don’t like that it’s all getting left to Celtic fans, but until someone else steps up it is.

  10. Campaigns NOT to reform Scottish football?

They certainly haven’t set a legal precedent with their ‘same club’ lie.

So it’s wide open to challenge, especially if the business of our club is affected by any of Sevco’s ‘Scotland’s Most Successful Club” shite, backed by the SFA/SPFL.

  23. SydneyTim says sack Lawell now on

From a massive position of strength in 2012 , Peter Lawell as CEO of Celtic football club has overseen and made decisions culminating in the Hampden embarrassment

2012 we took in nearly 20m in transfer sales plus CL money and zero debt. What an opportunity for our club to give a team to the fans that was worthy of wearing the hoops

Imagine if we had pushed the boat out from a position of strength and appointed a top boss and use the funds that were there

Instead we went out and bought puuki etc cheap rubbish We kept most of the cash in the bank and used it to make up for failure

Fast forward to 2016. We will go into debt to get back the higher income and success that is required

All the tosh of the last 4 years of projects and spin have been proved wrong , where a man called Peter Lawell pushed our club down with his policy’s and had the cheek last week to say in a few rags last week that the way of the last four years was the only way and now has been proved wrong , a man in his own ego

One way to help pay for any new top boss is to bring in a CEO for about 400k a year and get rid of this 1m a year leech

  24. From the Scotsman

Rangers boss Mark Warburton admits he is still waiting for Championship thug Joey Barton to make up his mind on a move to Ibrox.

The free agent was pictured being shown round the Glasgow giants’ crumbling stadium and Murray Bankrupt Park training base last Saturday.

The 33-year-old – named Sky Bet Championship winners Burnley’s player of the year – has been offered a lucrative 12-month contract extension by Clarets boss Sean Dyche but is also mulling over Warburton’s proposal of a longer-term EBT deal with Gers MkII
