A very personal Celtic

629

After I mentioned the Overseas Season Ticket holders last week, Auldheid (an overseas supporter) pulled some thoughts together on what his relationship with our club is all about.  Here it is, well worth kicking back for five minutes and reading:

“The phrase “BeCeltic” intrigued me somewhat as we all have different ideas of what that might mean. For me there is something about being a Celtic supporter that goes way beyond football. Every Celtic supporter everywhere feels it to some degree or other and every Celtic supporter demonstrates it to some degree or other according to their circumstances and their life experience.

You meet a stranger in a pub and if he is a fellow Tim he is no longer a stranger. If he is a fellow CQNer he was already your pal even though you had never met before. This feeling of belonging to something greater than self… it ranges from a distant almost spiritual connection to the club and what it stands for, to attendance with fellow supporters at every game the team plays, home and away.

I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to BeCeltic (as I saw it) last season when I signed up for an Overseas Season Ticket.  You can read more about the genesis (and CQN’s part in it) here on Celtic Underground.

The concept on which the OST is based for me anyway reflects the Celtic ethos which manifests itself in the way we support not only the team but each other both in the official charitable work carried out by the Celtic Foundation and as everyday supporters doing mad stuff like a huddle on top of Ben Nevis for heavens sake!!! In support of our own deserving causes, like the Kano Foundation, which is but just one great example of the caring heart of the support.

The impact such work can have on people’s lives can never be fully appreciated until you meet someone, as I did whilst sitting outside a pub in Spain,  overwhelmed by the difference it made to their wellbeing.

Buying an Overseas Season Ticket was almost an act of faith in that I did not know if I had internet connectivity at my Spanish destination to watch Celtic TV. Initially I did not, but “God works” etc and a charitable neighbour gave me WiFi access that enabled me to watch ALL games home and away on TV, via connecting HDMI cable to the laptop, from the comfort of my flat overlooking the beach. (Hence the term life is a beach).

Even better, I had the option of watching games not televised by Sky or ESPN in local bars via WiFi on my mobile phone if the wife dragged me out for lunch in game time. (Bad stuff happens to good guys too you know).

Not all performances were great but both 4-3 victories over Aberdeen and Dundee Utd in the Scottish Cup were truly memorable. Luckily I returned home in time to attend the title winning game v ICT using one of my 4 OST match day tickets, which this season has become FIVE along with a £50 price reduction.

I was also very pleased to get a letter from the Celtic Foundation saying that my seat had been used in my absence by local organisations and as a Calton man I was delighted to see folk from organisations in my old stomping ground amongst the beneficiaries.

Personally I see last season’s OST initiative as simply another indication, along with the recent appointment of a Supporter Liaison and Service Officer, that progress is being made in an ongoing process of bringing the Celtic support even closer together using the wonderful communication tools we now have. I find that something to be excited about as a force for spreading good in a world where ethics (which is derived from ethos) seem to have been forgotten.

But lofty thoughts apart J : At  a very practical level the OST is a very good value for money way, especially at £250 for a Season Ticket with the ability to view all games on Celtic TV and attend up to five games when at home, given due notice, of not only being a Celtic supporter but of sharing the load of supporting Celtic across the full spectrum of the support wherever we are. From the Auldheids with grey or no hair to the younger gentlemen with too much and the Celtic ladies of all ages whom I find are even more passionate in their support (if you met my sister you would know what I mean).

So I have already renewed and if you are fortunate enough to be able to afford as well as able to make full or partial use of an OST, I would encourage you to do so via BeCeltic overseas season ticket.”

With fans like Auldheid, we’re in good hands. Trying hard to insist I’m not worried about preseason games……

Just getting ready to head up to Hospital to see the both of them in a short while. I was about to head off to the Munster Final in Limerick but unfortunately these tickets will be unused and I’ll have to settle for watching it on telly. Don’t like missing the live game but it couldn’t be for a better reason.

  7. lennon's passion on

Don’t believe Neil is letting the 2 young bhoys out on loan. If true we must be looking to bring at least 6 players can’t see that happening.

Maybe the 2 going out on loan would be good for them and Celtic. Tony is one lazy laddie, bad trainer and never puts a shift in on the park. Maybe a wee short sharp shock is what he needs. Before his career is playing lower league football.

Dylan is diffrent put the blame at Neils door on this one. This laddie has great talent(mind his first goal). Played out of postion,10 minutes here and there.Maybe playing regular and in correct postion at another club will help him.

They are both at the club till 2015 so time on Celtic side.

There does seem to be an issue re Tony Watt. Brings back memories of Mark Burchill. We must trust NFL on this.

We are jittery because the CL qualifiers are so important to our whole season. But NFL has made it clear from before the end of last season that he was working towards these games. Keep the Faith and get behind the team 100%. Plenty time for recriminations afterwards if the unthinkable occurs.

Whatever the rationale is for putting Watt and McGeoch on loan, we must stick with him. NFL isn’t going to broadcast the reasons so lets stay calm.

  9. Oglach, SAF had plenty of options in the squad to replace an errant player or a big chequebook. At Celtic it’s a different ball game as Jock Steins man management was what made Celtic great. Today we are a bit short all over he place and if Hooper leaves looking bare up front. From what I have seen of Balde , Watt is a better option for me for this season. Loaning him out is basically forcing him out the doors. I hope the manager sees sense and makes peace with Watt.

I would loan Dylan out for football reasons to see if he can play every week and develop. He needs to beef up and find a yard of pace. He certainly has ability but unfortunately that is not enough now.

  11. Shipping Tony Watt out on loan must be for non footballing reasons. He should be playing for the first team, getting his opportunity ahead of the procession of duds we’ve had over the last couple of years.

Dylan McGeouch has yet to show anything that suggests he will be a first team player at Celtic.

Is there not a Tridentine Mass being said somewhere that you should both be attending? Like on Pluto. Richard Branson could arrange the transport. I’m sure a few on here would be delighted to assist.

    Mea maxima culpa!

  14. is everyone smoking dope, the boys Watt has scored one goal since the barca game and that does not inspire confidence. he can go on loan for a season then we’ll know what he’s got, same goes for mcgeogh and others, if they do well they are a year older and have gain experience, if not we move them on for whatever we can get and look to the next prospect, keeping them in the stand or on the bench is not good for them or us.

think its better us celtic fans get used to seeing our better players go, hopefully we have a good success rate in the cycle of selling high and buying low and people stop talking nonsense about abandoning this policy for quick fit players. the reason we don’t do that now is because MON done it and it put us into a sh@te load of debt that has taken 5 years and the current policy to address.

for the first time in about 5 years celtic have been able to invest in the playing squad and stadium in a big way and its with money in the bank. I hope a couple of new players will be added to the squad and the first phase of the celtic triangle gets paid for and we’ll still be in the black

  15. Morning all from a sun drenched G20.

Sad to read about the likely departure of Tony Watt. Working in Lanarkshire as I do there are a few stories about the player that , frankly, wouldn’t seem outrageous about any young man not earning his living as a professional athlete. I tend to agree with others here this morning that moving somebody on for non football reasons is wrong but having watched Celtic as long as I have it is sad to think of the number of young players who’ve made brilliant early impacts- Crainie, Creaney, Burchill – and who’ve then shot their bolts very quickly. Only Aiden McGeady recovered after the inevitable downturn to become close to the player he looked in his early games. Whatever the reasons for his failure to kick on post-Barca ( and he still looks a decent player to me) I’d now be surprised if he turns out to be a top player. I would be delighted to be proved wrong.

As for this week’s game I suspect I am not alone being glad when it’s over. On the day of the draw I said there was a potential for another Artmedia – the Reds look to be a team which can break quickly- and Celtic’s increasingly disjointed display’s pre season have done nothing to relieve my feelings of unease.

But the real worry about Wednesday’s match is the off field aspect. From what I have seen and heard the ‘peepil’ seem to be almost de-evolving , their bigotry and hatred plumbing new depths. What looked like a tricky tie against something skin to blood brothers in a friendly atmosphere now looks something else.
