Adrian Sproat and shutout records

767

An article on STV this week brought an old memory to mind.  Days before Rangers’ goalkeeper, Chris Woods, was set to break a Scottish shut-out record across all competitions he gave a media interview when he said, “I just hope when we do lose a goal it is not an important one”.

Woods duly broke the record in a Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton Accies but that game, 27 years ago last week, is not remembered for the achievements of Chris Woods, it’s remembered for the fact that Accies left back, Adrian Sproat, found himself in nosebleed territory as he thrashed the only goal of the game into the net.  Records count for nothing when you’re knocked out of the cup.

Fraser Forster has demonstrated remarkable concentration in recent games, when he has been called upon to make incredible saves after long periods of inactivity, but there are only so many times he’ll be able to pull off ‘save of the season’ acrobatics.  We need to protect him and close down space well away from the Celtic goal.

These records may matter little if they are recalled through an embarrassing defeat but, just consider how often and fondly we refer to the 25 league game winning run in season 2003-04.  History is always worth making.

Many thanks for everyone who for getting your seats confirmed for our CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on 14 March.  As we stand there are a few non-confirmed but from tomorrow we’ll be able to allocate seats to the waiting list.  Will let you know if we have space available soon.

The dinner is to raise funds to build a kitchen for Mary’s Meals at the Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji, Malawi, which has 1200 students and no catering facilities.  Children often are faced with the choice of working to eat of going to school.  With a kitchen in place this dependency will flip, those who go to school and get an education, will also get a meal – often their only reliable meal of the day.

Marys’ Meals perform minor miracles, feeding each child in Malawi for £7 per annum, while employing locals to work in the kitchens (which will be used as a classroom outside of meal times).  It will be a remarkable legacy to mark the first 10 years we’ve had out of CQN.

Two new badges will launch at the CQteN dinner to record the decade and raise funds for the Malawi kitchen.  The designs have now been approved (see here) and they are about to go into production.  If you would like to register interest, email Celticrollercoaster on cqnbadges@gmail.com

TB got plenty of money – thing was he spent it all on midfielders or forwards with the result that despite having Thom, Cadette, Di Canio on the park we couldn’t hold a lead against a team from a lower division in a SCSF!

Couldn’t agree more and if that day ever comes that we are invited into the \epl or some European/World super league will be the day that the club I love dies.

Those that yearn for that invite also have to except that what they are wanting is someone like Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as our owner or maybe Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and his family. No doubt the Tony D’s among our support will shout support the board and excuse their pasts buisness history’s or human right’s abuses while building their empire’s.

We may then be able to afford the best players in the world and even compete with the best but at what cost to the ideals and ethos of the club?

Celtic’s share price has almost doubled in the last 12 months, something is going on that the fans will have no control over or say in. As you say BRHT only 1 man will be to blame or take the credit, depending on your point of veiw, if we are at some point in the future bought by some tyrant or venture capitalist with no morals.

As I say I think you are wrong- Celtic were abysmal before Fergus McCann took over on 4/3/94 . They also had to build a stadium . Perhaps they should have gone out and signed Romario , Maldini and Matthaeus in the summer of 1994 and we’d be sitting on bench seats in the Celtic and Rangers Ends as well as the Jungle to this day. No wish to fall out bro – I shall disagree civilly with you.

    BRTH

What would your alternative have been in 1994/5 to the share issue?

I have misgivings re Fergus McCann and stated them here a few weeks ago. He always seemed a rather sour individual in addition to the more obvious failings but , to me, he has far more on the credit side of the ledger than the debit. But then as Ernie would say BRTH your posting has obviously sailed over my head.

Perhaps Ernie would wish us to bring back The Doc , Chris White and David Smith and his two Celtics and Gefinor

  13. BRTH

Very good points, and genuine concerns.

If your fears do come to fruition, and the club is taken over by others unknown, we will be playing with the big boys, with access to untold riches, slightly ott, but you know what I mean, and said others will only care about making money, and making money comes with a winning team, they will care not for the soul of the club, but they will fill the stadium week in week out.

You may well rightly be concerned re the soul of the club, but I would wager that in the years to come, and it’s happening as we type, the soul is being torn from the club, the younger generations may not care as we do, as long as they see a winning team on the pitch.

They may try and take the soul from the club, they may to an extent, but I doubt they will totally.

Having said all that, I would rather that than be at the back of the bus in scotland, where people are walking away due to the cheating and corruption.

If we stay we die, if we leave we die another way, choices, choices, I know the one I choose.

Those risks are there wherever we play.

It’s just that The Great Desmondo is more likely to sell (because he’d make a profit) if we move away from the SPFL.

Sorry, but that is arrant nonsense. You object to fans owning shares in Celtic because someone you don’t know might buy them? At some point in the future?

Better to have shares handed down through family dynasties, like our own version of the Windsors?

What say do we have in who ends up with them then?
