Adrian Sproat and shutout records

767

An article on STV this week brought an old memory to mind.  Days before Rangers’ goalkeeper, Chris Woods, was set to break a Scottish shut-out record across all competitions he gave a media interview when he said, “I just hope when we do lose a goal it is not an important one”.

Woods duly broke the record in a Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton Accies but that game, 27 years ago last week, is not remembered for the achievements of Chris Woods, it’s remembered for the fact that Accies left back, Adrian Sproat, found himself in nosebleed territory as he thrashed the only goal of the game into the net.  Records count for nothing when you’re knocked out of the cup.

Fraser Forster has demonstrated remarkable concentration in recent games, when he has been called upon to make incredible saves after long periods of inactivity, but there are only so many times he’ll be able to pull off ‘save of the season’ acrobatics.  We need to protect him and close down space well away from the Celtic goal.

These records may matter little if they are recalled through an embarrassing defeat but, just consider how often and fondly we refer to the 25 league game winning run in season 2003-04.  History is always worth making.

Many thanks for everyone who for getting your seats confirmed for our CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on 14 March.  As we stand there are a few non-confirmed but from tomorrow we’ll be able to allocate seats to the waiting list.  Will let you know if we have space available soon.

The dinner is to raise funds to build a kitchen for Mary’s Meals at the Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji, Malawi, which has 1200 students and no catering facilities.  Children often are faced with the choice of working to eat of going to school.  With a kitchen in place this dependency will flip, those who go to school and get an education, will also get a meal – often their only reliable meal of the day.

Marys’ Meals perform minor miracles, feeding each child in Malawi for £7 per annum, while employing locals to work in the kitchens (which will be used as a classroom outside of meal times).  It will be a remarkable legacy to mark the first 10 years we’ve had out of CQN.

Two new badges will launch at the CQteN dinner to record the decade and raise funds for the Malawi kitchen.  The designs have now been approved (see here) and they are about to go into production.  If you would like to register interest, email Celticrollercoaster on cqnbadges@gmail.com

    There ye are,conclusive proof.

Even THINKING about an independent Scotland will screw the blog.

What do you think will happen to our Catholic schools if it ever came to pass?

We should all be grateful yo BILLY BHOY 05 for making us aware of this.

    However inadvertently!

  3. Why wasn`t there an announcement of

`There now follows a party political broadcast on behalf of the Billy Bhoy` before the blog crashed. I thought that was compulsory, so you could see what`s on the other side?

  4. Three quick snippets from this morning’s RIFC Shares Discussion Board (then off to the dentist). It’s even dawning on the money men!

*It is clear to me that Phil MacGiollaBhain is just the messenger. You may like him or you may not, but his blog makes it obvious that he has insider information. The question, then, is whether that insider is being acccurate or complete in the inormation being passed on – not whether or not Phil MacGiollaBhain has any personal integrity. I suspect, FWIW, that the insider is being accurate but may not always have a complete insight into the corporate thinking/strategy.

*RFC are now insolvent and unable to pay their VAT bill. The race is now against the bailiffs acting for HMRC and voluntary administration.

*Do you have a source for that information? I don’t doubt that this is a probable outcome but I can’t find anything online to verify your post.

BB….I apologise, if ive offended you.

But….I was just tired of all the politrical to and fro on the blog. Some posters tell me its an open forum, so fair enough.

However, I will stick to my point, imo, the SNP are responsible for the harassment of Celtic supporters, and also I believe there is a sectarian agenda.

As for the Labour party, they are a disgrace to working people in Scotland.

In my view, this country is corrupt and sectarian, and im sure an analysis of Scottish institutions and how they conduct themselves, would support my view.

Take Big Nan’s attempt to expose the masonic shenanigans in Scotland for example.

I don’t trust people who drive about in limousines at the taxpayers expense, and I don’t trust rich people who tell me, that they know what its like to be poor.

Overall, the politicians in Scotland, SNP, Labour,Con, are a sad reflection of humanity.

They make money by lying to everybody they possibly can, and of couse by shafting the taxpayer with outrageous expense claims….These people are dishonest, why would you trust someone like that, or even listen to them.

I know a good person when I meet one, but ive never met a politician I could trust.

So…its nothing personal against you BB, I just cant listen to all the lies and nonsense they spout on a daily basis.

You have your beliefs, and I respect that,….but I don’t think you will be able to convince many people, that the choice between Unionism and Nationalism, is a good one.

Many thanks for your response last night. I had prepared a big reply which I lost when the blog went down. In summary:

    – I share your concern about ownership

    – I think that route was the only option available to raise cash at the time and a membership scheme was not as acceptable an idea as it is today with the hindsight we have

    – I think he (and others!) deserve the (small) accolade of a round of applause at Celtic Park. I don’t see that as being in any way over-the-top.

Finally – I’m sure all will become clear when you interview him! :-)))

What are you trying to say?

    —————————————————————————-======

League Cup final: Rangers boss unsurprised by venue choice.

Rangers boss Ally McCoist was “not surprised” Celtic Park was chosen over Ibrox to host the League Cup final.

Hampden is being readied for the Commonwealth Games and Rangers host Dunfermline 24 hours before the final between Aberdeen and Inverness CT.

The league match at Ibrox was listed as a “key factor” in the SPFL’s decision.

McCoist said: “I did say to the chief executive that if we were allowed to bet, which of course we’re not, get a few quid on (it) not being at Ibrox.”

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster said Glasgow was “blessed” with three stadia with capacities in excess of 50,000.

“I’ve worked with television long enough that I know these boys are unbelievable at their job in terms of de-rigging and setting up for games”

And, with the national stadium unavailable on account of the 2014 Games, attention turned elsewhere regarding a suitable venue for the 16 March showpiece.

“So, we were left with two to consider and we had a full consultation with the clubs involved, both venues: Celtic Park and Ibrox; and with Police Scotland and the broadcasters,” explained Doncaster.

“The key determining factor was that, at Ibrox on the day before the final, Rangers are due to host Dunfermline.

“That’s likely to be a live televised game and, in those circumstances, it just wouldn’t have been possible for the broadcasters to de-rig on the Saturday and get rigged up in time for the Sunday.”

However, McCoist told a media conference on Thursday that he did not feel Ibrox was in the running to be chosen to host the final.

“I just didn’t think it would be. It was my own opinion,” he said.

“I think obviously Neil [Doncaster], or indeed whoever is running the SPFL, made the decision and they’ll stick by it.

“I’ve worked with television long enough that I know these boys are unbelievable at their job in terms of de-rigging and setting up for games.

“Come on. That doesn’t wash with me and I don’t think it washes with you either.”

Dunfermline travel to Ibrox on Friday for BBC One Scotland’s live Scottish Cup game and McCoist is looking to improve on a record of one quarter-final appearance in five previous attempts in the two main cup tournaments.

“You need a bit of luck to go on a cup run and we certainly need that, but we certainly believe we’ve got players who can go on a cup run,” he said.

“We believe, outwith Celtic, who would be most people’s if not everybody’s favourites to win domestic competitions because of their strength at this moment, we believe we are on a par with the rest of the SPL teams. Aberdeen are obviously very strong as well.

“But we are looking forward to the tie and nothing more than an opportunity to extend our run.”

  12. DeniaBhoy in awe of wee Oscar's Courage on

Phil’s latest mentions that directors have been making adhoc payments into Ibrox to keep the lights on.

I was wondering who might do such a thing then I added 2+2 and obviously got 5. Wouldn’t have anything to do with a large sum of cash being stolen from the office of a bus company would it? Or the torching of a half million pound bus which I imagine was insured?

My imagination is obviously running away with me.
