  1. I haven’t read back since the final whistle.

Disappointed of course but no way can I condemn the men who gave us two trebles.

The team, the manager. Yes and the board.

The match stats from UEFA are interesting and show our dominance.

19 goal attempts against 8 from AEK.

How many saves did Gordon make?

I don’t remember 1, but then again I’m no longer a spring chicken.

On the positive side, we may show some urgency in our recruitment and clear out some fecal matter from the Augean stable.

Moussa looked good when he came on and hopefully he can get a couple of run outs and stay clear of injury to finally help silence the howling hun hordes, all 800of them, in 16 or so days.

    Wee reminder.

September 1967, we went three games in a row without a win, losing to Rangers in the league, losing to Dinamo Kiev at Celtic Park in the European Cup, before drawing at home to St Johnstone.

    We survived.

  2. Watch my campaign against Dermott Desmond from tomorrow , he is the root of our problems. It’s not Peter Lawwell.

  3. Neganon2 from earlier.

What disgusts me is Paul 67 is actively lying to everyone o the blog. Distracting us and contributing to the cheating while posting endlessly about the Hun.

One more thing. Feck the stupid race with the Huns. Feck just comparing us to them. We should be better.

If you can’t play the ball, play the man.

Pretty low blow, and pretty despicable.

If you were to call me, or anyone, that in my home, then you would be out in the street.

I think you should take your bitter barbs to Follow Follow where they’d welcome you with open arms.

  4. ‘gg, I love you and your updates. But I will tell much more tomorrow. P67 is not important.

  5. JTT

Neganon’s personal “ad hominem” attacks just dilute any valid points he may make.

No reasoned discussion or attempts to understand other views.

Enough for tonight. It’s been a hard day for me and rest is imperative.

  9. Good morning all…

Hope as the sunrises on the morning after the night before – TET will rethink… galling as the last seven days have been..

It is somewhat ironic that we have been made to gamble on a pot of gold because we were so risk averse.

The Boyata fiasco and the failure to get UCL football has cost us £30M so far… if we fail to get to the Europa, and its interesting that some of the Celtic Park regulars have little appetite for Thursday/Sunday football. it will have cost us £50M – that’s more than half our turnover. A huge sum.

BR asked for more quality and he should have got it. Our squad management this summer has been appalling for all too predictable reasons.

Let’s sort it, let’s have another great Season and let’s have a good European run in the competition with our peers.

    Hail Hail

  10. Good morning CQN from a dreich Garngad

We were the better team over 2 legs, but goals win games, and very very poor defending looses you games.

Get rid of Boyata, Simonovic , give Jack Hendry some game time from the bench, get rid of Lustig, and I am sorry but James Forrestt is not the player he was last season.

I watched him at the game last week and last night and he constantly runs inside, never on the outside, he needs competition .

  11. The Europa league dies nothing for me.

Concentrate on league and a possible treble treble.

We need recruitment badly, unfortunately some of the big players might need to go to pay the wages.

I do not think any of this is BRs fault, more urgency on the park when we are on the ball is down to BR to sort out but the club have let us all down badly.

Bring on the glasgow derby on Saturday and let’s get back to winning ways

It certainly didn’t. Only added fuel to the fire.

A fire flamed by the McCarrick scandal and his tentacles reaching as far as Rome.

Puts our Celtic issues into perspective.

Can someone please tell me when we awe became Celtic supporting snobs eh..

All this ye can stick yir Europa league stuff is embarrassing, if we make it and imho its a big bloody if I and many many others will be there to support Celtic, can I just remind a few of you of the 2002/ 2003 season when you got to the final, how many of you that are decrying the tourney, fought and clawed yir way to Seville with or without tickets.

Grow up ffs, yea disappointing to lose and the suits have played the deja vu card on us again, but we regroup and support our team ( except that twat Boyatta)…

    Faithful through and through…

  14. At least our recruit priorities are clear for the rest of the transfer window. Two centre backs and a right back.if we can, I’d sell Boyata and Smunovic (no-one will buy Compper). Use the Europa as an opportunity to develop into a more professional unit, especially away from home. I’m not in the camp that thinks every single player needs to be a great ball player, so my priority would be getting defenders who can defend first and be able to handle the likes of Lafferty and that wee nyaff Naismith. We actually don’t have enough defensive-minded players in the team and if that’s the manager’s philosophy then fine, but in that case we really need four guys at the back who can do their job. Doubtless, if we qualify for the Europa, the attendance figures will drop. I don’t get that. You are either a Celtic supporter or you are not. At least if we sign someone, we won’t have to listen to “I want to play in champion league” crap. If you want to play in the champions league, make sure you’re capable of holding your own there. Let’s use this transfer window and the Europa to be better prepared for next year. No more going into these qualifiers with the nonsensical trying to buy defenders a week before a qualifier. One last thing, please make sure any players we sign are up to the job (do managers ever go to watch their signing targets these days?)

    ————————————

    Totally agree.

  16. In recent years, qualifying for the Champions League was never about our hope of any real success in it but rather that it gave us a huge source of riches and the outside chance of a 3rd place group finish. But that logic only really makes sense if we then use those riches to improve the team. When that doesn’t happen, what’s the point of going through the ‘agony’ of the pre-qualifying? I think it was The Battered Bunnet who said a week or so ago, and I paraphrase, “our problem now is that we actually don’t know what to do with the cash that we have.” Investing more in the first team could be a start.

  17. Looking forward to Europa League, should we qualify. Competing in a European tournament rather than participating. I don’t mind Thursday night games, don’t like Sunday home league games at CP but there will only be 2 of them. Most of our away games are Sunday anyway.

Looking at Bert Kassie website we’ll be a Pot 2 team so no excuses. Sort the defence and we can go on a long run because we have enough talent from middle to front.

  18. The hand of God on

AEK Athens won this tie because they know how to defend they played to their strengths and pinpointed and capitalised on our defensive weaknesses. The failure to stengthen our squad has been exposed unfortunately it seems to be a yearly occurrence. We rode our luck in Israel and even in Kazakhstan even with a 5-0 lead nobody is asking Celtic to spend a fortune but whatever business they do should be done before the qualifiers. Reading back over some of the comments there seem to be many who subscribe to the we deserve better element more associated with”rangers”.Getting into the group stages of the champions League has got a whole lot harder since UEFA decided to let 4th place teams from the top leagues to go staight through to the group stage. We lost to the champions of Greece a country with a much higher co-efficient than our own (Olympiakos not winning it came back to bite us) we have no divine right to get through it has to be earned and it’s tough and getting tougher each year.I know the Europa league isn’t as high profile as the CL but it’s still Europen football and if we are being honest is more our level at the moment (if we qualify). Some posters on here seem to think we are above this which I regard as Hun like behaviour. ..we are all disappointed but we have to get on with it and try to do something in the Europa.

  19. Well Europa League it is then, and we will know our opponents by tomorrow night – probably Suduva.

First leg next Thursday the 23rd, with the return a week later.

I would imagine they are a bit better than the side we hammered 10-1 on aggregate in 2002?

    Have they any decent defenders?!

Still scunnered after last night btw!

    HH!!

  20. The Europa League is actually an excellent opportunity to strengthen the national coefficient so that we can have a chance of playing less CL qualifiers in future. Well, I say excellent opportunity…it is if we strengthen the bloody team

  21. And by the way I am in no way trying to soften the blow of last night’s debacle, just pointing out that there is still value in the Europa League for Celtic

  22. GARY67

We’re going to need players to compete in the Europa League and a right good clear out at Celtic and someone to show the players how to get out to the second ball when defending, how to track the runners into the box and to fine them a weeks wages for collective ball watching and navel gazing:))

  23. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Another thing which pisses me off. Ajer was suspended due to an accumulation of cards over three rounds.

He was suspended for the second leg of a tie against a team playing their first qualifier.

In situations like these, where teams can enter at different stages, only red-cards should carry over. Literally stacking the cards against us.

  24. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    From The Guardian…

    *

After the narrow defeat in the third qualifier, where a late Scott Sinclair goal reduced the deficit after goals from Rodrigo Galo and Marko Livaja had put the home side 2-0 up, Rodgers, who was also without the suspended defender Kristoffer Ajer, said: “My concentration until I get back is only with the players that are here. But yes, Dedryck would have been fit to play.

“He has been with us on the journey now for a couple of years and helped us get to this position and someone of his quality, a World Cup semi-finalist in our team, certainly would have helped.”

Looks like Brendan will probably agree to sell him now. If it’s still possible.

  26. mullet and co 2 on

ARK won the tie because our quality and style of attacking and ball retention wasn’t good enough to keep the ball from them or score enough goals.

If you are Real Madrid and play with our back line you still win the tie.

AEK lost the ball to us more than we did to them but when we were aggressive or opened them up we still missed the target and then subsequently missed from the corner kick.

The defence should become more confident with the knowledge that chances will be created and converted. We retained possession well last night and kept pressure off the defence but those 2 lapses in aggression and awareness in defence cost us. We don’t seem to have a leader in there.

Hendry was telling Ntcham to mark someone at the corner but there was a general vacant look from every other player.

I find it baffling that we are in this position and that Compper was identified signed and then dropped for what seems to be forever. Rodgers is quoted as thanking Lawwell and Desmond for the activity in the January transfer window. I don’t know if that was sarcasm or genuine delight?

  27. A fiver for your thoughts on

Emerging from long time lurking to leave a few thoughts:

I’ll start with a few recent extracts from our distinguished host regarding the state of the Club in recent weeks:

“If you were to try to match the current Celtic formula for success, you would attempt to replicate their scouting, sports science and maybe their playing style, but most of all, you would need a business plan that produces income which can, on occasion, reach £100m”

“That is why we are going to win the league this season. It’s why we will win “10” and it is why we will continue to win successive titles for the rest of your life. This success is not built upon the wisdom of Jock Stein or Brendan Rodgers, it is a consequence of planning to win, and never lose again. Ever.”

“If you are too young to know how special tomorrow’s Flag Day is, bore yourself talking to an auld yin’ for a while. This success has been worked on for decades. It is a result of denial and restraint, while lemmings were heading for the cliff. It is a milestone in history. It is a beacon that shines a green light far beyond Celtic Park. It is a wonderful thing.”

“AEK needed to prepare an entire squad, not just a starting 11, during these games. This is not appropriate preparation for one of the most important ties of the season. It feels like an inexplicable oversight, I would be livid if this was Celtic’s preparation for this tie. Such complacency deserves to be punished”

With all due respect to Paul67, I have been waiting too many years for a business plan which first and foremost provides a football squad laced with experienced professionals capable of competing with confidence on a European stage, a team befitting the Celtic supporters who have carried the Club through cheating, corruption, poor management and lack of ambition, I feel cheated year on year

Should our success as a club be measured against our ability to dominate a small league or by attempting to do something remarkable?

Do our Board function with a business plan which is in complete contradiction to the ambitions of the football supporters who fund the club?

I am not interested in denial and restraint, should I accept that over the coming years I will be continually disappointed with the Boards level of ambition and preferred business strategy?

Do the Celtic support deserve the best football our money can buy and are we going to see it ever in our lifetime

The complacency of the Celtic Bored deserves to be punished in my humble opinion

  28. £5

Quite. I was equally appalled by the WATP-like arrogance of that leader. And/but was slated by some for my criticism.

Celtic were crested as underdogs. It never dies for us to become arrogant pups instead.

We need 2 x CHs (one naturally left sided and at least one experienced in Europe) and a RB.

An experienced, defensive midfielder to help Broonie would also be good (At this point I’ll say again, Mulumbu is a free agent) and a replacement for Armstrong should also be signed.

We have good young players, they need help to develop and become very good or better.

  31. GARY67

I’m not convinced by the Broonie / Olivier combination in Europe, neither of them tracking runners into the box…

The next couple of weeks will show us exactly how serious Celtic are.

I can’t believe we’re here yet again, I thought it had changed with DD bringing Brendan in.

What’s the point in bringing in a decent manager then feeding him scraps…
