  1. DILLIGAFBHOY @11:53.

I agree with you. He might have done better than Forrest in the last few minutes. What I meant was that Brendan must have thought the cupboard was bare.

Ever one at Celtic Park, Board and coaching staff, need to have a good look at themselves.

The recruitment issues have been forensically examined and have been found wanting.

Equally concerning is the coaching of our defenders, irrespective of who are wearing the jerseys.

They have no shape and don’t know how to defend a ball in the box.

This is not a new thing. It was an issue with Deila and has continued with Brendan.

He has two former centre halfs on his staff, yet every team we play gets chances.

I believe that it is a flaw in Brendan’s football philosophy.

Tommy Burns had the same problem and perhaps it is no surprise that Rodgers was a big admirer of Tommy’s philosophy.

You can’t play an attacking game effectively, unless you have the back secure.

Therefore, unless the manager modifies his approach and introduces a measure of pragmatism, I’m afraid it won’t matter who he recruits.

Finally, we are a Europa League team, at best, due to the restrictions that we operate under.

As such, we should strive to be a good E L team.

    Bring on the Thistle.

  5. just wait till the penny pinching lets that sevco mob in that will sicken back over to happy clappers

How long until PL’s soft soap interview with favourite lapdog Chris McLaughlin where he will tells us we are all disappointed but everything is rosy and it’s really hard to sign players etc etc etc

Look out for 2 or 3 ‘targets’ from the C listers being leaked to PLs press puppets in the next few days, stable door etc…

  7. Thomthetim right to hell with that.

There is only one group of people to blame for this and it’s the board.

They are unambituos greedy and just wrong.

Oh and blame paul67 for cheerleading us to disaster.

  8. Haven’t scrolled back (not into self torture), so apologies if already asked…but am I right in saying our Europa League play off 1st leg is away, with the return at home?

    HH

  9. Arzani is being held back until this week probably as PL anticipated we would go out and has a feel good signing up his sleeve.

  10. AEK weren’t that great tonight, the difference between the 2 teams was the defence. I think we had 7-8 corners to their none. We had umpteen free kicks. All came to nothing.Their defence snuffed out our attack by making blocks when they needed to, or putting shot takers off balance and hurried them. Unfortunately Hearts did the same. God help us, it needs sorting out. HH, Nytall.

  11. CALL ME GERRY,could not ngive a fork about euro league, but hey peter will be out saying roll up roll up everyone , like dare i say zombies

  12. mike in toronto on

    DILLI

it is hard to know if their defence made our forwards look poor, or our forwards made their defence look good

Our lack of movement makes us easy to defend against

But their record suggests they know how to defend well.

  13. ‘ Speculate to accumulate…’ does NOT come into this, we needed 2 CBs , no matter what.We have never been as cash rich as now, and we are shopping in Scotland for centre backs, Hendry, McKenna? Who was last good Scottish CB? Total failure in scouting for me.

  14. 2 central defenders, 1 right back, 1 central midfielder is the absolute minimum required for this squad. We are talking about £15-20M investment here. Will the board do that?

And btw, see all this pish from Phil MacG about ‘Heated Driveways Productions’, please remember that PL is Desmond’s man. The Greater Desmondo does not just get to palm off the blame onto the people who actually show up to the board meetings. He is the one who put the decision makers in place, it’s his responsibility as much as PL. If it really did take the Scottish Cup Semi loss to Sevco to make DD to wake up then he was failing in his duty as a board member prior to that. Bear this in mind when you read Phil’s blogs

Met a few Celtic fans tonight Truro, Lochgilphead (sic) Port Glasgow & Dumbarton …. everyone gutted but by no means at the end is nigh stage

Sometimes Celtic don’t win every game … I blame the blessed Brendan for all this invincible stuff

Whether we like it or not we got put out by a team who are seeded much higher than us… I missed the first 30mins but dominated the next 60mins

At least there will be plenty of posts to read back :-)

AEK Athens are not seeded much higher than us. We were the seeded team and they were unseeded.

Their last CL group stages appearance was in 1994.

Fair play to them, they’re now unbeaten in 12 European matches and were probably a rotten team to come up against at this stage.

But not world beaters and not anywhere near the strongest team in the CL diddy country champions route. Zagreb and Salzburg are better.

Remember also their season hasn’t yet started and they were being labelled as complacent on this site little over a week ago.

  21. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Does anyone else get these fekin RAF popup adverts – WTF !!!

MIT – Wee BGFC, like most of us, is seriously pissed off.

The thing is, the whole approach is so obviously self-defeating. Executives love to look for the “win-win”, “easy-win”, “low-hanging-fruit”, and other such management bullshit-bing terms – we seem to do the exact opposite.

Improving the squad when we are strong is good for the supporters, good for the manager, good for the existing squad and, ultimately, leads to the virtuous cycle of success breading success and (if profit is your thing), money breading more money.

The main elements are there – a top class manager, a huge stadium, one of the biggest supports in Europe (30%-40% of whom will continue to show up only if we are being successful), some high-quality players, a very recent record of almost unparalleled domination.

Some within the organisation – who I know will have contributed significantly to where we are – seem to be undermining this through what appears to be wanton incompetence.

Staying on top – and pulling further away – in Scotland from the position we currently are in should be easy – we have all of the advantages at our disposal right now, much more than at any other time in our history.

As Brendan has said, and as is obvious to everyone, we have a weaker squad now than we had at the end of last season. That fact, and it is an unarguable fact, points at gross negligence. It has almost taken more effort to make us deteriorate than it would to make us improve.

Seen this movie so many times before. Someone said earlier that this feels the same as when Wim the Perm left – not quite at that stage yet but it could head in that direction unless some within the organisation – PL probably – get back onboard the upward football trajectory.

What do they do in Lennoxtown all week?

It’s the old tactics verse players debate, or you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear?

Brendan blaming his players capabilities gets us nowhere IMHO, he signed Jack Hendry

persists with Mikael Lustig ( despite the internet ) wanted Boyata and Simunovic he gave a new contract.

    ( despite the internet )

Successive ‘expansive game’ ‘high pressing’ managers haven’t done well in Europe we’ve got ‘the sieve’ when ‘good’ multi mega million pound defenders are in side like Virgil Van Djik partnered with Jason Denayer.

Maybe we should just not bother with a back four, its all so disappointing.

  24. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

    BSR

Agree to an extent, but the evidence is that Brendan isn’t getting the higher quality players he wants.

If not Lustig, then who should he have played in that position, given the failure of others at the club to recruit?

If the oft-repeated stories re: other experienced international centre backs that BR targetted but who were not recruited, then what option would he have had but play Hendry? I’m sure Hendry was not planned to be the starting centre-back.

I also suspect Jozo might have been punted too had others of better quality already been brought in – but they weren’t.

I love Lizzy, but doubt that he was on Brendan;s “improve the quality” list of targets either.

Brendan wants to take us forward but he is being hauled back by people who are not pulling in the same direction as he is (or we are).

  25. Is it a surprise that Peter Lawell has not sanctioned signings. No

Has this happened before. Yes on numerous occasions. The old Willo flood transfer window was a sackable offence for lawell( he even admitted years later it was a huge mistake

Lawells outlook is always a debt avoidance CEO. From his days with Scottish coal slashing jobs to his over 14 years as the CEO at Celtic

His plan is always the same

    1. Build up the balance sheet to ensure that any failure on Park will not bring debt to the club and withhold his bonus.

    2. Sell a top player to make up for failure

Time for a change. This must be last time this must happen
