Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

    Who do we leave out, that is the $64k dollar question, have been privillaged to see some of the best the world has to offer, in person and on the box, and, imo, I have never seen anyone who is better than Messi, Ronaldo is pushing him close this season, Pele was Pele, Diego was a nutter, even Bobby Moore was a player, no a patch on Bobby Murdoch imo, but it’s like arseholes and opinions, we all have one >}

The Italians were quality, the Inter team we beat in Lisbon just thought they had to teun up, sort of like our team just thought they had to turn up against feyenoord, tis a funny game so it is, see if it was easy, we would all be squillionairs predicting the results every week.

  3. Reply from the Dutch Embassy 18 Celtic fans were arrested by Dutch police in Amsterdam on Wednesday 6 November, following disturbances ahead of the Champions League football game between Celtic and Ajax. 12 were later released after paying fines of up to 500 euros for public disorder. The remaining six appeared in court, charged with acts of violence against police officers in a public area. They will be brought to trial before a judge on 21 November. Four of the six have been released pending the trial. The remaining two will remain in custody until that date. Some video footage and photographic material of the disturbances has been provided to the Public Prosecution Service, which they are now examining. The Dutch police are also conducting an internal review of the incident.

  4. Big Nan,

Finally got around to watching your petition, excellently presented and I would imagine it is a more pressure filled environment than it appears on screen. Full praise for raising this issue and for having very good responses to all and any attempts to mock you or dodge the issues. I liked your points about the USA as here in Western Australia you can also have a car registration plate with the Masonic insignia on it, don’t know if it gets you any favours when caught speeding! They also have bumper stickers with 2B1ASK1 emblazoned on many a rear bumper.

Having said that, I have a good friend who is a past RWM of the WA grand lodge and he is an absolute gentleman and having worked with him for a couple of years I would say that he is possibly the most highly principled person that I have come across, he seems quite out of place in such an organisation.

  5. Sipsini,

On your earlier post about Barr & Strouds, you mentioned Albert the pools guy, could that be young Albert who was the treasurer on the Clydebank & District CSC bus and who debt suspended me in season 1979-80 or there abouts for missing the last three games of the previous season, a Celtic man to the core by the way.

    Sipsini,

Apologies if I missed some of your posts but you mention the B&S lodge! Its a long time since that company has been that way inclined (and it was a huge issue pre the 90’s). It was still a real issue when I joined in 1990 ( and many were surprised I did, as an ex Mungo bhoy with no BB company on my cv) but it has moved way past that, from the days that Pilkingtons bought it, and it is now French owned and part of an international group. I still have many friends there from both sides. Many senior managers are and have been openly big Celtic fans in the last 20 years or so…and even the shop floor has been revolutionised. Any rabid idiot would soon be isolated now. If anyone has issues getting on now in B&S its not down to religion but ability. A lot of that change was down to economics, change of ownership and a few “gallant pioneers” who, before I joined, had to suffer but soldiered on through the worst of times and allowed guys like me to be able to have a career in a good firm.

    cheers

    CANAMALAR

Congratulations to you for getting it this far.

It has never been about beating the board, just about transparency of governance. Oh,and maybe why the board settled for “Sod it,Timmy, nowt to see here” when they “questioned” the SFA

Thanks also to AULDHEID and BRT&H for their assistance in putting it together, and to MORRISSEY THE 23RD for pushing it.

Finally to LEFTCLICKTIC and the anonymous lurker who helped gather the signatures one cauld Saturday.

    A brilliant team performance!

  15. Top of the morning to you all from a still-dark Fife.

A new day dawns with promise of change in the way the Celtic support show their feelings. In the past protests outside and inside the stadium have been vocal and our only way of expressing fan discontent, now the age of internet activist using shareholdings as a tool is on us.

Canamalar, Morrisey the 23rd and Auldheid have decided to test their arguments by Resolution tabled at the AGM.

They will not be breaking entirely new ground as the Celtic Trust regularly do this and this time is no different and they are pressing for a living wage for Celtic employees, the usual fan on the board etc., all admirable aims, but a group of individual fans pooling their voting resources and challenging the board in a radical manner about SFA regulation (or lack of) is certainly new.

The Canamalar resolution might in turn lead to revolution! If the major shareholders use their block vote to supress the fans resolutions I can see the next move being for a group of fans to take their concerns of SFA mismanagement damaging their investment to the law courts.

We live in interesting times. Good luck to Canamalar & Co.

With regard to my petition I will be replying to all comments/questions on an ongoing basis.

I left in 1990 due to their old ways. You my friend joined when the realisation of nepotism and bigotry was bringing it to it’s knees and something had to be done.

antipodean red……Thanks for the kind words and like you I have known some highly principled and decent Masons. Problem is for every one like this there are 10 chancers who use the Craft and damage others in the process. C. Martin McGibbon probably regrets inviting me for coffee and chats since his “Toot if you’re a Mason” comments are getting a far bigger audience than he or I expected! I knew an old Mason who regularly did a short rural run pissed as a fart and just as regularly got stopped and waved on by freemasons in the Fife force. He dined out on this fact and boasted to anyone who would listen about his Masonic influence, until one night his regular rummy run was interrupted by a straight cop who did him properly. Banned for drunk driving Old Andrew cursed the force that had let him away with murder for years.

  19. Morning cqn

I note with interest that Scotsman Graham Wallace will be appointed as chief exec at The Rangers in midweek. Former Man City finance director. Presided over record losses, ( which he stated ” would not be repeated”. Also done some digging this morning and noticed that there was some concern over the accounts being overdue, and some ” exceptional items” in the accounts which were unexplained.

He worked for IMG as well.

Since leaving Man City he has apparently been working as a ” consultant”. Nobody quite sure where. Apparently he has been waiting on the next ” big job” and says this is it.

I get a feeling ” our Graham” as Cilla would call him is gonna fit right in. It ain’t no surprise surprise that this guy is considered the man for the job. :-).

Mind you, he’ll probably be ousted very, very soon.

  20. I’m not really one for writing rousing speeches but if our Graham needs help with one, which will need to be designed to pass off bad news but keep the gullible currants on board, I’ve had a wee go.

” fellow bears, as a lifelong Rangers supporter and billionaire I would like to say what an honour it is to stand here today as chief executive of this magnificent club with its fantastic unbroken history. Aye ready, WATP, follow follow and no surrender. As for the news we are going into administration again, I would just to say the big hoose will reopen and FTP”.

School holidays summer 1970 I was helping my da at work out Lanarkshire somewhere. Anyway the car broke down in a muddy country road on the way home. Couldnt get it going and we stood wondering what to do, this guy pulls up to help. It was Shearer. He actually lay under the car and sorted the problem for us. As he’s standing there covered in filth my old man and uncle thank him kindly but also add ‘ Bobby we’re all good Celtic people too’…he replied..’What does that matter, glad to have helped, and all the best for European Cup next season guys, you were brilliant in Lisbon but beat my coupon in Milan’.

you may well be right about the reasons for change but it has turned out alright. Maybe you were a “gallant pioneer”? Sadly, to survive, they outsourced much of what I enjoyed working on; optics, the tube welding, the foundry, the general machining, but much of that went to local firms. The Thales of now, opposite the Southern General, you wouldn’t recognise but is world class in systems and assembly, and a credit to all those still working there….and a few who left.
