Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

If you’re at the AGM today, can you challenge Peter Lawell to an arm wrestle?

I think you could take him.

  2. Good Luck to all the CQNers at the AGM. have fun……im sure the post AGM drinks will be fun too!

Good Luck also to big Fraser tonight. Hope he has a belter of a game and, although he probably doesnt want this, I hope he sees a lot more action than Thommo did when he was given his 30 mins or so a few years back for England.

‘BEDROOM TAX: The most invidious and insidious tax ever. And invented by New Labour.

New Labour had a chance to correct their horrible mistake by voting against this tax….46 New Labour MPs failed to vote against this reprehensible tax.

The tax remains: The Peoples Party.

    Aye Right!’

    ####

Remember when Labour introduced the minimum wage?

Remember the SNP MPs who ‘couldn’t be bothered to turn up to vote for it’?

I’m guessing there was a pairing arrangement, just like there was with the vote against the Bedroom Tax.

You have heard of pairing, have you Billy?

  4. I like Chile’s coach, Jorge Luis Sampaoli. He is from Argentina, but has spent all of his top-flight managerial career in Peru, Ecuador and Chile (with the excellently named Deportivo O’Higgins among others).

He is 53 but looks and acts much younger. He looks like Inspector Montalbano.

  5. Well todays the day .good luck to calamara . Auldheed . Morrisey 23. And all the guys who fought to get this resolution 12 on the agenda . Makes me so angry that our own board didnt see to this . Just remember anyone who is undecided , that no matter what them over govan way get up to , they will be back , of that there is no doubt . Within 2 to 3 years they will be competing with us for the big european bucks , a outfit who had the governors of scottish football abided by there own rules , would have seen that mob at best playing junior football . Every scenario we as celtic fans have witnessed , has been to keep the establishment team afloat . I commend peter lawell , as i think he is a top notch ceo , but he has stated often and we have witnessed that without european finance our great club will struggle . Celtic football club to move on and grow must be in the CL , and take this in , if were not in it they will be , the sfa have gone to unbelievable lengths to keep them afloat , that is part one , part two is the same as CFC we cant survive without the big money , every helping hand will be held out to them to make sure that goal is achieved , otherwise all there efforts will have been in vain . If a clown like me can see this .why oh why cant our board see the big picture and why are they against the supporters raising our concerns . UNLESS THEY HAVE SOMETHING UP THEIR SLEEVES . anyway good luck bhoys .

    Big nan . I salute u sir .

  6. If Celtic ever crash and burn and form a newco, forge a five-way agreement and cheat our way into the league structure, I want us to be called The Deportivo O’Higgins.

    Big Nan,

Have watched this and you conducted yourself brilliantly big fella – thank you.

On the committee: you would expect – and indeed welcome – challenging questions from committee members; these help to test the strength of the proposal and identify any areas which need adjusted should it go forward.

However, I was simmering a bit at the attitude from some members. They seem to forget that they’re supposed to be public servants. The chairman, at least, proffered his questions with a degree of respect to the petitioner which was markedly lacking in other respondents. The tufty clown was patronising, and spectacularly unfunny with it – he must be a real blast on a night out. The other two seemed to have an underlying hostility to their questioning.

All in my opinion of course – maybe I just don’t understand why any right-thinking and objective individual should be against this.

  17. Big Nan – Phyliss interesting wee discourse on privacy. People doing their “public” job we pay there wages etc should have no privacy but we expect our own privacy to be paramount even when we tell the World what we believe on blogs like this or facebook. In my experience the people most likely to jump up and shout about privacy are the very same who love to tell everyone their view of life in minute detail. I think that Judges should declare their associations because ‘Privacy’ is a big hidey hole. We should all be prepared to do the same and stand up to our own convictions. The committee member’s point about jury’s etc being a wide part of society and what would that mean if they had to declare …discourage participation , only reinforced my support big Nan. If Scottish people serving on jury’s can’t be honest enough to declare pertinant associations that really does in fact prejudice the law of the people. I was pleased to hear you say that you wouldn’t necessarily have a problem so long as a judge or jury was willing to be up front. Privacy is overrated ….time we got over it. Scotland needs to become more open and embrace itself it is to move forward and be all it can be. Maybe next time you can get 10,000 signatures Big Man.

I watched your meeting, you did good, better than good. You articulated your concerns with knowledge and respect. And you did it with a comfortable class that scares the establishment.

There once lived a lady called Rosa Parks.

  20. Taurangabhoy , yes there are certain liberties that an individual must forego if they take on duties such as judging others.

As for 10,000 supporters that would be good but I was pleased with the 3,116 I got, because I was an unknown to most people and could have been a complete nutter who went in front of the committee and played into their hands by reacting to provocation and sneers.

Sadly I watched this happen once to a decent man with a good petition, was trashed by ad hominen attacks after he reacted and the point of principle was lost in the dust of battle.

But one thing is for sure the Justice Minister now can’t do what his predecessor did and say I am the only one!

Good luck to the guys at the AGM, sent my electronic proxy in weeks ago in support of the Resolutionists. Unfortunately, it only takes one man to vote against this to defeat it. Will he be there today or will he also vote by proxy? IMO he should either vote for it or abstain.

Whether it is accepted or not I hope there is a decent debate about it.

I’m not very familiar with the process of jury selection etc. in the UK but in the US I understand there is a process that allows the legal teams of each side to weigh up whether or not they will accept a member of the public onto a jury.

Bottom line is that, for any decision-making process that services a public need (juries, panels, committees, etc.), if any member of such a group has a commitment to some other organisation, ethic, ideal etc. that creates a conflict of interest, then that person should exempt themselves or be excluded from the process. Otherwise they are not acting solely in the best interests of the people they are there to represent. This seems self-evident – to me at least. By the reaction of the people Big Nan presented to, I’d suggest they think otherwise and would prefer the status quo.

  23. Accountability:

In many ways the presentation of Resolution 12 at today’s AGM can be traced back to the events of March 1994 – the day the Rhebels won!

Won the right to be shareholders – won the right to ask questions – won the right to seek honest answers from the Directors of their Club.

This is not modern day pitchforks and burning torches – this is about accountability by those charged with the duty of looking after our; rights and traditions – our finances – our integrity.

Good luck to all the CQNers that put this Resolution together and all those attending today – I will be with you in spirit.

    praecepta (C-for-C retired).

  24. kitalba Thanks for the kind words and it is about time we got up from the back of the bus right enough in terms of our place in this wee country.

When I was young I drank in the nearest place to my home that sold beer and it was an Ex-Serviceman’s Club where people like me who hadn’t served in the forces were given Honorary Membership but I always felt ill at ease as any time it came to decissions on anything or even opinions I was reminded that I was not a full/voting member.

Sometimes as a non-Masonic, Irish-descended, nominally RC Scot, I feel like that in this country and I did feel that way to a degree amongst my fellow citizens on Tuesday.

  25. Praecepta

In many ways, the non occurrence of an AGM at Sevco on December 19th(never gonna happen in a month of Hundays) can be traced back to the events of 25th May 1967?

  26. NatKnow – Supporting Wee Oscar You are certainly right about the PPC wanting the status quo and that is why they are asking the police who are not part of my concise petition (brevity imposed by PPC clerks) but are part of Grand Lodge’s TEN PAGE counter petition which is a complete departure from procedure.

You are right about vetting as an ex-pat, now US attorney who supported the petition confirmed to me and he also said that US Mason/Shriner judges regularly recused themselves from trials on the perception of conflict point, but he wouldn’t put this in as a comment to PE01491. Such is the aura of social exclusion and yes menace of the Craft!
