Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

Visited my Quack earlier . Flu vaccination time .He advised me that there were 2 vaccinations this year -influenza and viral pneumonia.. He added ” one in each arm ” and then asked whether I was right or left handed.

I told him ” left ” and he said ” Ok –I’ll do the pneumonia one on the right –I warn you it will burn and will produce a reaction. ”

The man was telling the truth———–when he stuck the needle in and pressed ,it burnt like hell and 1 hour later my upper right is stiff ,swollen and red..

  12. Am I unique on this blog ?

I am classed as protestant (although I only went to church when I was in the BB), white, born and bred traced back to great great grandparents Scottish and I have no interest in Ireland or the struggle for independence in Ireland or any religion but I do have a big interest in politics but none of the previous 3 (Ireland, Religion, politics) have anything to do with watching Celtic in the country where they have played their home competitive football for more than 126 years now…

I support Celtic for purely football reasons. They were the best team to watch when I grew up and although we haven’t always enjoyed vintage seasons during my life, I still support them and always will.

I have opinions on many things as does everyone else on this blog but that doesn’t make me right or wrong on these subjects.

I would dearly love CQN to just be about Celtic, about football but that’s just my opinion (see above note).

I respect every other bloggers right to discuss whatever they want, rant about it, rave about it and to disagree with anyone who contradicts their firm beliefs but ultimately nobody really cares or does a complete U-turn after a discussion here.

Lastly.. a huge well done to the good guys on here who are procative in raising funds, comforting the bereaved, taking their fight to the AGM and many other good things that come from folk here which are way too numerous to mention.

Keep the faith, always support Celtic and know that you may well be in a minority in the world as a Celtic fan but WE ARE THE ELITE !!

As you said when talking to the committee, Scotland has a problem with the Irish, and it has been ingrained since before an Gorta Mór.

Other communities around Europe embraced Calvinism at the Reformation, but they were minorities (in parts of Switzerland, France and in the Spanish-controlled Netherlands, most typically). These smaller communities found it easier to be ‘the city on the hill’, a people set apart, pure, saved and unsullied by sinful, lost infiltrators.

If you were in a fortified city such as Geneva or Montauban, you could control quite easily who transgressed in what ways, who got to stay and who had to be ejected.

There is only one instance of Calvinists trying to run an entire country: Scotland.

Irish people arriving in their thousands in the nineteenth century upset this and things have never been the same since.

  30. Robcfc11 – welcome (if this is your first post). You are unique as a human being. I don’t think you are unique as a Celtic fan who posts on the blog and are “.. protestant (although I only went to church when I was in the BB), white, born and bred traced back to great great grandparents Scottish and I have no interest in Ireland or the struggle for independence in Ireland or any religion”. Although I don’t know that for sure as everyone is welcome here, so nobody is asked about their race, colour, creed or political affiliation. Judging by some of the heated exchanges here I think you will find the posters are a diverse bunch.
