Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

    AWE NAW

I said at the outset of the resolution that the board would not, could not, stand for it. They would HAVE to shoot it down unless they had irrefutable evidence of wrongdoing.

The best we could hope for was that, having done so-protected themselves,in other words-they then asked for clarification by the authorities,as a significant number of share-holders had so requested.

That would be in line with PLC operations with any company.

What we have is,IMO,better. The board seem to have accepted that there are legitimate concerns, and rather than knee-jerk protect themselves, are working with the proposers on answers.

There are times-aye,I know-when we have to trust.

This is one,IMO. And they must be transparent now too.

That was my thoughts exactly and even if we are back to “normal” prices next season I would take an additional tenner as well.

  3. I’m hearing Canamalar and Morrisey both accepted a signed piece of used toilet paper from peter Lawell in return for postponemnet ofg Resolution 12.

Come on guys?! Seriously! After all the hard work put in by the few on here to get R12 tabled do you honestly believe the bhoys involved would pull it (even though it hasn’t been pulled) without being given assurances from the board. This will be re-assessed every quarter officially for the next year I believe and the bhoys involved with be afforded official communications on an ongoing basis with regards R12 and how the club is taking this forward on behalf of all shareholders.

The PLC actually squirted their pants with this one a little and I see this a major victory for the small shareholders over corporate enforcement.

    Hail! Hail! R12

£120k was being bandied about earlier over the last few weeks (and seems much more realistic). But….

Mr Bankier in his financial wisdom and position of knowledge specifically said today it would cost the club £500k a year and 117 people would be affected.

Either he’s stupid or a liar. Lot’s of psoting on here suggesting he’s not on the Board because he’s stupid…..

    Ghuys,

What Auldhed says, was the argument that won the day, I had/have my reservations but when you are taken into confidence then its no right to break that confidence.

Auldheid and BRTH were party to the whole decision making process and BRTH brokered the outcome with the PLC, so they can explain where we are and why we are here better than anyone.

Discussions and decisions took place I was not party to so I cannot guarantee anything I had to say would be correct, for now I’m simply going to hold my peace and watch developments.

I said I was reluctant to criticise ANYONE, not specifically Mr. Bankier, without caveats.

I also said very poor in relation to his role as “front man”

I said constantly embarrassed, which is strong condemnation, for his utterances.

If you limit your opposition to his views on the resolution on The Living Wage then you should be calling on all of them to go.

For all his faults, I recognise PL as a fan made good (or made bad, dependant on your perspective). I get no sign of football fan, far less Celtic fan, from Mr,. Bankier.

Dermot Desmond has all the bad qualities of a ruthless and morally restricted entrepreneur but he rarely damages us with his utterances about Celtic. Even the one about their history and welcoming them back, I took to be a politic soundbite rather than a vision statement. I am not yet persuaded that any of them want a strong Ibrox club back unless we get some worthwhile reward (and I don’t mean the old Firm crowd back) from it.

I feel the resolution proposers must have been persuaded of some merit in delaying their attack too. As you say, they do not roll over easily.

Finally, I’m sure Canalmalar, Morrisey et al have a very good reason for withdrawing Resolution 12, there may be interesting times ahead.

    =======================

I know that the msm will portray Res 12 as having been withdrawn.

It has not been withdrawn and it has not been voted against.

Quite an achievement by those involved.

The reason it is still there is that SFA gave answers based on the public and Celtic’s inability, because of confidentiality, to probe further based on the detail in material provided by Charlotte Fakeovers.

That material raises significant questions that if answered by the SFA would put the matter to rest once and for all.

The thing is given that one of the culprits is deid, why are SFA not being totally transparent to clear themselves if they indeed have been duped?

  12. If the figure is 120k or 500k is not the issue. It’s about actually being ‘more than a club’.

On that point the logical economic fallacy that we would be better off with a Rangers challenge to CL money than having a free route to it has been put forward quite a few times on CQN.

We are COINING it in without them!

What I hear is that Celtic /PL cannot be heard to say that lest it sound like gloating over others misfortunes.

They have an army of supporters more than willing and able to do that.

‘If you limit your opposition to his views on the resolution on The Living Wage then you should be calling on all of them to go.’

I didn’t as it happens but if they don’t reverse their decision then I hope they are all forced out in shame. However tomorrows chip wrappers will be all about Rory Bremner I fear and on it goes.

    off oot,

  19. For the record I would like to say that I am disappointed that the resolution on the living wage was not passed and I agree with Ernie that it was a non-financial decision as the board don’t want to be told how to run the business.

However, for some employees at Celtic, getting a living wage would be a hindrance rather than a help because those on the minimum wage are eligible to secure working tax credits of up to £1920 per year and help of up to £300 per week for childcare. If for example someone with a couple of children in childcare were moved up to the living wage, this benefit would no longer be available to them and while their overall wage would increase, they would be out of pocket overall as would get much less help to pay childcare costs.

Not for one second am I suggesting that this had anything to do with the board’s decision but for some people, they will be glad today that they aren’t getting a pay rise, strange and all as it may seem.

Only sad thing for me was the failure by the Board to accept the Living Wage. I hope they can expound.

I take it that those behind Resolution 12 got the necessary reassurances, allowing for it to bw withdrawn.
