Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

On the subject of kissing frogs, popped into the suffering earlier to see kikinthenakas to find him continually surrounded by and fawned over by a plethora of nurses, I would have said a bevvy of nurses but that may not be appropriate, anyway he’s in good form and still planning his escape, very possibly taking a couple of nurses or physios with him to add to the list of in house staff he has at Kiki Mansion. Ward 5 Ortho Block just past A&E if your passing. You better take your own biscuits cos he’s sharing none.

  4. On the matter o ibrahimovic, as a footballer he is a class act; but as a human being the man is a disgrace!.

Read a article in the metro this week a wee dying lads family frm Croatia had arranged to bring him over to paris to meet his hero after raising money.

Seems the above mentioned cancelled at last minute stating he had other commitments!, he’s a fitba player ffs.

Sevco 5088 Annual Return has been accepted (but not checked) by Companies House.

Usually means it will be published in a day or two.

Looks like Whyte/Earley claim Sevco 5088 have capital of £10m

Are they sending out a message to RIFC that they’ve got the cash for a court battle?.

  7. What about Schrödinger’s cat?

A cat with a blue jersey is put in a box. At any time that club er. cat can be said to be alive or dead (it entered liquidation, that is a long process) but not both. It is in an uncertain state.

You see another cat walking around in a blue jersey. That cannot be the same cat, it’s just another cat in a blue jersey. At any time you don’t care if it is alive or dead.

What time are you in Glasgow, BT is meeting me at 9.07 in Queens St, he’s being helped along the road by fourgreenfields, whose also going with us and I had a call from WG this morning and he wants to join us for a coffee before we head into Celtic Park, your welcome to join us if you can get to Queens St at that time.

  9. Chairbhoy/Timaloy29,

this from the Independent making a comparison of Zlatan v Ronaldo due to their countries upcoming play-off double header:

“What is curious is that neither have had the impact outside the domestic arena that might be expected. Ibrahimovic won 10 successive league titles with six different clubs, but has never played in the Champions League final (he admits in I am Zlatan to being “fixated” by the competition). Ronaldo won that crown with Manchester United in 2008, despite missing in the penalty shootout, but not since.”

Chairboy, yep I believe that Ibra reached a black-belt in taewkondo in his younger days and as you say for a big man is very athletic/supple.

Timaloy29, I am assuming that those tainted titles are indeed included in that haul of Ibrahimovic’s.

Could be interesting viewing on Friday and Tuesday, although apparently there is a doubt about Ronaldo.

To be fair it is a shame that one of these such great players will miss out on the World Cup, although there is never any guarantee that they will “show up” when there anyway.

  12. Monaghan1900,

Those FF comments are among the best laughs I have had in a long long time. How do they square their deid club cheating Her Majesty’s tax man and our thriving club, which has paid all its taxes hosting her (with maybe a bit of help from her self same tax man)? Do they do logic?

Here’s hoping they field their PUL candidates…..Chris Graham and David Leggat would seem to fit the bill.

HT, there are people I have to work with I’d rather not. Now it depends on the level of misbehaviour of course, but past mistakes, especially from one so young, there has to be a level of tolerance. That is said not knowing every fact of course, and I trust our management team to do all they can to help the kid.

    ————————

Doc, like you, there are plenty of folk that I don’t enjoy working with and I ain’t just talking about the staff here!!!

The difference is that neither of us are participating in high level sport which requires a massive degree of co-operation.

I believe that Tony has been given a multitude of opportunities and that his attitude continues to be an obstacle to his development as a player and as an individual.

  17. here is something that surprised me the other day ,whilst reading the neighbours Hannover paper (I never buy newspapers)…last weekend there were 1800 …yes eighteen hundred police at a local Hannover 96 v Braunschweig ….1000 rowdies from each side were kept apart by 1800 police (Hundestaffel und Pferdestaffel)…as they couldn,t get at each other they attacked the police …15 police vehicles damaged plus a few polis….this was not front page news ,it was 3 paragraphs on page 7 …
