Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

My boy is 14, loves playing football, he plays U15, trains twice a week with his team and once with the school, he goes out running a couple of times a week, 6 miles each time, watches what he eats and drinks, he does all this with no prompting from me.

He is Celtic daft and thats who he wants to play for eventually, will he, I dunno, but one thing, it won’t be for the want of trying…

Soooooooo, you know Tony Watt is not doing?

Soooooooo, when did I engage in that discussion? Simply reinforcing a positive perception of young people. You are attempting to create an argument by seeking implications, when there’s none to be had.

  9. Big Nan, just popped on to say well done on your visit to the big pig pen, was delighted you managed to get straw man included not once but twice, outstanding. I bet they thought oh feck got a clever one here, squeaky bum time all round. Fair made my day. Was a privelidge to sign, all the best with round 2.

Not at all, good luck to your kid, and I wish him all the best, but people as far as I am concerned and my opinion, should cut this kid Watt some slack, Micktt could be the next wonder kid, and fall off the rails, and I would be the first there with the net to help the kid, trust me.

The young lad above us a fair enough punt ….but the endless list of duds purchased for £1-2m is testimony that the policy is flawed

The purchase price of these duds together with their wasted wages if lumped together could have bought us some quality

Spot on. Ajax have had a pretty good grip on the Scandinavian market over the years – Olsen, Lerby, Litmanen, Ibrahimovic, Eriksen…..

Of course there will be those who don’t make it, but if you don’t make the effort there’s no reward.

From ‘on fields of green’ …….. says it all, really

” Stuart, can you take a deep breath when typing – it’s hard to read what you are putting down because of the way you are putting it down.

rangers died wen they were liquidated – check the dictionary for the definition of liquidated – I’d post if for you, but that would spoil your fun.

sevco bought the licence, but as they were a new club, they had to start life in the 3rd division – there is no mechanism to kick a member club out of the SPL except by means of relegation – rangers died, they weren’t relegated.

UEFA do not allow new clubs to enter their competitions until they have 3 years audited accounts – sevco, because they are a new club, don’t have 3 years audited accounts, which means they can’t take part in UEFA competitions at present.

The players on rangers books were able to walk away for free when the club was liquidated because the old club died and the new club didn’t own the players. If it was the same club the players couldn’t have walked away without compensation having been paid, otherwise FIFA / UEFA / SFA /EPL wouldn’t have allowed them to be registered.

James has already explained about the seeding for the Scottish Cup, so no need to go over that.

The BBC backed the reporter (Jim Spence?) who stated that rangers had died, I’m not sure where you get the belief that they disagree with this assertion.

It’s time sevco fans got their heads out of their arses and started to accept the truth. rangers died with liquidation – sevco is a new club (this ridiculous notion that you can buy the historyof a dead club is beyond belief).

You were run into the ground by david murray in his quest to equal Celtic;s record – he didn’t mind how he managed it and was happy to take risks in order to achieve his goal (the risks he took are what caused rangers to die, both the massive overspend and the misuse of EBT’s, which HMRC intend proving was the case).

david murray handed over the club to a man who had made his money from liquidating companies – david murray knew this was the only way out for rangers and was complicit in the whole thing.

since david murray left you have had a succession of owners who have had only one thing in mind – asset strip the club and make as much personal profit as possible – craig whyte & Charles green made their money from asset stripping, they had no great form in running a football club – they were here for only one thing, to take as much as they could from the club.

when will sevco fans wake up and stop blaming everything on Celtic internet bampots and start looking at what really happened to rangers and is still happening to sevco.

p.s. I don’t want you back in any shape or form – I’m glad rangers died and hope that the same fate befalls sevco.”

  24. Alex McDonald in the Scotsman today:

““We’re a club who always did things correctly. We’ve got standards.

“We’ve got a fantastic history and heritage, which makes us different to any other club. We want to get back to that, do things right. And we want to rebuild bridges, particularly within the Scottish game.

“There are people that we feel really put the boot into us but that’s in the past and we have to build bridges for the benefit of Rangers Football Club, get back to where we were.

“You have to draw a line and move forward. I will always remember what certain people did to our club. You can’t forget that.”

    Whit???

This is why they are still in the trouble they are today.

This coming from a guy who talked a few years back about going back to when ‘we had a team full of good Scottish boys’. For Scottish boys read protestants

Did things correctly?!?!?!? Not signing catholics for a century. What a f**!!!!
