When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive. You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.
If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.
Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.
We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team. The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.
Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.
If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.
Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic). It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

Just a couple of excerpts from J Irvine Smith’s autobiography. He was the Sheriff who heard the case brought by Mrs Dougan against the old club following her husband’s death in the disaster.
”I found the evidence in support of the Rangers version unimpressive in the extreme. Mr Hope, in evidence, vacillated among his being unable to recollect such a meting, his denying any such meeting, his possibility of having the dates wrong, being mistaken, admitting that he could have forgotten, stating that if he had attended such a meeting he would certainly have recalled it, and so on. There was hardly any variation on the theme of equivocation- and on that theme there are many variations-to which he did not resort. The evidence here is such that it had to be read to be believed.”………
”If the verbal testimony of the defenders’ witnesses, however, revealed little, their written records, produced in court, revealed even less. And if the extracts from the records produced in this case were what they purported to be, rarely can an organisation of the size and significance of Rangers Football Club have succeeded in conducting their business with records so sparse, so carelessly kept, so inaccurately written up- if indeed ‘inaccuracy’ is not too mild a word to describe one particular minute- and so indifferently stored.”

Sorry mate.
I just don’t believe that Bob Dylan made love to 1000 French women.
Maybe two at the most,if he was lucky, and God knows what they looked like.
Papa John.
Ah….Weeshitey McDonald.
My Dad was his postie when he moved into Rosebank. He ensured that every letter that went through his letterbox was “filtered” through the resident alsatian’s jaws. There was “a whole lotta shaking going on”!
My Da was actually offended at being brought to task over this when Weeshitey made an official complaint. I think his defence was “it’s no’ ma’ fault that Weeshitey has a dug!

Faire l’amour, pas sevco stuff…
Lay, lady, lay, …
Then again,it has been said that Dylan sold his soul to the devil in order to gain fame and fortune.
So maybe the 1000 French women were part of the contract.
The Sheriff at the Disaster Inquest, branded Rangers officials, including Willie Waddell, liars.
Yet, the SMSM virtually ignored his comments.
Plus as change, plus la meme chose. (Accents omitted).

You married to a French babe?
Please, please, please let big Fraser be in the starting line-up at Wembley versus Chile tomorrow.
Love the big guy, and there must have been a lot of work done by the Celtic coachng staff on the raw talent that arrived on loan to us a couple of years ago.
Fingers crossed for the big man – he’s never let us down yet !

Sean Fallon said that whenever he emptied some poor, unfortunate opponent…he wouldn’t go near the player that he had just left lying in a crumpled heap,on the ground, instead he would walk over to the referee and apologise to him.
Apparently the referees loved Sean because he was tough, but never dirty. His challenges were honest and fair, and he never set out to deliberately injure an opposition player.
*This tale was told to me by my da and my FIL.
Celtic had a marvellous right winger called John Higgins, a player who could play football the Glasgow Celtic way, John was of slight build but still tricky on the ball.
The deid team had a wee thug at right back, he ran across the park and thumped John, after some on field treatment John had to leave the park, nae subs then, shortly after the restart our left back came intae contact with the thug who ended up on the dirt track.
The Iron Man indeed.

I am indeed mate.
She is like a younger version of yer women Sopia Loren.
Big Nan – just wanted to add my name to the list of admirers for your efforts yesterday. It’s important stuff and you were very impressive.
You must have been tempted to ask THE question of your inquisitors……..
My mate Gerry Hassan has just been awarded his Phd from West of Scotland Uni, he wrote about power and influence in Scottish society. One of the chapters of his phesis was on the Ibrox disaster and the liquidation of RFC. I have a copy of it but need to speak to him to see if it’s ok for me to publish on here as I understand he intends this to be published as a book next year.

I’d quite like to see Pukki line up with Balde against Aberdeen.
Pukki looks like he could be a number 10. I find that his main problem is the pace of the game. He needs to release the ball that little bit earlier. A lot of his shots/passes tend to get blocked.
Bang on the money.Think once the boy gets to grip with the hammer throwers and refs in Scotland he could be a very good no 10..
Hope the big new guy gets a chance to show us if he can do a job for us up front.Dont care how much he costs,if he can play like a striker,no problems.
Still would like that new CQN hero Alfie right enough.
