Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

That’s who I was alluding to just didnae want tae mention his name, he also I’m led tae believe ruined Frank Brogan’s Celtic career as he bullied Frank.

I had a mate over here who was at one time a polis in Glasgow, he told me one of the saddest sites he saw was the thug lining up tae pay his way at ayebroke.

He said that he and a pal went tae a game there and when they got tae the gate opened their coats tae show their uniforms, “everybody pays at ayebroke” they were told.

This same man’s beat included Celtic Park and he loved it there, in the pie stall at the Jungle they always got invited in and a wee hauf was poured for them.

He might have been a bluenose and a goatshaggers (came with the job) but he never had a bad word tae say about the Celtic, right enough he came fae the Gorbals and his sister was married tae a Tim fae the Calton.

Whilst I agree with you in the main about Tony Watt,I can see why some fans are upset. He is living the dream that we all would love to live.He is a Celtic fanatic.Where he comes from he is treated like a hero.I do think he has shown a lack of discipline at Celtic, and not a one off.His time in Belgium should be spent getting stuck in,trying to smooth out the rough edges to his game, screw the nut,and come back to us a better player. Its all in his hands.Lets hope he does not throw it all away.Looking at our striking options at the moment,he must be kicking himself..

    Evening folks.

Big Nan, apologies for not commenting earlier on your appearance yesterday at the Scottish Parliament.

A very well thought out and good representation of the subject from you yesterday in my opinion. I thought some of the panel members were trying to belittle you with some of their responses. But in my opinion they only succeeded in showing how much little men they are. I have no doubt in this Country the shadowy figure of Freemasonry plays a large part in daily affairs of people, some like yourself have experienced it blatantly and I would guess a lot more of us don’t even know we have been affected by it.

The goings on recently across the City and resulting investigations and head scratching decisions that defy logic, reek of it for me. I guess the most hardest part is obtaining evidence and proving it to the committee.

But all you are asking if for them to declare they are part of an organisation. If they don’t have anything to hide, then what is the problem in declaring their membership of said organisation? I think we know the answer to that one.

I wish you all the best in your quest for answers.

    Dan

Came tae Newfoundland and on a trip tae Iceland via Prestwick was pulled off the plane, when in court he said that 2 of the deid team wanted him tae set up an orange shop at ayebroke, the thug and his fullback team mate.

He done time and on his release he changed his name to Cameron and could be seen on the Royal Mile in full Cameron tartan playing the pipes…I kid you not.

Shearer – didn’t know that about Bobby Jeffrey. I mind when I was 8 or 9 my dad took me to see an Old Crocks match between Celtic and Rangers at Adamslie Park. Shearer was playing and some Hun remarked that it was good to see that ‘ Bobby is still fit’. To which my dad wryly but audibly said ‘ when the f… was he ever fit?’. A ghastly man who used to hing about the Enfield Bar at Burnbank Cross, stoating.

In the early 60’s, I saw Mc.Donald playing in an Old Crocks match at Maryhill’s Lochburn Park.

    He still showed his class.

At one point, a defender had him pinned back right on the corner flag.

With a wee shuffle of his legs, he was past his man and heading along the byeline..

Fifty odd years later, I can still see him, though I still don’t know how he did it!

Big Nan, just popping in to add that I watched and was fully impressed by your argument and topics, especially stating irrespective of race/colour or creed, all forms of cronyism or nepotism or whateverism is corrupt and wrong. In a nutshell, all should be awarded or judged on merit, not brotherhood bull****.

    More power to you.

JoBo, I really hope you get the good Dylan next week.

I’ve been to several Dylan gigs and love the man, a total legend. History will regard him as the equal of the likes of Shakespeare, Da Vinci, Rembrandt etc.IMO.

Any man who can get the “books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy” into a lyric is awesome in my view.

You might have to wait a bit to recognise the song he is playing though as his arrangement changes with his mood.

    Just enjoy it.

I love this blog it, keeps me sane at times as guys post things that I’m thinking just as I wonder whether I should write a post bam someone reads my mind and posts my thoughts.

I’m a relatively new poster compared with most but I feel at home and I must say that yesterday I felt ten feet tall as all those great posts congratulated Big Nan for his performance at the justice committee came scrolling in. I can’t speak for Big Nan but me, I had tears in my eyes reading those posts.

I have met Big Nan once, down Govan cross, we were both giving out leaflets for the axetheact campaign. Prior to giving out leaflets we had a wee chat, Nan told me of his petition, which I had seen but hadn’t signed, and why he had brought it to the parly. I made up mind there and then I would sign his petition and also get as many people as possible to do likewise.

I don’t know what difference I made but I felt that at least I had played a part in something that was important as well as being worthwhile.

That’s what this blog is about, a community, making connections and most importantly making a difference. “It doesn’t matter what you do, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that’s like you after you take your hands away(Ghandi)”
