Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

  1. Good exciting draw. Should pull in decent crowds. Hopefully we will see a few signings that will give us a fighting chance.

Only worry is stay safe to the away bhoys and ghirls

  2. Good draw for home ticket sales. I hope the pricing is sensible in order to maximise crowds.

Plenty of points to be picked up, and experience to be gained for our very enviable annual Euro nights.

I never said we would win it ,i don’t even think we will get out the group, reason said if we get out this group

Although there is something psychologically satisfying in our team winning a trophy in football, there is the much more practical reward of going to Celtic Park to watch our team against decent European teams where the outcome is far from certain. Seems to me that this Group offers that second aspect and I certainly look forward to going to see my team against the renown of Ajax, the fervour of Fenerbahce and the unknown, for me , quality of Molde 9who, remember, knocked out Standard Liege last night).

  5. No chance of “winning this” with our current team, so let’s drop that. If we qualify from the group stage, I will be surprised and delighted.

2 cities with shoe shops = 2 wee jaunts for me and Mrs S of T ..

Boozer in Finsbury Park tonight for a Real Roots Carnival Warm Up – shame it isn’t Rocksteady – but Hey Ho !

  7. I mentioned elsewhere that our young team lacked the experience to deal with the pressure of Tuesday night. These matches are exactly the test that these players need ahead of next years Euro qualification rounds. In that respect I’m happy that it’s a tough draw.

I think getting out of this group will be a good achievement.

  8. Can’t see us getting through – sorry.

Nearly like a CL group in comparison to the easy ride last season.

Delighted, as always, to be proved wrong.

  9. The worst Turkish team we could have got.Van Persie,Nani,Raul Meireles,Bruno Alves,4 Brazilians,I am not sure about, and a few Turkish internationals. The only good thing is Turkish teams really tend to travel badly.Great for me,I will be there. They got stuffed 0-3 away in the 3rd qualifying round,by a Russian team,I think.

    50,000 seater stadium.Fanatical support.

Ajax and Molde home should be winnable,so all to play for.

So your logic is this: we may not be good enough to get out the group, but we can win it.

    I don’t get it.

Did you see the game on Tuesday….we played like halfwits,so how the feck can we win the Europa league?

Will they just award it to us out of sympathy.

Don’t mind me…im still raging about our pathetic attempts at football against Malmo:(

  11. Tough Tough Group

Right now I don’t think we have enough to come through this, but we may sign some and give it a go. Good draw for the home ties, all worth seeing

  13. Terrified for the fans who will travel to Amsterdam.

We were lucky nobody was killed last time.

    God bless and hail hail

Mixed feelings about the draw,Like Amsterdam it,s got loads of great beer bars(and I mean proper beer, not heineken and other big brewery piss.)but after the last time and their fans and scumbag ill disciplined police force,I do fear that they will be looking for trouble again, having said that I wIll almost certainly go ticket or not.Assume they will cordon off Dam Square well before we arrive. We will need good reinforcements before the group, and none should be from scottish teams.Would also prefer a proper manager, but looks like Lawwell will bottle that one.away to read up on the better bars

looking at the draw i think we are capable of getting beat in a closely fought quarter final against spurs after holding them to a 1-1 draw in london, we get Bitton sent off after 68 minutes in the home leg with the score at 0-0 and spurs score a late winner with a vertonghen header despite a terrific double save from Gordon

i cant be any more specific than that without guessing

    Scary….????

Amsterdam , Turkey are wild but the scariest issue will be the price of a beer in Molde!!!

no Solskjaer left last year. they have a caretaker manager called Erling Moe

  18. Istanbul and Amsterdam will be enemy territory for visiting Hoops fhans. That does not look good. On the fitba side the Turks have a very strong side after some serious spending this window. A tougher draw we could not have got.
