Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

Much of what you say is accurate but at the risk of using a cliché, you’ll find thousands and thousands of examples today in the east end of Glasgow that show you that Celtic is very, very much alive.

I didn’t crit the signing rookies policy.

What I said was signing a couple of rookies as our CB’s didn’t inspire confidence, big difference.

When we signed the two you mentioned, each was to play along side an older more streetwise partner.

I am all for the present policy, have been since it’s inception, and have stated that many, many times, but, I have always stated that imo, the policy needs to be more flexible, the rigidity of the policy is what is costing us millions.

I believe that we need to break the wage ceiling for the right players, get them on a Bosman, no need to spend on a transfer fee, but we need to pay the right players a hefty wage.

I don’t belive this will cause any disharmony in the squad, as presently the wages of the squad ranges from very little in comparison, to mucho dinero.

I have not come to this conclusion cos we lost the other night, I have been saying this for years.

We need a couple of top quality players, a big bad ass CB and a top quality middy.

I presonally would like another striker that scores goals, but we won’t get one for the money we are willing to spend or can afford, but for the amount of chance that we make, I reckon LG will do the biz for us, my main concern is losing games, and shoring up the defence should, imo, be the priority.

As I said, and will repeat again, the policy is the right one, but it needs flexibility.

Any time more than two of them and drink get together, hun mob mentality kicks in.

Every time. They just canny help themselves.

    Have a grand holiday,mate.

  12. Hamiltontim,

That depends on what you believe Celtic are. If is a soulless meaningless business that just wants to make money then yes there will be quite a few customers in the east end today.

If you think it’s a social movement that is more than a club and represents something more than money then I ask the question again, is Celtic already dead?

I can’t help but return to this utter guff that Celtic are the most ethical club in the world. Paul claimed this and some of you lapped it up. This is what the board actually think. In their complacency and smugness they think of themselves as great.

And on what basis do they make that claim. Is it because they give loads of money to charity? Nah it’s on the basis that the Celtic support give money to charity. That’s right they claim that they are ethical cost we give money to charity.

They are twisted, corrupt and incompetent.mthey are hiding behind the Celtic support, just as other Celtic boards have done. But the difference with this one is that they have no focus on football at all (Moneyball) and they are quite happy to see the support arrested and victimised. In fact they join in with it. And worse of all, and the act that may have killed Celtic? Participating in the corruption to help the Huns.

I know that most Celtic fans don’t want to face up to the ugly truth. But ignoring it makes us part of it.

  15. BMCUW – really busy can I get back to you but put it this way the total staff is about 500 of which 29 is the 1st team. I’d be surprised if the average wage is 10k per week.

I don’t have time for a lengthy reply as I’m heading out to the game soon.

Firstly, I don’t think Celtic have ever said that they’re the most ethical club in the world but please correct me if I’m wrong. I’d strongly disagree with them if they did.

I get the impression that you see yourself as a customer, perhaps that’s the problem right there.

I don’t and many, many thousands feel the same.

The spirit that Walfrid engendered isn’t dead, not by a long shot. Look at the good that is done all over the world by Celtic supporters in the name of the club. Do you think those turning up today are there in support of a Plc board?

Of course we’re not, we’re there because Celtic FC is our team, it’s that simple.

It seems that the board have beaten you already mate.

  20. Bobby, PL has already been called out as participating and being an architect for the 5 way agreement. That hasn’t been denied and it is simply inconceivable that we didn’t know about it.

We can pretend all we like but deep down we know.

Hamiltontim. It was Paul who claimed that we are the most ethical club in the world and as we know Paul is close to our board and to PL so I take this as the view from the boardroom.

It is a risible claim. As for seeing myself as a customer no I don’t. But the board see us as customers. In fact scrap that, they see us only as turnstile fodder. Years ago I challenged Paul to a debate on customer versus supporter. He refused. I wasn’t surprised.

I am not going back to CO until PL and DD are gone. I know that I cannot influence further and it will take us to once again be the victims to the Huns before the rest of the support rally themselves. I came to terms with that a while ago. I have given up my season book, told my wife not to buy me Celtic products for birthdays etc and I no longer take my family to CP for games either. That will lose Celtic a small ampunt of money and save me a reasonable sum. Until we all start doing that our ever decreasing circles will continue.

We are doing it to ourselves.

    Good morning Celts,

I have waited for 14 years to see Celtic come over to my adopted city. I have watched each and every C/L, E/L draw with anticipation, the wait is finally over.

Anybody that needs any tips/advice on travel, accommodation, or anything else with regards to their trip to Istanbul, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I am going to be in London for a week, from Monday, but on my return to Istanbul I was thinking of paying a visit to the James Joyce Irish centre. It’s located in one of the main tourist areas of Istanbul and would be a great area for anybody to base themselves for their visit.

The James Joyce Irish centre, is a 5 story building with 2 big bars, 1 on street level and 1 on the first floor. The whole area is full of bars and hotels. Anybody interested can Google “The James Joyce” Istanbul.

If it seems that there is a bit of interest, I can also ask for a couple of bands to be put on.

If anybody is booking hotels and is interested in staying in Istanbuls main Bar/restaurant/shopping area, please look for hotels in Taksim or Beyoglu.

Please note that this area is on the European side of the city, and that Fener play on the Asian side. So on the night of the football, it would be wise to start making your way over to the stadium by late afternoon.

As part of my stag night, I took all the lads to a Fener v Besiktas match….everyone loved it!!

I will be keeping a good look out on the site for any questions.

    Hello Norman,

I’ll be on leave for the game, so I booked return flights from Ercan to Sabiha Gokcen last night. Will be arriving at 11:30 on the Thursday morning, so will probably stay on Asian side until after the game, but will join you in town, if you are organising a do.

The return flight is at 07:30 on the Friday morning, so I’m planning to stay up all night; if there is nothing else on after the game, I’ll have a party in the Turkish Airlines Lounge!

Now I just have to find a way of getting a ticket for the game.

  22. the glorious balance sheet on

Interesting comments from Peter Lawwell on the back of last season`s CL exit to Maribor:-

“Rangers going has taken millions out the game.

“We have probably lost more than anyone. We have bridged that gap by selling players and making profits and we’ve kept Scottish football at a level more than any other club and I think we don’t get enough credit for that.

“In order to maintain the revenue stream we had three or four years ago we’ve had to sell players to make that gap. It’s not only about buying in players, it’s paying the bills.”

So is it the case then that the likes of Forster and VVD are sold not to make up for lost CL income but to make up for there being no form of Rangers in the SPFL?

On the 5 loan signings last summer:-

“We could have bought them but we think it is smarter to play them for a year and see if they fit in.

“If they are right we have an option to buy them. I think that is smarter.”

Wonder why Scepovic, Boyata and Janko weren`t brought in as loans with an option to buy then?

  23. Well done to the genuine Celtic supporters who will be attending today’s game to support their team and club. Good to see that real supporters can rise above the negative barbs of those whose mindset and design seems to be simply one of harming the club. Everyone wants improvement and progress – non support will not help to achieve that.

    ————————-

I’d imagine because the selling clubs only wanted to sell and not loan/sell.

If every transfer could be a try before buy then every club would do it
