Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

  1. Broon01 05.59……………..why are asking celtic fans to stop phoning in on radio clyde,,,,,,,youre not one of “thems” by any chance…….if you don’t listen in you wont here them

  2. Just wait until Nani the Fanny and Big Blunt RVP run into Efe in a holding midfield role. He’ll have them in his pocket and run the legs off them; they’ll not last an hour.

I’m looking forward to the Europa now – think that group’s pitched perfectly for us. Tough but doable – exciting !

  4. can a fellow celt tell me i’m paranoid! not sure if its dallas related or the F*CK UEFA banner but every time we play in europe i feel the refs have it in for us. For some reason we are not liked – when was the last time we got a favorable decision – and when was the last time the prik behind the goals actually got involved in decisions? this was a 20m game , a massive decision and i’m still pissed at it!! fed up taking this on the chin. Imagine that had been Ferguson , Murinho , etc….

I understand your (and my) frustration but the last centre back from the Man City youth team was OK.

Need a big strong centre half. Harry Maguire seems to have lost his way since he left Sheffield United for Hull City. Not the fastest but very strong and takes a bit of beating in the air.

  7. I really give up, we are trying to sign another Midfielder, one who it appears not to be ready for the first Team as it appears he’ll be loaned back to ICT…what the feck is going on. LB, replacement for VVD and a Striker. If the latter ain’t signed we have no ambition to go to the next level, albeit it is the Europa this Season but we do need to challenge on the European stage.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  8. Turkeybhoy,

You can add to that the ref’s tolerance of Rosenberg’s persistent fouls. However, i cannot see that we either deserved a draw or a win. On the brighter side, we have avoided the slaughter that would come from playing RM, PSG and Donetsk.

Ronny says we all have to learn. Let’s see if he has from the games against Malmo. Does he have a plan B if 4231 is not working? Will he buy experience?

But he had a good defender beside him who, despite only being 24, had quite a bit of experience. Any new young loanee would play beside Boyata who has little first team experience despite his age.

Paul highlighted in December that the window was where we should plan for this CL qualifying campaign. The back four in Malmo was thrown together over recent weeks rather than resulting from any strategic planning back in December/January. Paul has again highlighted the need to sign players now for next year’s CL qualifiers. We have a week to do so. IMHO signing a potentially good midfielder who may be very saleable down the line shouldn’t be a priority when there are very limited funds.

  11. Draw could have been kinder.

Never mind, come matchday one we will have re-invested the VvD money in four quality signings.

    Basel here we come!

    HH!!

  12. BSR-You know the BBC and the huns will kiss and make up, in time to show the LC tie v St Johnstone, and give their heroes some much needed money

  13. I was thinking before the game that we were due a decision as so many have went against us. When the goal was disallowed I thought here we go again. I dont care what anyone says you need a bit of luck and that disallowed goal would have changed everything the other night.

I’ve missed this. I’ve been avoiding all media (papers, radio, tv, internet ) since tuesday.

    Janko and who?

Tyler Blackett will go to Celtic on a a season long loan.

VVD replacement? Developing players for others. A poor centre half who can play left back. Would we not be better giving O’Connell or Tierney a run in the team?

Centre back on loan. If he excels he’ll be offski in May. We need experience to manage the defence. In Malmo we had inexperience across the back allied to CM who is too slow to play left back.

  18. Don’t know what is the most depressing

The lack of action since Tuesday by the board or the manager or the news that we seem to be on the verge of signing another talented but lightweight attacking midfielder.

To refresh peoples’ memory we currently do not have one, single, solitary defensive midfielder on the books let alone in the team

We have one genuine left back on the books – who seems to have lost the confidence of the manager.

The idea that such an unbalanced squad could possibly have competed in the CL is beyond a joke!

This present squad will be found out yet again in the EL given the teams we will play.

Our esteemed CEO seems to have gone very quiet since Tuesday – one can only hope that he is busy on transfer business. transfers in that is !

We need another CB if VVD leaves.

We need a LB – 2 if Izzy is allowed to leave

We need at least one genuine CF

We need at least one – preferably 2 genuine midfield holding players – that means guys who know how to play the position rather than the like of Bitton and Rogic who are attacking mods asked to adapt. We get away with this in Scotland most of the time but in Europe we will be exposed.

Hopefully PL is getting his arse kicked by DD for insisting that the Norwegian Amateur could step up and manage a club as big as CFC!

  19. It’s taken me a few days to think clearly about the team.

Two silly goals conceded aside we took Malmo apart for much of the home leg. W have lost sight of that. Some of the players who didn’t play well have previously played well in Europe.

In other years fenerbache amd ajax would be CL group stage opponents that we would hope to take points from.

They are big enough names to get some of the fair weather fans out on a Thursday night.

Criticism of strategy still stands but a wee bit of perspective is required.

And I hope the board are getting some good players lined up to help the team. There will be discontent if they haven’t

  20. From what I remember from last season Blackett has a bit of pace but is weak and positionally poor. Could be a good central defender if he played beside good experienced pro for a year or two (last season he was stuck with Jones and Evans) but then our own centre backs would benefit from a good experienced organiser at the back.

  21. Tyler Blackett is a LB who can also play centre back, I think he will play LB or be support for Izzy and another CB will come in with Zagreb CH favourite!

  22. With apologies if already posted. No suggestion that the top tier will be closed which is very good news and, I know will cheer up ole Bournesoup “Open it and they will come” recipe ;-)

  23. Tyler Blackett

Seen this boy a few times – LB/CB. Came through Youth Academy been with Man U for 10 years (Brian McClair knows him well).

LvG played him in his 3-5-2 while he was trying to sign players.

    Big lad!

  25. I’m thinking that Tuler Blackett is coming as part of a deal that’s sees VVD off to Utd

    good point.

i’m going to get slaughtered for this but i think putting charlie in for izzy was the biggest managerial mistake.

doing so meant that boyata had a role on the post that izzy normally took, and took dedrick away from what he does best. it also meant we had charlie doing a job he had never, ever, done.

having charlie instead of izzy also meant that rather than an experienced back of 3 out of 4 we now had 2 out of 4.

There is no responsibility for this is on Charlie.

We could spend some real money and sign the barca back four. Of course anyone of them might get injured or lose form.
