Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

  1. Sell vvd…keep the money for plc fund

    And get a loan player.

    Great strategy

    Race to the bottom

    Same old s***

  2. Can we all reserve judgement till Wednesday morning? Who knows who will sign between now and Wednesday? Then moan and bitch about the squad signings but till then what’s the point? We all knew VVD would go it’s no surprise!

  3. CELTIC will sign Tyler Blackett on loan from Manchester United with a view to a £3million move next summer.

SunSport can reveal the England Under-21 international will travel to Glasgow today (Saturday) to seal his initial temporary deal.

But it’s believes Celts are already planning to tie up Blackett, 21, on a long term contract.

The highly rated centre half’s arrival comes as Celts expect to lose Virgil van Dijk before the transfer window shuts.

Blackett has played for England at every age level apart from the full squad.

He’s had two previous loan spells with Blackburn and Birmingham with United now prepared to let him go again.

The 6ft 2” centre half will arrive in Glasgow tomorrow and will attend Celts’ league clash with St Johnstone before being paraded next week.

  4. Tough, tough week but as we all know that is Celtic for you. Get to the park and cheer the Bhoys on tomorrow if you can. Over and Over.

I see there is some transfer activity, I’ll wait till VVD is gone or otherwise to comment. We need some experience…

  5. Why not stop messing about

Sign a squad of amateur players.

    They won’t cost nothing.

And you could charge loads to see them

    Yeah…genius idea

Race to the bottom at top dollar prices.

    Yeah.

    Sounds great

Regarding the early exit of West Ham and Southampton from the EL, I doubt if either club is too bothered. Neither need the money when the EPL riches is on hand. Thurs/ Sunday football is considered to be a nuisance by the EPL clubs.

  7. Jasebhoy it was somebody on Talksport. who said we had only 27,000 S T Holders.also mentioned Sevco had 30,000.

Good point earlier. Had we drawn Ajax and Fenerbache in the Champions League, along with a genuine pot 1, (only champions allowed now), A lister we would like to think we would have some kind of a chance. Of course no third place in the Europa League, but as always it is about how the games fall, the best teams do not always go through. Not a bad draw, not too much travel, and a trip to Istanbul thrown in. Happy? No, but I’m sure as hell not sad!

    Talksport…?………Talkshoite more like.

  10. Turkeybhoy…………….Regarding your thoughts of the ball that was punched out from under the crossbar and the resulting red card that never was and the disallowed goal……….perhaps a hint of corruption methinks?

  11. Blackett would a great signing.

21, big, strong, fast and people will be surprised by his technique.

Left back or centre half. No brainer.

And if we can make it permanent he is a stick to make us money down the line.

Don’t pay too much attention to the Man Utd fans, he only played 11 games. Young Jason Denayer had an advantage in so much as he played only one or two friendlies before coming to us so had no chance to make the mistakes young defenders inevitably do.

This boy will do us just fine.

  12. My friends in Celtic,

The board and PL are guilty of many things, but Tuesday night was not one of them.

Is Ronny correct : Did we “bottle” it. ?

Is KC, CG and SB correct in that we were just rank rotten. ?

No matter : PL et al, did not step onto that park and either “bottle” it or cause our players to be just rank “rotten”

It can be argued, and it is my opinion that our players were better than theirs. We should have beaten Malmo and the fact we did not, is not attributable to the “suits”

John Collins is absolutely correct. Scottish football in its present state does not equip us for European football. We may have better players, bigger wages and bigger budgets than some in European Football — But–There is virtually no pressure. There is no intensity. There is no passion. Put simply we are expected to win ( Just ask the bookies ) We may lose the occasional battle but it is almost inevitable that we will win the domestic war.

Do our players need Sevco to provide some of the above ? The fans may not, but do the players ?

The players need to provide a comprehensive answer to the above : that we do not need Sevco to pull us out of complacency and mediocrity.

The Europa League gives us that opportunity. I just hope we take it, the stakes for our clubs future path and status may depend on it.

    HH.

  13. Call of Juarez………….Tell that to the players of Athletico Madrid or Seville……….. all players want to shine on the European stage. West Ham or Southampton, maybe there one chance of winning a trophy.

  14. the glorious balance sheet on

“Season long loan with a view to a permanent transfer.”

Aye, just like Wakaso and Tonev were.

Loans structured like this cut both ways. While we have the ability to say “No thanks” to a permanent deal if the loanee turns out to be a bombscare, if they turn out to be great they are not obliged to stay here at the end of the loan. They could decide to return to their parent club or they could decide to move somewhere else. If he turns out like Denayer he wont be short of offers, after all Marseille and Fenerbahce are touting to take Denayer on loan based on how he performed last season.

So what it comes down to is this -if Blackett is poor he won`t be here for next year`s CL qualifiers. If he has a storming season he wont be short of other offers come next summer. So on the balance of probabilities he most likely wont be here next year no matter what. There`s that diligent planning for CL 2016 kicking in already.

Maybe we`re aiming to go out in the third qualifying round next season.

  15. It looks like we are buidling the youngest Celtic first team ever, back to the days of the Kelly Kids and what potential they had. However their biggest failing was lack of experience. MTK Budapest,? we lost 4 goals in the ECWC semi final because we could not control the game. Which is exactly what is our problem at present too. We need one or two more mature players who can guide our youngsters through pressure matches.

  16. Neil Mochan

    Died 28/8/94

    God bless him :

ONE of the acknowledged greats in the history of Celtic,Neil Mochan, died yesterday at Falkirk Royal Infirmary after a short illness. He was 67.Mr Mochan served the club admirably as both a player and member of the coaching staff. He was a player whose talent was probably only fully appreciated when he had stopped playing. He first came to prominence during the Second World War when he signed for Morton in June 1944 from juvenile club Dunipace Thistle.

Mr Mochan soon made a mark as a fast centre forward, supported by three future internationalists in Billy Steel, Tommy Orr, and Johnny Kelly. While still with the Greenock club, he became one of comparatively few visiting players to score a hat trick against Celtic at Parkhead. In May 1951, he moved on to Middlesbrough for a fee of £14,000 but, although he did well enough on Teeside, he did not settle and, two years later, signed for Celtic — then going through an indifferent period.Mr Mochan made a major impact on the Parkhead scene and before he had even played at Parkhead itself, he had helped Celtic win two trophies at Hampden, the Charity Cup against Queen’s Park and the Coronation Cup against Hibernian.

His vigorous forward play, whether through the middle or on the left wing inspired a previously-jaded Parkhead side and set them off on their way to a league and Scottish Cup double in 1954.NeilMochanwas gifted with a truly venomous shot and his hard, driven low crosses from the wing were a constant source of danger to defences, several times resulting in own-goals from desperate defenders. In his latter years at Parkhead, Mr Mochan was most often to be found at left back but he occasionally resumed his forward station to deadly effect, as in the Scottish Cup tie of 1960 against St Mirren when he scored all his side’s goals in a 5-2 victory. Before leaving Parkhead, he took part in Celtic’s epic 7-1 win in the League Cup final against Rangers in the autumn of 1957.

In 1960, he moved on to Tannadice and his skilful defensive play over the next three seasons did much to help Dundee United consolidate their newly-won first division status. In 1963, he crossed the Tay to Kirkcaldy where a season with Raith Rovers brought his playing career to a close.Almost immediately, he returned to Parkhead to become Celtic’s assistant trainer, taking over as chief trainer in the close season of 1965.He was therefore to be very closely associated with the club in the great days under Jock Stein.

He was capped three times for Scotland, two of those caps being against Austria and Uruguay during Scotland’s chaotic World Cup campaign of 1954 in Switzerland.

Always affable and accessible, his nickname of Smiler testified to his enduring popularity within the game. (The HERALD)

  17. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

Have to admit to being fairly despondent at the Celtic’s performance in recent times. Not the capitulation to Malmo, which is more a symptom of our club’s downward spiral.

Lawwells tenure has changed my horizons for Celtic.

  18. It’s a joke now. Selling VIrgil and replacing him with Man Utd loanee.

  21. If Celtic hope to maintain something of a reputation on the European stage and attract players to the club performing well in the Europa league is a must.

  22. Depressing to see the acceptance of defeat.

No ambition…going backwards, no board responsibility for failure.

    And endless spin and bs.

We couldn’t beat Malmo….and now some seem delighted by mediocrity.

And if you are prepared to accept any bs that the plc wish to feed you with.

Be ready to see Celtic plummet into insignificance.

I know…we cant do this…we cant do that…a billionaire and millionaires telling us…that we are skint.

You could not make it up.

If you don’t have ambition for Celtic…well I’m sorry, I certainly do.

Get your heads out of the sand…and look around at the reality.

These idiots are destroying Celtic…..dont stand by and let them.

Sack the board…feck their old firm bigotry.

    Fortitude?

Aye,right. Is that the one where you take a boot in the baws and turn the other cheek?

    ===============================

I don’t recognise that definition? Did you make it up?

    ====================================

I read a few weeks ago that you said something is expected from Resolution 12 next week,I have to say you can lecture us all you want on fortitude. Seems you’ve got loads of it.

    ======================

If Res12 has taught me anything (and it has taught me a lot) it is the value of fortitude, persistence and patience, so yes I have got loads of all.

    ========================

Meantime,I’ll keep happily shafting. Pointing out the flaws. Not accepting anything below what we could,COULD,be,with a realistic approach to the potential of our fan base.

    =====================

Point out the flaws all you like but I have yet to see, and long to see, workable realistic, preferably short term solutions that recognise and will change the factors that dictate the policy Celtic feel they have to follow.

One bad result, one bad performance albeit on an important occasion and all the good that is done before that in a harsh and hostile environment is forgotten. It seems that for some Celtic are not only as good as their last game they are as bad as the last game they lose until they lose the next one.

Aye fortitude. It means recovering from, growing from and strengthening as a result of a blow in life. The opposite of turning the other cheek.

  25. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bourne,Bada Bing beat me to my thoughts about the rekindling of the bromance between the Bbc and their near neighbours.

I think it was last season when the Perth saints played that mob, they only had one attempt at goal or on target.

My preference would be for Tyler Blackett to play at left back as we need competition for Izzy plus someone wth a more physical presence. In that position.

Talking of physical presence, a big strong and mobile forward who can head the ball and knows where the goal is.

As an earlier poster mentioned, a Marc Reiper style centre half please. Our defence improved greatly when Marc was in it. He was the leader and organiser in it.
