Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

Watched Kevin Nolan play last month against Birkakara.. Hooked after 42 mins, he is gash, he is.

If I had to bet on it – I’d say no, and four days is a long time in terms of the transfer market, where it tends to happen on deadline day.

He cost £2m and I agree with others that we’ll have an agreement with him to sell by Tuesday, if he wants to leave.

The important bit is who we bring in, they can’t fudge this one, and if he’s going the names will emerge over the weekend.

p.s. ironic, if he goes to Southampton , who can’t qualify for our parachute tournament.

I do like Stefan J but against Nolan there would only be one winner unfortunately..

As I said players of his ilk should be at least getting a call from Pl. If you don’t ask an all that.

  4. sipsini……………you could see Markus Rosenburg was an inspirational leader, the kind of older player needed at Celtic.

It was the members of the last 16 team who were sold …Wanyama, Hooper, FF….

The policy was instigated after that CL season

Soriano? I’m sure Leverkusen bid 11m Euro last week.

Ain’t going to happen IMO but would be the biggest signing in years.

Blackett? Yeah he’s not Man Utd class but noone in our squad is so that is not a stick to beat him with.

He played left back most of his career then got thrown to the wolves by LVG at left centre back.

He would be a very good signing, who if made a week ago, would be applauded

He was a hero of mine, could leap like a salmon and didn’t have the brains to be scared, a great centre forward BUT money was his goal, I get over Celtic defeats by looking forward to the next game but back in 1989 that was as big a boot in the knackers just because I loved his attitude on the park….admittedly he carried on that attitude with that defunct mob…..

alas as TB said, after he played to the crowd at hampden “it would fit him better if he blessed himself in the chapel !!!!!

I was young I idolised him…….but you live and learn…….

    Thanks for your reply.

I get frustrated on here at the abuse professional players receive. Not one of them would reach the level they have/did if they were as remotely bad as some on here suggest.

Look at some of the abuse Izzy and Charlie receive, if I recall correctly two former player of the years..

That’s not to say they can’t lose form or not be as effective as they once were, but they all have ability that’s a definite.

  10. Good Evening CQN,

I have not read the blog since Tuesday, to avoid the obvious recriminations. So, anything happening?

We had a year to get to the qualifiers with a settled team. Now we have another year to try again. Here’s hoping!

  12. Aidenbhoy, good to have a fellow Cantankerous Cowie bhoy back on the blog :-)

Can you tell me what you thought of Tuesday nights performance ?

Do you think we should have beaten Malmo based on what you seen of them ? How good do you believe them to be ?

Who is at fault for us not achieving Champions league football this year ?

And finally what progress have you seen in Celtic this past 15 months under the Management team ? Is the team better ? Creating more chances ? More movement ?

Oh, ask your accountant brother if he thinks we are on the same strategy as 3 seasons ago

    Hail Hail

  13. No interest in signing players on loan, any players on loan, either we sign them or not

no issue with signing good young players, Scottish English or whatever else

but need to get some good pros beside them and there are few older players in our squad that i would miss if they were to leave tomorrow

    Daft question time-

When they started drawing the Pot 2 teams today Lazio were the first team out and I expected them to be in Group A. But the UEFA guy started muttering something that I couldn’t make out and said Lazio would instead go into Group G. We were next out and went into Group A. Does anyone know why Lazio were not put into Group A?

Talking to one of my mates before the Malmo game I was saying how I wanted Charlie in for Izzy. How wrong was I! For all his limitations Izzy was well missed. He gives us an out ball and takes the opposition out the game. I think Ronny made the wrong call on that one. As for the Nolan question, I still think he’s a top professional, the type we should have at least 2 of in our team every week.

  17. To all you kind CQNews’ers…

Thought it was a gutless performance.

Definetly think we should have beat Malmo a poor team in my opinion.

The players foremost. Management made poor decisions also.

In my opinion no progress from Neil Lennons team same mistakes week after week no movement same things I complained about under Neil.

Lastly don’t listen to him he talks crap.
