Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

If there was one player who I would have taken three, four or five years ago it would have been Kevin Nolan, good pro, hard as nails, and capable of a goal from midfield. Not so sure now, would bring a wealth of experience mind you. Then again Joey Barton, similar background, is back in the Championship, because Burnley can afford to pay him what he thinks he is worth. Guess Kevin will get a similar offer.

I bought into RD from the onset, more in the way that the structure need a good shake up imo.

The fitness thing, the playing style, starting the coaching from youth level etc, and some of the football at times has been breath taking, other times it’s been rank rotten.

Now I don’t and can’t blame the players, never have done, never will, they do their best, and that’s all I can ask of them.

I never have and never will slag off our coach, I can’t call them a manager, cos they are not, I even stuck up for big TM when he was here, had the call from the cardigan not gone out that season, he could well have done a tad better, anyways, I digress, back to our present coach, I do like him, but, he does at times seem incapable of changing things when it’s going mams up, or maybes he still believes that if the players do what they are supposed to do, things will work out.

It’s never easy doing your job with your hands tied and your boss looking over your shoulder.

And the league will be very tight this season, the cheats with the whistles will hinder us at every operchancity, and help our rivals in the same manner.

  3. Auldheid,

Celtic is not a learning organisation. One guy calls the shots. He listens to the yes men he has appointed….Ronny, John Parks. He then decides.

Lawwell didn’t want Roy Keane …not because he was a high risk appointment. Keane is not a Yes man and wouldn’t accept Lawwells interference in football matters.

Brian Quinn didn’t appreciate MONs access to Dermot ; Lawwell ensured Keane fell thru the trap door so he could appoint a puppet.

Celtic is not a learning organisation. There is no clear player recruitment strategy. The player development initiative via St Ninians has not delivered. The scouting system has 3 failures for every hit and couldn’t identify a striker like Nicholas, McClair, MacVennie, Judas if their lives depended upon it.

When too much power is given to one man who appoints yes men an organisation never develops or learns from mistakes. It is even more tragic that it is a Beancounter in charge who does not have one strategic bone in his body.

The Board are lambs and under Dermots control. Brian McBride and John Reid seen the writing on the wall and exited — at least John Reid stood up to Dermot and force pd him to back WGS. Dermot is an absentee landlord and Celtic is now just a dinner conversation topic for him.

Celtics decline under the beancounter Lawwell will continue. It’s a pity that one man can damage an organisation and football club so much.

She’s consonantly in the news these days.

In that case I’ll vowel never to mention her again.

  5. No problem with loanees ., we need all the help we can get to beat Kilmarnock let alone, compete in the EL.

Liam Henderson is a dud and will flop at Hibernian, don’t think there will be many that susbscribe to that view, even amongst the unhealthy obsessives that have been banging away since Tuesday night, and won’t be at Celtic Park tomorrow or any time soon, through their rightful choice.

Tyler Blackett is getting a bit of the Efe treatment ‘booed on to the pitch’ yet he hasn’t even signed, and is faced with the choice of La Liga, or a lesser EPL club. Not only that he’s got a Loius Van Gaal signed 5 year contract in his back pooch.

The bed wetters calling him ‘VVD’s replacement’ really should find a hobby they enjoy.

He was on 55 large a week at West Ham..

Never knew it was that much. I guess it’s the green tinted glasses that made me think that players at the tail end of their career would enjoy a shot at Europe and the chance to work with a group of talented youngsters. I still think that these are the types of player we need at the moment.

  7. Malta Mick Fgura on

Couple of points..Kevin Nolan is gash..Also too much doom and gloom, don’t be sucked in by the hun media..Great draw today…£120 return Malta to Istanbul.. Fgura bhoys will be there..

  8. “We were assured on this site last year that preparations for 2015 CL qualification had begun the minute we lost to Maribor”

I’m sorry for butting in, but how can this site assure anything about Celtic? Opinions will be offered. Assurances? No chance.

I guess (though can’t be sure) that preparations were probably started after losing to Maribor. What does preparing guarantee? Nothing.

I guess Malmo were also preparing.

    This is fitba.

Sometimes the tactics employed by the manager are rubbish. Sometimes an individual player has a nightmare and costs a game. Sometimes the officials make an ar*e of it. Sometimes the bad play of a few key players passes through the team like an epidemic and suddenly the whole team is rubbish.

Usually there is a combination of events and a game is lost. I’ve seen this many times in my 6 decades watching fitba.

This is why I like the game. Why I love Celtic.

I’m looking forward to the team redeeming themselves tomorrow. They must know they were poor.

I’ve always liked Nolan’s style of play and long thought he’d be a star up here unfortunately we can only afford these guys (and even then at a stretch) when they reach 32-33

  10. Hope PL’s not been keeping tabs on big Mick McCarthey?

Big Mick has just signed a Polish CB that had an £8500 buy-out clause!

Would you say that a guy measuring say 5ft wanting to play for Boston Celtics and spent his life trying to get a game with them lacked

    a) ambition

    b) height or

    c) sense?

I think our ambition now accepting our height should be to be in Europe after Christmas.

Ambition has to be realisable to be ambition and not foolhardiness.

I’m not really interested in comparing Ronny to his predecessor.

But I’d be interested in your comments on how Ronny has improved us ?

PS I’m on a downer just now at the malaise that’s like a canker in our club just now. I used to ALWAYS think we had a chance, no matter who we played. Just now, I EXPECT a doing when we face a competent, passionate outfit

  13. See all these folk berating Peter Lawwell were they on here a couple of years ago giving him stick when we made the last 16. With the same policy as now may I add.

  14. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Roy, Le Petit Merde damaged us psychologically which in my mind, we never recovered from until Martin O’Neill arrived.

Martin gave us our pride back.

Dodgy Dave the first signed le Petit Merde to stick it to us first and foremost, get a good player second and to take the heat off them regarding their previous exclusive signing policy.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow, use Tuesday’s performance as an incentive to get us a victory.

  15. AtticusFinch

I think Kevin Nolan’s a good shout, if not players if his ilk are out there waiting to jump at the chance of pulling on the Hoops.

Either way Nolan won’t wait long for his next club.

  16. Kevin Nolan would not have reached the level he played at if he was gash.

If you look at him in his prime, not one current Celtic player is at the level he achieved. Seriously can you imagine Nolan at his best against Johannsen. Johannsen wouldn’t get a look in.

  17. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

I’d be happy if the other clubs challenged Celtic on their enhancement and improvement. Unfortunately, we know that’s not the case.

The dissatisfaction amongst the support is growing and could weigh us down further.

  18. I’ve not had a chance to keep up to speed but I flicked through and we have another loan playing youngster, with the option to buy!

We need a couple of older heads that have seen it and done it or atleast competed at a significant level.

Ffs, are we that skint that we can’t bring players in on that format that will guide the young ones through games like Tuesday?

  19. Another loan signing? Do we have a signing clause should the lad turn out to be any good or are we just giving another teams young player European and regular 1st team experience as well as adding a few zeros to his value. Our young bhoys must be banging their heads against the walls at Lennoxtown. Why do we have a youth set up if we can’t produce players who we can rely on to step up when required.

    Stop the rot Celtic.
