Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

    Starry

But just 32,000…….imagine the demand for tickets if we got there ?

Still grates with me that I didn’t get into the 2003 final.

  2. Great to see the new huns now think they could beat us and are on their way back to the top. We might have been sh**e on Tuesday but we are still miles in front of anything domestically. That mob are in for a shock when they meet us. They’re still feckin rotten.

    I always love the pics!

I’d only say … Le Petite Merde….never ever under any circumstances.

    Keep up the good work!

  4. HANKRAY….

He tore us apart and instilled confidence on the players around him, something we lack.

Some will say Rosenburg got away with murder and should have been off the park.

My view was that if he was in our team we would have gone through.

There is a lot of seasoned professionals out there that could do the same job for us, some on here have posted such players.

The problem we have…is a board that don’t want to spend unless there is a chance to accumulate.

Time they opened their eyes to the general feeling of our support. HH

Think it was political. Group G (Dnipro Ukraine) – it was agreed that first neutral Pot 2 European Country drawn would be allocated to their Group.

If I was following Mr. Infantino correctly! :-)

They are not a fast learning organisation in my experience for sure and I have some experience in that area with them but do not confuse issues on the day to day running of Celtic with my point about the CORE policy which dictates to Lawwell not the other way round.

I read in a book whose name escapes me that in 2003 after the Seville game that Brian Quinn and Dermott Desmond met and set Celtic in the slow lane to use the term of the time and that Peter Lawwell was appointed to manage and oversea that core policy.

This is born out by the fact that Peter Lawwell did not arrive until September 2003 so could not have been instrumental in creating that policy and it is that policy still in place (now known as living within your means) that produces the frustrations after its negative effects manifest themselves as they will from time to time.

Adhering to that policy has got more challenging for Celtic year on year with hyper player wage inflation and lets not forget that whilst Celtic were embarking on it our main rivals were making life very uncomfortable for Celtic and Lawwell in particular at every opportunity through the use of ebts and unsustainable borrowing in 2008 that led to their three in a row from 2009 but also to their liquidation.

Although I could not find the book this article confirms who set the policy in 2003, why it was necessary and who is responsible for executing it.

Going back to your point about internal management I’d point to improved although still not perfect communication channels vis a vi social media and Supporters Forums, appointment of an SLO (and although UEFA required such a post the man appointed is on the ball) .

However there is still room imo for internal organisational improvement but to see Peter Lawwell as the root of Celtic’s evils (which is how it appears from your posts) is not only an inaccurate reflection of how things are but worse deflects from finding workable solutions to the problems such a policy causes or finding a credible alternative.

We will agree on all that

We spend nearly £40m on our Football budget

Now answer are we seeing value for the money that we are spending ?

That’s where most of us have a problem

Now I will back Ronny, in drastically reducing a bloated squad ( been there since Lennys days)

I want the money spent on creating a far better quality First team

    I am not seeing this

Will be there tomorrow though cheering them on

    Hail Hail

What is it that you want? All those that are unable to accept that we are no longer a European force, what is it that you think we can do differently that will give us success in Europe?

I’ll tell you this, because of our league e wont attract great players, on less than £50-60 grand a week. Personally I don’t us to go down that road, I want us to be like Bate or Malmo who build a team of mostly young players who are hungry. You know what? I honestly believe if we stick with Ronny we will get there.

I’m not a fan of the board, mostly over PL’s remuneration and our failure to pay mliving wage to our poorest employees. There’s a but coming here, but I actually like what is going on around our stadia just now and that doesn’t come cheap nor does it happen overnight, these things are long tern and will pay dividends long term.

I’m still a little shocked about this weeks games but hey when did we ever have a sustained period where we did well away from home?

I’m with Ronny, GIRFUY if you’re not.

Last comment- when Ronny arrived he said he was going to change our team and make our average player age younger and go with youth, that continues t be his approach.

Yip, think their about to have their eyes opened. Such needed for change, unfortunately.

Rosenberg was a horrible bassa to play against.

Many thanks for that. Shame, I think Ajax v Lazio would have been a great meeting of scumbag minds.

Going back to your point about internal management I’d point to improved although still not perfect communication channels vis a vi social media and Supporters Forums, appointment of an SLO (and although UEFA required such a post the man appointed is on the ball).

The SLO position and a Small Shareholders Trust (today’s CST) were mooted during the summer of 1994 – the Bunnet buried them without trace!

    Hmmm!

  14. People on here saying we need a few Auld heids, Forget it, aint gonna happen, doubt thats Ronnys remit, Anyway we got Brown Commons Gordon all 30 plus, So how many More 30 +?..Two…Then half the teams 30+..Never Gonna Happen….Never

    … .

  15. I think Celtic. should make an enquiry for Bolton Wanderers winger Feeny.good player with great pace.

  16. eddieinkirkmichael on 28th August 2015 9:40 pm

Agree. Sticking with Ronny the only option. It will take 3-5 years to establish his own squad, philosophy and ideals. I believe he has the vision, Tuesday was a big setback but it happens and there will be more disappointments along the way. Some huns think this will help them, i think it will do exactly the opposite. We have been forced to set the bar higher which will set us even further apart from the rest. First things first, continue to win league games and replace the deadwood in the squad with better players each and every time.

Play better football would be a start. Some passion and balls too.

Malmo told us we were Pish beforehand…………did you see some response from a Celtic player ? Now it’s a game were you beat your opposite number………few if any of our players had the balls to do that and guess what we got trounced.

  18. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

Has Deila significantly improved any player since he came in last year ?

  19. Auldheid

Can I make this quite clear

The spend what you earn policy indeed came in after Seville

That policy ended about 5 years ago

Now the policy is sell and then keep some money in bank incase our gamble fails

    Big big difference

Here is how spend what you want earn means

We sell vic. We give NL 12.5m to invest in the team

He actually got about 4m. The rest appeared on AGM balance sheet

    Forster sold 10m

Ronny was not given that money to spend

It was used to cover up CL gamble that failed

If we had a spend what you earn policy it would make a huge difference

But transfer cash is kept to cover up failure and ensure PL bonus is paid out

  20. Eddieinkirkmichal…

Here, I think we all want the same, a youthful free flowing team.

Eddie, your probably not a pup just like me and like most blokes on here other than Jamesgang (father Dougal) in our job experience is something you hand down to the less experienced.

Just my opinion, I reckon that is where we are lacking, a couple of seasoned players to make the team gel on the park when the going gets tough. HH
