The sun shone, McStay’s Maestro’s ‘Celtic’ won from being two goals down and 25,000 people contributed to War Child, Unicef and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.  Yesterday was another defining yardstick on the Celtic journey.

Getting the balance of these games right, in order to provide an actual ‘match’, is difficult, but the two sides managed it.  There were fewer Directioners there to see Louis Tomlinson than last year, but their contribution to the causes was still welcome.

Frank McAvennie scored a classic Macca goal.  Hollywood A-lister James McAvoy converted a penalty kick and looked as happy as you or I would in the circumstances.  We’re going to struggle when Tom Boyd retired from the Legends game.  Simon Donnelly and Bobby Petta looked like they could still do a job in the pro game, but special mention has to go to Gary Tank Commander (Greg McHugh).  The words “Nice, Lubo”, left my lips as I mistook Greg for someone else after a deft piece of skill.  Don’t ask me to explain.

It wasn’t football as you know it, but it was Celtic supporters doing what they do best – helping those in need.

All this came a day after the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014, when a group of fans cycled from Celtic Park to John Thomson’s grave for the Celtic FC Foundation.

The Foundation is not the club, it is you, me and thousands like us who believe Celtic is something greater.  It works in four arenas:

Health
Equality
Learning
Poverty

There’s no obligation for Celtic fans to get involved, or to cherish any of the above, but I know many of us get a whole lot more out of Celtic by anchoring to these principles.

There’s a sense that we’ll see a new Celtic on Saturday.  Looking forward to it immensely.

When Welsh talks of ‘us’ and ‘we’ in his article he does rather give the impression he still lives here and is affected by what choices are made here.

I’m not suggesting he’s deliberately trying to create that impression, or mislead us, of course he’s not, but he is after all is said and done a writer of fiction.

I did chortle a bit though when he praised Salmond for not being responsible for deregulating the city. Some of us (though not Welsh’s intended audience) remember Salmond calling for the Scottish banks and financial sector to be regulated with a more light touch regime than the rest of the UK because of their reputation for probity and integrity.

As I said, he’s a writer of fiction.

  3. My nephew’s father who is a friend of my wife and is also a taxi driver heard that the CIA have already started covert missions in Scotland to ensure a NO vote and, failing that, the British military have drawn up plans to retake Scotland by force, if necessary.

‘Given Irvine Welsh tweets regularly about living in Chicago I am sure people are aware if they follow him and see the retweets.’

    ###

I’m sure if people follow him on twitter they’ll know he’s chosen to live in the USA.

But they’re not the intended audience for this piece.

The intended audience are people who’ve seen Trainspotting and have heard of him.

They don’t know he’s chosen to live in the USA and won’t be affected by any changes here.

And his use of language in the piece gives the impression he lives here.

    It’s misleading.

Interesting that you laud someone who has chosen to leave Scotland to live in the USA but have nothing but hatred and contempt, which you expressed in vulgar and extreme language, for JK Rowling who lives in Scotland.

A Scotland in your image would not be a pleasant place.

So maybe its time to let those smart young Scots take the lead in building something different and inspirational, free from the whines of the browbeaten, gloomy naysayers and vested interests of the elitist no-can-dooers.

And, while we’re at it, support the bright young people of England in getting on with creating a truly post-imperial, multi-ethnic civic identity and democratic society, based on ability, rather than cemented rank and privilege.

Give them the chance to take the fight to the Tories, UKIP, EDL, BNP and other small minds, without being distracted by the Scottish agenda, which will not go away.

As with the young Scots, I believe in their ability to do just that, without a cynical, moribund Labour Party leadership professing to enable the process, but in reality always standing in their way. Because it’s our great conceit that we’re currently ‘standing alongside’ people in England; in my opinion, we’re just getting in their road.

  21. Funny how Ernie was lauding an US born and bred journalists’ input on the Referendum – but is attacking a Scot living in the US… (Who still has a home in Edinburgh – not good enough?)

Hopefully (Bert and) Ernie will vote on all referendums they are eligible for in England… I’m beginning to believe he’s Jealous of the potential Freedoms of the land of his birth versus the land of his choosing.
