The sun shone, McStay’s Maestro’s ‘Celtic’ won from being two goals down and 25,000 people contributed to War Child, Unicef and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.  Yesterday was another defining yardstick on the Celtic journey.

Getting the balance of these games right, in order to provide an actual ‘match’, is difficult, but the two sides managed it.  There were fewer Directioners there to see Louis Tomlinson than last year, but their contribution to the causes was still welcome.

Frank McAvennie scored a classic Macca goal.  Hollywood A-lister James McAvoy converted a penalty kick and looked as happy as you or I would in the circumstances.  We’re going to struggle when Tom Boyd retired from the Legends game.  Simon Donnelly and Bobby Petta looked like they could still do a job in the pro game, but special mention has to go to Gary Tank Commander (Greg McHugh).  The words “Nice, Lubo”, left my lips as I mistook Greg for someone else after a deft piece of skill.  Don’t ask me to explain.

It wasn’t football as you know it, but it was Celtic supporters doing what they do best – helping those in need.

All this came a day after the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014, when a group of fans cycled from Celtic Park to John Thomson’s grave for the Celtic FC Foundation.

The Foundation is not the club, it is you, me and thousands like us who believe Celtic is something greater.  It works in four arenas:

Health
Equality
Learning
Poverty

There’s no obligation for Celtic fans to get involved, or to cherish any of the above, but I know many of us get a whole lot more out of Celtic by anchoring to these principles.

There’s a sense that we’ll see a new Celtic on Saturday.  Looking forward to it immensely.

  1. Ok, we all have our opinions on the referendum, but surely we can all agree on one thing:

It should never have been a referendum. It should have been a Demolition Derby hosted at Hampden while the Commonwealth Games were going on. Winner takes it all.

That was the only fair way to resolve the matter, however yet again, we the electorate has been cheated.

Well one article was about economics, specifically about currency and political union. Technical, difficult stuff that, let’s be honest, few of us understand or have any experience of. It was written by an acknowledged expert who understands this stuff. And was non partisan in so much as he isn’t involved. He doesn’t have a dog in the fight. He’s disinterested, giving his expert opinion on a specialised subject that’s within his sphere of expertise.

The other was an opinion piece by a declared nationalist who’s area of expertise is writing works of popular fiction. Within the piece his use of language creates the impression that he still lives in the UK, whereas in fact he chose to leave here to live in the USA.

And I didn’t attack Welsh, he’s as entitled to his views as anyone. Just as I am entitled to point out the truth about him. What’s wrong with that?

As I’ve said repeatedly I live in Scotland and I’m registered to vote.

It’s an issue that seems to exercise the nats on here. Particularly those who have appeared since the referendum was announced. Reminds me a bit of Sally ‘demanding to know who these people are’. Similar tactic, similar agenda and similar mindset.

    Will you be demanding proof?

I very occasional post comments on a couple of political blogs. Socialist ones, not nat ones.

  20. The RIFC share price is currently about 25p.

What is the point of buying them at that price when you can get 5 for a pound on the new share issue?

Also if you already own shares, why not sell for 25p and repurchase for 20p?

Logic and common sense are not my strengths.

    ‘Irvine Welsh lives in Dublin.’

    ##

My understanding is that he lives in Chicago and Miami, though he may previously have lived in Dublin. No doubt it was the Guinness and not the tax breaks that attracted him.

JK Rowling lives in Edinburgh I believe.

  24. The Battered Bunnet on

    Ernie

I think the introduction to paragraph 5 just about covers it off for you:

“When I was recently back in both Scotland and England…”

    And also:

“On a related note, as well as Scotland and England, I visited Ireland, where I lived for five years…”

There really isn’t a big secret. Irvine Welsh is a UK “Non-Dom”.

Beyond his support for Yes, is there something specific you take exception to? He otherwise appears to be echoing of your own views in many of the other matters he references, but has simply come to a different conclusion to you.

It’s an allowable conclusion to draw. Just as your own opposite conclusion is equally allowed.

  25. MWD

If Scotland votes “Yes” – will the electorate get another chance to decide what shape an independent Scotland takes or does Alex Salmond have an exclusive right to that determination?
