The sun shone, McStay’s Maestro’s ‘Celtic’ won from being two goals down and 25,000 people contributed to War Child, Unicef and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.  Yesterday was another defining yardstick on the Celtic journey.

Getting the balance of these games right, in order to provide an actual ‘match’, is difficult, but the two sides managed it.  There were fewer Directioners there to see Louis Tomlinson than last year, but their contribution to the causes was still welcome.

Frank McAvennie scored a classic Macca goal.  Hollywood A-lister James McAvoy converted a penalty kick and looked as happy as you or I would in the circumstances.  We’re going to struggle when Tom Boyd retired from the Legends game.  Simon Donnelly and Bobby Petta looked like they could still do a job in the pro game, but special mention has to go to Gary Tank Commander (Greg McHugh).  The words “Nice, Lubo”, left my lips as I mistook Greg for someone else after a deft piece of skill.  Don’t ask me to explain.

It wasn’t football as you know it, but it was Celtic supporters doing what they do best – helping those in need.

All this came a day after the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014, when a group of fans cycled from Celtic Park to John Thomson’s grave for the Celtic FC Foundation.

The Foundation is not the club, it is you, me and thousands like us who believe Celtic is something greater.  It works in four arenas:

Health
Equality
Learning
Poverty

There’s no obligation for Celtic fans to get involved, or to cherish any of the above, but I know many of us get a whole lot more out of Celtic by anchoring to these principles.

There’s a sense that we’ll see a new Celtic on Saturday.  Looking forward to it immensely.

  3. Anyone who is interested in a little culture and who has a spare hour might want to watch this –

The Pure, the Dead and the Brilliant by Alan Bisset.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeQw4k5RMMA&index=19&list=WL

It is a pro-Indy play and very funny to boot. Watch out for the Tony Blair gag at the end.

If you also want an older play to watch on a similar subject go for The Cheviot, the stag and the black black oil.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb3qbFcLYZc

    Culture can point the way.

Both worth a watch and both far more relevant than most of what politicians say.

  4. Bare with me here ghuys…… and ghals. ..

Let’s just say that, hypothetically, I…. me larssonse7en. … is the maker of all money. Me…. no one else….. There is no money without me. Zero…. Nada. .. nothing. … F all . Not a single piece currency.

    Let’s say I make and distribute £€$100……

And circulate that round all of society. Now…. bear in mind. … I make the money. … no one else… ever! So therefore that’s all there is….. agreed? Only ever 100 €£$…. that I created as I am the only one who can…..

And that is all that ever circulates. … cos that’s all I made…. and I’m the only one who can!

    Now….. let’s say I introduce this thing called INTEREST. …Yep… interest…..

    And

    Demand 110 €£$……110…. yep 110… pounds £, euros €… or dollars $ back?

How can this be?? No one can make money but me….. I only made 100 £€$ to circulate. … and no one else can…. cos I’m the money maker… no one else.

How… on earth… or heaven for that matter. .. can I ever get 110£€$ back from an original production of 100 £€$????

And that my friends is how the money trick works…… perpetual debt with all the attached stigma.

    It stinks

    Vote YES.

Presumably because the original $100 you lent out has created wealth elsewhere and that wealth enables the $10 interest to be paid.

  7. Morning all,

I see all the referendum debaters are still voting the way they were going to vote yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that, and the day before that, and so on, and so forth (apart from all the one’s who don’t have a vote who are just opining from their ivory tower).

    Now for something completely different…

Does Danny Wellbeck have the most clinical shin pads in football?

Seems to score a lot with the deft touch of a shinnie.

Snake P – are you sure The Cheviot, The Stag and the Black Black Oil is a pro-indy play?

It’s a long time since I saw it (Citizens Theatre 1970s with Bill Paterson) and I thought it poked fun at the nationalists.

  9. More crazy suggestions on here that the British Secret Services would get involved in the referendum vote.

I know they use dirty tricks throughout the world to support government policies. But surely the government is neutral on this issue.

    Or am I missing something………

I didn’t say that play was pro-Indy per se but it is more an exposition of what Scotland’s role in being part of Britain became and it highlights the atrocities of the Highland clearances and the differences between the classes.

The key line for me in the play is when the Duke of Sutherland is trying to recruit villagers into the army for the Boer war (or some other war there are so many to choose from).

He tells them they need to fight to protect their king and country and an old man says that many men were removed from the land to make way for the sheep.

‘Since you prefer sheep to men, let the sheep now fight for you’.

    That is key for me.

It shows there is a class and community element to the YES movement and that play was an awakening for many people.

Alan Bisset’s play is explicitly pro-Indy.

Both are interesting and both are worth watching.

I’m a Tim who has lived overseas for many years…..and regularly come home for big games.

I am a senior executive in a very large Company…..today we withdrew many millions of pension plan money from a very successful Scottish financial institution…..our best performing investment firm.

We, simply, cannot risk our employee retirement monies after a “yes” vote. There are no financial controls in place if “yes” is the vote.

We are not the first company to take this action……nothing to do with nationalistic emotions…..just economic common sense.

Good luck Scotland…..I fear you made need a lot of it

It is a significant factor that it is the UK government who has singularly refused to enter into any discussions about the future in the event of a Yes vote? That being so, it cannot be beyond the bounds of reasonableness, if that happens, then such financial controls will (have to) be put in place for the benefit of rumpUK and an independent Scotland.

He chose to live in the US. He wasn’t compelled to. If he’s going to try to influence opinion in this country I think it’s only fair that people know that he no longer lives here and where he has chosen to live.

Anyone who cares where Irvine Welsh lives can easily find out and decide for themselves whether it makes one iota of a difference to what he writes.

Actually you’re correct to call this. I’ve seen plenty of expats No opinions being dismissed because they don’t live here, so fair’s fair – not by me though. I’m happy for Irvine Welsh to express his opinion.

I do have a bit of an issue with non-Scots not living in Scotland (with the exception of politicians) chiming in, but even then it’s always worth getting another viewpoint.
