Anderlecht and Hibs will keep adrenaline flowing

287

Celtic are used to putting in the miles but this month they play an incredible six home games, surely a record (?), with away trips only to Edinburgh to face Hibs and Hearts, and Dundee. If you are keeping an eye on historical records, eight of our 12 games until February are at home, with a trip across town to Firhill the only other away game on the schedule during the period. Deal with Hibs on Sunday, and we will take on an even more formidable look.

8 games in 29 days is as packed a schedule as anyone in Europe will have this month, but the lack of travel will help players prepare for each subsequent game.

The unbeaten domestic run is set-aside tomorrow as we conclude the Champions League group stage against a resurgent Anderlecht. We will talk more about this game tomorrow, but get through this one, and the adrenaline will flow sufficiently to see us through to the winter break.

My tuppence worth on your post. Personally don’t think it is a good idea to have posters edit their own posts… I would suggest read before you post, to coin a phrase, think before you speak…:)

On your suggestion about Mods editing and reposting without the offending words would be time consuming and as you already acknowledged it is voluntary.

Not yourself but someone else highlighted that an offending post remained undeleted. Mods are not here 24/7 and when they do read back they may miss an offending post, it is not that they are inconsistent. I would reiterate it is voluntary.

Winning Captains alluded last night about forthcoming changes, he is one up on me.

I am human and have a heart. I too would like to offer my best wishes to EUROCHAMPS67 and offer my Prayers for a successful and speedy recovery.

  2. EC67 – Wasn’t aware you were in hospital pal – I pray everything went well. I know football takes a back seat at times like this, even Celtic!, but I do know you’ll get a lift out of seeing the Bhoys qualify for the Europa League tomorrow night. Hope you are well enough to watch. Thoughts and prayers with you and yours.

No probs. I never took it as a dig, but even if it had been, equally no probs.

    SoT/Big Packy … cheers, lads.

Gearoid … how ya doing? I am hoping that this may bring about a split in the unionist camp, and speed reunification efforts … but, as you say, there is a small number of them that are so deeply entrenched in thier views, and seem to carry power disproportionate to their numbers …

Almore…. how are you doing? you making sure that Magwai is behaving? a cafe? what a great idea! why have you not mentioned it before now?!

off to my meeting …. will check in later lads. Hopefully there will some good news on Euro by then…

Tomorrow is probably the most important game of the season for us so far,we’ll have to play well to qualify for the last 32 in the Europa League, fancy that we will get through no bother, 3 or 4 -0 But if the Celtic turn up the heat it could be more.

    BRTH.

I’ll see you in the Blane Valley on Friday at the CQN Christmas Party and give you a donation for Mary’s Meals, I couldn’t break my long standing effort to never bet on Celtic to win, I’ll just give you the Money at the Doo.(I take it you’ll be there on Friday).

Finally. I’ll be in the Blane Valley just after 3.00pm tomorrow.

  6. OldTim, I could be in the BV at 3,00pm as well if I wanted to but unfortunately I have a much lower tolerance level on alcohol then ye hardy Bhoys over there.

Having come a long way from Tipperary I need to be in a fit condition to view the game so I will delay my grand entrance until 4pm.

  7. Cheers Almore. Looking forward to a catch up in Glasgow with a few pals and hopefully we get a positive result tomorrow night to top it all off.

    Great posts both.

Last Friday, I carried the coffin of my cousin Stephen Michael Farrell through the doors and into The Melrose Crematorium.

The Crematorium is in a beautiful and peaceful location and it provided a serene setting in which to say goodbye to someone whom I will always think of as the gentle rebel if not necessarily the gentle rhebel!

Stephen was born into an Irish Catholic Supporting Celtic family who were god fearing and had considerable connections to St Peter’s in Partick.

He was bright, intelligent and gained very good grades when attending St Aloysius where he was educated by the Jesuits with the result that …………. he hated the school from start to finish, hated all it stood for, its exclusive “wealth based” admissions policy, holier than thou opinion of itself and what he saw as the hypocrisy of that particular branch of the Catholic Church.

It was for this reason that we were treated to a humanist service at the Crematorium.

Such was his hatred of the school that on one occasion he packed all of his clothes into a suitcase, left the suitcase in the hall of the family home on Byres Road and left a note on top for his parents saying that if they sent him back to that bloody school he would run away.

Well, they did and he didn’t, but Stephen the rebel had been born.

At some stage, and I can’t remember when, despite being taken to Celtic Park on more than a few occasions, he announced with absolute conviction that he would support Partick Thistle for the rest of his life.

I have no idea what brought about this tearing up of family tradition, but, true to his word, he follwed The Jags from that day to the day he died.

He was always keen on hearing about Celtic, but they were not his team. Before he died, he asked that I send him the books I had written on Celtic and any articles I could lay my hands on. Sadly, he never lived to read them, but he was still interested though he followed every kick of the ball made by a Jags player from the borders.

When we laid is coffin on the rollers at the crematorium, we draped it in his jags scarf which was later given to his step son Marcus to keep.

Marcus, is an Edinburgh born Celtic supporter — but you would think that scarf was as valuable as the European Cup the way he took it and held it.

Football is a simple game. Played and supported well by people like Stephen, it is a great and humbling game where you meet some fantastic people who just might not support the same team as you.

Guys like Stephen might not have supported Celtic but he had everything good about Celtic running through his DNA and in the way he conducted himself and looked at life.

He will be sitting on a seat in the big Tennents Bar in the Sky, wearing his Thistle scarf, but cheering on Celtic tomorrow night — That is just the kind of thing he would do. Cheers Celtic but always reminding you that he was a Jags man.

He also loved Fairport Convention and would go virtually anywhere to hear them — still sporting that bloody red and yellow scarf.

He was also the undefeated Subutteo champion of Byres Road where every team under the sun, from every country and with all available stars……….. lost to Partick Thistle.

He collected all the teams and made sure that at some stage Thistle beat them all!!

So, here is to Stephen – maybe not a Celtic man per se, but most definitely a Celt and a Jag …… though he would bloody well argue that it might not be in that order!

Thanks to everyone who has supported my Mary’s Meals campaign and those who have pledged £3/goal for every goal we score against Anderlecht.

Feeding 805 kids for a year is a big target but all donations made before 31st December will be matched by some big hearted supporters of the charity so anything donated before then will double in value.

I think I will be on the beer on Friday but am partial to a classy glass of White — Voignier or a Suavignon Blanc.

Then again, after a few beers I will drink anything as many well know.

I have even helped scoosh a bottle of Limoncello with Kickintheknackas when he was doing his two hours long Frank Sinatra impersonation!

Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my earlier post – at least someone did :-)))

Just for clarity, there was absolutely no criticism implied or intended of you and other(s) who give up their own time to try to ensure sanity prevails on these pages.

The ‘edit’ suggestion I still think is one that could work. It would give posters an opportunity to reconsider what they had written, and change or remove their own comments, saving the moderators having to do it. I believe in large part, that this would work, as most offenders happily concede they have stepped over the line when it’s pointed out to them.

As for the think before you post……i have no problem with the ‘thinking’ part but sometimes have a problem with the ‘typing’ part and frequently read before I post, but, like many others, I’m sure, don’t spot the typos which make me look more of an eejit than i really am. C’est la vie.

Happy to bow to your superior knowledge and experience when it comes to reading through the posts and making a judgement on what can and can’t remain here. No problem with that.

Thanks to you and the others for giving up your own time. Hopefully, you won’t have cause to respond to any more of my inane rambling. ;-)

I think the DUP are caught between a rock and a hard Brexit. As,increasingly, are we all. Hard Brexit means hard border. That means financial suicide for the North.

(Strangely, people seem to understand this and are trying to avoid it,but put their fingers in their ears at the mere suggestion that a hard Brexit is suicide for UK as a whole.)

Putting NI on a different political and economic status from the rest of UK in order to facilitate this means that NI is politically closer to Dublin than to London. It’s a truly shocking conundrum for them. Do you die by the principles you’ve built your entire life on,or suck it up and prosper?
