Ange reframing challenges

137

You forget the ones you win so quickly.   Details from the 6-0 disposal of KR Reykjavik, only a year ago are difficult to recall, not so Ferencvaros in the next round.  One year earlier, it was Cluj who scored four at Celtic Park to eliminate us from the Champions League, details of that night are forever etched in your memory.

Vasilis Barkas made his Celtic Park debut with a successful AEK Athens side in 2018.  AEK were not world-beaters but were the best team to knock us out of Champions League qualifiers over the last decade.

Having won a reprieve from a 6-1 aggregate defeat to Legia Warsaw, Ronny Deila had Champions League qualification in his hands after dominating in a draw away to Maribor, but the loss of a late goal at home was a portent for his time at the club.  The next season’s elimination to Malmo was even more painful.  Ferencvaros, Cluj, Maribor and Malmo is a tale of what could and should have been.

Even with our fragilities, Celtic are a better side than Midtjylland.  I doubt they have a single player who interested Ange Postecoglou as a signing target.

Did you notice how Ange reframed challenges as opportunities?  “You can always grasp for excuses and reasons why you can’t do something, but there’s an opportunity to do something special and it falls on the players who are available. There’s no reason why they can’t take that.”

I like this type of thinking, it inspires people to aim ever higher.  Pick up the challenge, Celtic, and we can consign Midtjylland to distant memory, along with Riga and Kalju Nomme.

Everyone we played against last season did.

Have we improved our back 4 .

    Absolutely not.

  5. Just when I’m starting to make sense of MadMitch’s posts we go and sign some new players 🤷‍♀️

Theres a huge transfer market in Internationalists now. The Cuban Men’s Volleyball team, who did not make it to this Olympics, following a rape scandal in Finland and large scale defections of athletes, is supplying a fair few players to other countries.

The 3rd ranked team Poland, have Leon. The 4th ranked Italy have the nephew of the great Alberto Juantorena playing for them. Leal is with top ranked Brazil.

Your Canada team has made it this year from their 10th ranking spot and are doing well.

I support the Poles, since their 1976 Montreal triumph over the USSR, but I suspect the Olympic ROC team with the great Maxim Mikhaylov willl win this one

  8. we need to be on top of our offensive game tonight – christie , Eduard, Ajeti , forrest due goals.

The only prediction I’m confident of making is ……the ref will be anti celtic. Can anyone remember us getting a decent ref, a dodgy call in our favor in Europe – me neither!

“These are some of the Celtic related memories I will carry to my grave. Others, which I will share on another day on here, were playing 5 a side with Harry Hood in the old Taylor Street gym in Townhead in 1966/67, ”

    ————————–

I remember the old Taylor Street gym without much fondness. A huge cavernous cold building which was heated by a two bar electric heater about 20 feet above the floor. A large curtain divided the hall into two playing surfaces. We hared our training slots with the Archery Club so whenever the ball ran under the curtain into their area, a brave volunteer had to retrieve it. The Archers would just point their bows up in the air while you retrieved it. You never escaped the frear that they were waiting for you to reach your ball before they would take aim again.

I shared the dressing room space with Frank Clements who was 5th in that Montreal 1976 Olympic 1500 M final and Lawrie Spence who represented Scotland at the Edmonton Commonwelath games in 1978. A terribly poor facility and I got to enjoy the new gym in John Street before I graduated.

    Close to £100m, I’d say.

  11. An Dún

Disagree, it was a perfectly good tackle and Welsh won the ball cleanly. The referee was at fault for not picking up the dive. All imo, of course. Agree on the need to avoid set pieces though. Here’s hoping 🙏🤞😊🍀

Now that provided a rare laugh today…..

No point in counting beans anyway. Mr. heinz has done it and says the answer is 57.

  13. Friesdorfer – not enough was made of that tackle. It was a brilliantly timed tackle and a 50-50. He won the ball fairly from the side and NEVER a foul!

  14. Let me get this right. Celtic don’t compete in a competative league and for near ten years had an open goal, so they should be able to qualify and compete in a much better league?

I also remember the John St. gym. It was a bit small, but we used to do a circuit in it, then go running outside on John St, Parliamentary Rd, Montrose St, Richmond St. The hills were a killer. We often finished with a dip in the pool. Great times.

  16. ” I doubt they have a single player who interested AP as a signing target”

    Which translated from the original hubristic Greek means;

“Not one of their players is good enough to get into our team”

Actually thought the Brazilian Evander was a decent player

    hopethemidgiesdontreadcqncsc

  17. btw – celtic NOT signing players has nothing to do with COVID. Its everything to do with penny pinching! If a player has the choice of Turkey, Spain , Italy over Scotland – most of the time they chose the continent. This is why Celtic need to pay more and be creative with dealings.

Unfortunately we are old school – imagine bankier?>. He’d drain the life out of a player!

Covid affects when they get here to play – not whether they sign of not! I cannot believe for the life of me, despite the massive media attention these last 4-5 weeks, we still have not signed full backs!

Of course you have- everyone has!

What you may not have, however, is the right to claim that you never make personal attacks.

Looking at Vasilis Barkas, he reminds me of a Modern Studies teacher we had at Holyrood back in the day. He was crap in goals too.

I know Scott Bain is not ideal but surely he’s a safer bet tonight than Barkas whose confidence is shattered. If the Greek keeper starts tonight I’ll be astounded of forehead.

    They were ordinary last week.
