Appoint another mercenary who wins all before him

208

Brendan Rodgers departure midseason was disrespectful to Celtic and still has the potential to disrupt our ambitions for a domestic treble, but I was surprised at the scale of the hostility towards a man many thought could do no wrong just hours earlier.

The timing of his departure was terrible: a day before a league game at Tynecastle and four days before a Cup game at Easter Road, but I am convinced Brendan chose the moment.  He wanted a crack at Valencia (we had a better chance than the aggregate score suggests) and I suspect told Leicester to wait until after that tie was concluded.

I had already factored in that he had been working his ticket since August last year. The public John McGinn tantrum was not matched by any private confrontation.  Whatever he said to Moussa Dembele, that week was more disruptive and the public comments were clearly about an exit route.

Would you or I have left Celtic midseason for a job at Leicester, or anywhere, for £5m a year?  Chances are many of us would remain, at least until the summer, but the truth is that football players and managers move, irrespective of allegiances.  Jock Stein knocked back the Manchester United job to stay at Celtic, but there will always be only one Jock Stein.  We know this reality, so it should never shock.

The Telegraph tells us Leicester paid Celtic a £9m release fee.  Question is, do we want a new manager who is so successful that he moves for a huge wage in 2022, with millions more coming in in compensation that we ever paid him?  Or, do we want different problems in 2022?

It would be a struggle with another mercenary who won all before him, but we would pull through.  Give me an uncompromising, unconscionable, winner, leave badge-tugging antics for the kids to concern themselves with.

MACJAY1…the whole point is…where and if independent thought exists…you and I are products of our environments…and we can’t but help being influenced by them…we can and do break from this but I believe that this leads to a sort of self doubt/loathing…that manifests itself, especially in football, where the WATP mindset is shown to be an illusion, leading to violence…sorry for the clunky post

    =================================================================================

    ” break from this ”

    I have found the ” breaks ” liberating , sometimes confronting .

The ” breaks ” , in relation to all sorts of issues………social , political and religious .

Educational , never causing self loathing .

    Self doubt . A good thing .

    The WATP……….

Reality is dawning on them as it did with the poor white trailer trash in the deep South late `60s.

I often hear/ see guys talking about lennoxtown football centre and how it under proformances. Thing is lennoxtown football centre is not for academy players it is in The main a centre used for The fulltime professionals at The club. The kids still train at barrowfield in The main.

There is a good youth structure in place and We have combined The school & academy in The last 6 or so years. Bhoys like henderson, johnstone, dembele etc… Are The product of that structure. The academy is a long term product.

We have a good academy but like all others mostof The kids will not make it with us. That is normal. If We can get one first term squad player every 2 years from The academy We will be doing very well.

Right now We have Forrest, calmac, K.T, Ralston, Johnstone and henderson in and around The first team. We have kids like dembele, oxo-flex, atchison and a few more showing real promise. The academy has paid for itself many times over on The pitch and in The bank balance.

Its almost impossible to Plan on your manager walking out or not proforming as youth expect and The same goes for players.

succession Planning would make it easier to forward Plan in The football department but supporters always demand top names, Same with The player situation, supporters always demand money is spent, which often Forrest The club to look outwith Its own ranks.

P.s. Gamboa and toljan were preferred to Ralston and would cost a lot more, but Ralston has shown more.

Half of this blog probably dont froth at the mouth if a certain gentleman (who may or may not have the initials P L) wears a suit or is paid a large salary or gets a big bonus.

  18. Evening all.

With regards to our new permanent manager I’m surprised that no-one has called for Rafa Benitez. I think he would be an excellent choice given all he’s achieved in the game. He has over 20 years experience at the highest level, winning titles at Valencia and Liverpool as well as doing as well at Newcastle as can realistically be expected. At Real Madrid he never stood a chance as the senior players basically never agreed with his appointment in the first place and downed tools within months. He is very astute tactically and knows how to set teams up to carry out a specific game plan. He would surely be an upgrade on Rodgers in terms of competing in Europe and holding our own against the heavyweights. Also, it would be great comedy value for Slippy G to get his arse handed to him by his “best ever gaffer”.

I don’t think he’d be unattainable (he’s not going to get another top 6 job in england at this stage in his career and he’s surely taken Newcastle as far as he can). I honestly think he’d find the Celtic job quite attractive and give us 3-4 years.

If Rafa says no and but we still want someone with vast experience with a proven track record of success and of developing youth then go for Arsene Wenger. Ambitious yes but ask the question at least.

P.S: I love Lenny and am delighted he’s here for the run in but don’t feel he would progress us as a club long term.

  19. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Lurkintim,

Have a look on rt.com, one charged and 13 not charged due to lack of evidence, most likely one of the few Chanel’s that reported it, doubt there’ll be much on uk news until they are looking to stir up.some jingoism.

  20. If the club were to go for the Director of Football model with a “Head Coach” rather than a manager then who would people have in mind?

In all honesty I think the board will make Lenny the gaffer should he win the treble but I think it would be wrong. It would be a bit strange if the decision hung on whether Lenny can win 2 games in the Scottish Cup. If the board search the world over and think Lenny is No.1 candidate then fair enough but it shouldn’t be based on a handful of results against the likes of Aberdeen and Hearts. If Rodgers left in the summer as we all thought he would then I would have guessed that next to no-one would have had Lenny as No.1 choice. I think heart rules head with Lenny but the club need to replace Rodgers with as equally as good a coach in my opinion in order for our young squad to reach their full potential. Also, another marquee managerial appointment would send a strong message to the chasing pack and I think 9 and 10 would be difficult to stop. Another advantage with the likes of Benitez and especially Wenger would be that we’d have an even greater chance of attracting more young french and other European talent.

No groupie. Not unqualified support .

Nor boringly Celtic Trust style perennial condemnation.

  23. Macjay

Not sure why supporting Celtic should lead in any way to supporting the Board (??? in anything they do) but not the Celtic Trust or the Green Brigade?

All are manifestations of Celtic but none of them is Celtic and none deserve adulation per se.

Individual actions by any of the 3 groups can be approved, treated with indifference or deplored.

But now that you have nailed your colours as a Board Supporter, do you fit the charge as someone who adulates the Board?

  24. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

Major distinctions between the Board , the Celtic Trust and the Green Brigade.

It is the duty of the Board to look after the interests of Celtic FC.

It is the duty of the Celtic Trust to look after itself and in doing so , it attempts to impose its political beliefs on Celtic FC . It is arrogant enough to provide spokespeople for the media , as if their views represent those of a majority of Celtic supporters . As a Celtic supporter , they most certainly don`t represent my views and I don`t feel that I am in the minority .

I feel that it has significant influence on the activities of the Green Brigade.

The Green Brigade has no duties and is blindingly irresponsible .

Power without responsibility……..the prerogative of the harlot through the ages.( Stan Baldwin )

Not their fault . Brainwashed . Probably by their elders. Probably in the Celtic Trust.

The single most negative influence on P.R. for Celtic.

What the world needs now is pro I.R.A. songs and Palestinian flags.

Particularly at this time of community insecurity.

Not to mention expensive. BUT they do their wee food drives , so that`s OK .

    You think ?

  26. macjay

It is the duty of the Board to look after the interests of Celtic FC.

To be accurate, that should read “what it perceives to be the interests of Celtic FC”. That may or may not acccord with the wishes of the Celtic family and it is not a democratic institution as it weighs the votes of its major shareholders to trump majority opinion, just as those Trade Union bodies you criticize used to do with the Labour Party.

It is the duty of the Celtic Trust to look after itself

Zat so? Have they articulated this objective anywhere or is this another of those dastardly “reds under the bed” types whose motives are only discernible by you?

and in doing so , it attempts to impose its political beliefs on Celtic FC .

Is attempting to get the Board to be responsive to fans a bad thing of itself? At least the Trust, like the Supporters Association, is not a closed body. Anyone can join (and can attempt to have their viewpoint accepted and presented).

It is arrogant enough to provide spokespeople for the media , as if their views represent those of a majority of Celtic supporters . As a Celtic supporter , they most certainly don`t represent my views and I don`t feel that I am in the minority .

All pressure groups are allowed to present their views to the media in a democracy. They advertise that they are spokespersons for the Celtic Trust, just as the Association speaks for its members. Nothing arrogant about either. A group calling itself Celts for Brexit and British Imperialism could set itself up and speak for itself. But, it would definitely represent a minority view amongst the larger Celtic supporting family- just as you and I do on many occasions. It is not ther size or legitimacy that differentiates them from the Board, it is that they are not a closed shop. Seriously, you could join!- there’s no secret test or initiation procedure.

I feel that it has significant influence on the activities of the Green Brigade.

And you have often stated so and will continue to do so. All without a single shred of evidence. Can’t catch those dastardly behind-the-scenes Svengalis but we know they’re doing it, don’t we?

What you say is interesting . Your point by point replies are erudite as usual .

Most interesting , however is your failure to address the following and most important point.

” What the world needs now is pro I.R.A. songs and Palestinian flags.

Particularly at this time of community insecurity. ”

This may well become a serious ” health and safety ” issue in the light of a significant number of current events of which you will be well aware .

Apart from that far more important aspect , why would we expect a fair go from Scottish refs. who are constantly being serenaded with IRA songs ? Counter productive or what ?
