Are Hearts showing us the way?

1090

What do you think of Hearts putting Save the Children on their shirts?  Perhaps more appropriately, how will Hearts fans feel about their club this morning?  When the next invitation to buy a season ticket, or shop for merchandise email arrives, what’s going to be the instinctive reaction?

Hearts fans are an unpredictable lot, but if this was Celtic, first to grab the headlines on Living Wage, then following up with a charity on the shirt, we would be bursting with pride, or what marketing people call brand affinity.

A football club affinity is a choice.  Most of us were handed our team before we were out of nappies but we still choose the extent of our affinity – to buy the next ticket.  Celtic fans have a notion that we are more of a Movement of people than a typical support – I am only here because I subscribe wholeheartedly to this notion.

For this to make any sense, we need Celtic to be the most ethical football club on the planet.

World leadership sounds ambitious, but the market for ethical football leadership is a bit thin.  Between organised criminals, thuggish bullies, kleptocratic politician-owners, tax cheats, money launderers and what can only be described as disorganised criminals at one particular club, the market is wide open.  This is Celtic’s natural territory.  And it’s profitable!

We buy into what we see as the sentiment behind a football club and if we see Celtic championing ethical wins, we feel connected to the club.

Let’s be clear: Celtic ARE one of the most ethical clubs on the planet.  The Foundation is not the biggest in the world, but it is supported by fans and club alone, not petrodollars looking for a home.  Celtic FC Foundation feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, aide the needy, include the excluded.  They do this in your name and it’s an integral part of the club’s mission.

We are part of the story too.  You and I are part of the Foundation but Celtic fans also evangelise the ethics and standards of our club in our own small ways.  What Celtic fan groups have achieved is staggering.

We have a backstory which any brand in business would kill for.  Formed to feed starving children!  What a story.  It you planned the profile of the most ethical football club in the world you couldn’t dream up a better beginning, a better corporate story, or a better community engagement.  The ingredients are all there.

Hearts fans will WANT to buy into what their club is doing this morning because their club has become ethically aspirational over a short period of time.  Hearts haven’t began to scratch the surface of Celtic’s ethical marks.  We are peerless in UK football – and that’s not an idle boast.

So why am I boring you with all this stuff you know already?  It’s time we started to wear our colours on our sleeve, if not our chests.

‘We are Celtic, born to feed the hungry in 1888, today we not only feed the hungry, we do so much more.  Come and join us.’

Make this our mission.  Commit wholeheartedly, lead with it.  Always.  Every contact I have with the club should remind me why I’m a Celtic fan.  Be confident of its resonance with fans, and all the business objectives we worry about achieving will fall into place.

I have read on other forums that Friday night football has proved quite popular with fans.

The dearth of tickets for tomorrow’s game would suggest some truth in the matter, although the improvement in Celtic’s performances are also a factor.

I think if I was(still) a Glasgow based young fella, I would consider it a perfect start to the weekend.

The war is truly over, they might have the odd run in a cup, flirt with the top flight, maybe even hold a place in the top league (mid table at best) for a while, but they are so hobbled by the fragmentation of income and mismanagement that short of a ‘Roman Abramovich’ type figure coming in to pump countless millions into a black hole never to be seen again, they just don’t matter any more.

I should say …. last time I was at a game (2 years ago) … my brother and I had a hamburger just outside of CP … we both agreed that it unquestionably the worst thing either of us had ever eaten.

Re your snippet from earlier… that would be the natural conclusion if this were any other company. That so many of the shareholders are fans, helps, but there must be a lot of share’s tied up by investors.

Unless Rangers provide a suitable off exchange venue to trade the shares, soon I imagine, then what else can these investors do – given all we know, all that’s in the public domain, it wouldn’t be too extreme to describe this as a con, or a fraud. Mike Ashleigh surely won’t be shy about this.

WH Ireland are probably one of the main off exchange share traders by the way, wonder if they’d take that business…

RWE … re: Andy Murray …. he has the physical tools, but mentally, he plays not to lose … and it translates into his approach on the court …. and having Mauresmo as a coach was a huge mistake …

Lendl was a good choice, for his mental strenght… but, he needs someone to get him off the basline … he will never beat RF, RD, or ND playing from the baseline … he needs someone who can improve his game at the net, or he will never win another major ….

the guy he should have gotten is Edberg …. or Sampras … the same hounddog approach on court …. or even McEnroe … the most natural serve and volleyer ever, and would teach AM a thing or two about taking that negative energy and turning it into a positive ….

With 2 (two) Emphases of Matter statements in every set of audited accounts since inception, no working capital beyond next week, a short history of burning shareholders’ funds at an alarming rate, and a Leadership that inspires considerable doubt as regards good standing, the likelihood of any regulated market permitting the trading of securities in such a company are, let’s be fair, slim.

  15. Hearts should never have been the 1st Scottish club to pay all employees the living wage…. We should have and the fact that we don’t is a disgrace.

    Re shirt sponsorship.

Has anyone EVER bought something because they saw it on a football strip?

I know many who have done the opposite i.e. Change brand away from the sponsor. Maybe the stats say there are Celtic supporters who will buy Magners instead of Srongbow. Does sponsorship ever increase sales to the extent of making it profitable to do so?

Honestly can’t tell you who are the sponsors for ManU, Liverpool, Chelsea, Aresnal or even Real Madrid. Only know the Barca sponsor because someone mentioned it earlier.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve become sponsor and advertiser blind, especially when I watch football.

Now if the Hearts sponsorship realises even one penny more for Save the Children than would otherwise have happened then that is indisputably a good thing (allegedly).

Now, because I know that our sponsors will become New Balance I happened to notice that a number of Aussies used New Balance bats whilst winning the recent ICC World Cup.

But it won’t make me buy New Balance trainers above the Green Flash (ok Nike) that I normally buy. Unless they are actually a better product.

In summary, sponsorship and advertising has zero influence on my choices. In this day and age are there really millions of gullibles who buy because the name is on the shirt. (Excluding sevcos of course)

  19. Stan and Steffan. It’s not necessarily that they want you to buy, though that would be great. It’s all about brand recognition. Gaining a worldwide brand is very valuable.

    ———

I appreciate that, but it’s only valuable if that translates into increased sales and profits.

And I don’t think it necessarily does so. It’s more of a tax minimisation exercise in my opinion. Which the Hearts philanthropists would be within their rights to do.

I’m just very sceptical about the effect of advertising in this day and age. Too many people are switched on to their tactics and can therefore switch off.

For me today marks the day when everything about Rangers died. The belief in entitlement, establishment club has gone.

They have been thrown out the City. They have been liquidated. They have appointed racist, sectarian board members.

The Rangers that my father and grandfather knew have now been exposed as cheats and crooks.

I know of a retired couple, very decent people in Glasgow, lifelong Rangers supporters who took hard earned money out of the bank to buy shares at Ibrox.

Needless to say my text wasn’t addressed by the lamb munching stenographers.
