Attitude for Tynecastle

2311

I watched Hearts batter Pat Fenlon’s Hibs into submission at Easter Road last month.  They are not a good team but they have elbows and commitment, often the key resources in a football game.  With our interest in the League Cup and Europe curtailed, and the league title a sure thing, it is enormously important that we remain in the Scottish Cup into the New Year.

Attitude is the most important attribute for Celtic this weekend.

Things you don’t expect to do when you start blogging: I took four calls from journos yesterday asking if I knew a Celtic fan prepared to go on record as an IRA supporter!  I don’t, for the record, not one, so no one else should bother checking.  Lack of support for that organisation and, where support exists, an awareness that representing yourself as such, is not inconsequential, will explain the dearth.  Just as it’s not inconsequential when you represent your club.  I can’t see many inviting the consequences.

I also got a call yesterday and a faxed copy of a contemporary Celtic View (yes, a fax) from a fan who was beside Jock Stein when he went into the crowd at Annfield that day in 1972.  It was all very cordial, of course, no one argued with Jock.

Jock was at the height of his powers.  Five years from the European Cup win, two from his last final and four months since losing a European Cup semi-final on penalties, he had yet to lose a league as Celtic manager.  His comment in the View, “The Wreckers are chanting about things that have nothing to do with football” was respected, Celtic fans went back to football matters.  But this was 1972.  News from Ireland was despairing.  Rangers fans (and according to newspaper reports, Hearts fans) were chanting “UDA” without censure, Celtic fans eventually retorted.

This is all sooo last century, apart from the consequences, of course.

Sharp focus for Sunday…

With respect, I honestly believe that was one of the worst things Jock ever said.

Why should we have to do that, why not fight for fair and honest referees, would that not be the right thing to do.

    In saying that, a team on the park that beats all in front of them is no a bad idea >}

Where would we play Gauld in our current team?

Which one of Neil’s favourite’s would he leave out?

It’s too tough a decision for Neilly to make, so let’s go with the excuse that we can’t afford him.

    Aye, that’s better.

Yeah mate, I think he would look good on our bench, after 3 games where he failed to score a hat trick in each game . We’d probably then loan him to some Scandanavian mob , balls up the loan contract , and he’d knock us our the 9th CL qualifier that season.

Depends on your marker for success.

Qualifying for ECL the last 2 seasons in a vastly uneven financial playing field has been a success in my books.

Gutted and underwhelmed this season but our margins are tight and our model carries risk and no recipe for guaranteed success.

Modern Celtic fans seem to believe all our bets must come up or the toys get thrown out.

The 1990s left a sobering legacy with me that these are the good times.

I remember Jock saying if they score 4 we score 5!

    Simple.

I canny help feeling after a fantastic season of putting loads of money in the bank we are going backwards…and at a rate.

    Why?

I just can’t get my head round it.

    And young players coming through?

We get so many good reports from ghuys on the blog saying they are Gauld like.

Then they get loaned out to St Mirren or Morton and we never hear of them again.

Now we have the best young footballer in the world, Calvin Miller.

What the f*ck is Lennon going to do with him?

Play him in the first team, like D Utd do with Gauld?

I despair for our young players I really do.

We are out of Europe, the league should be used to give young players a run.

I’d tell Atajic, your in the team for the next 6 games minimum. Make that place your own!

But we’ll get Pukki, then baldie for 11 minutes, then Sammi at centre forward.

I’m seriously pissed off with the management at Celtic right now.

Ghuys on here saying we should support the GB because they are the support of not only now, but the future too.

What about the young players we are praising, they don’t have a future here and that’s a shame.

Something needs to be done to make sure these great young players at the academy get a chance in the first team.

    Or close it down.

In practice it’s very often a romantic notion tho

Or ….do you consider politicians to be principled , scrupulous individuals who fight for what is right

There are some ..IMO …they are the minority

  20. Ryan GAuld, looks to be a cracking player

Andy Robertson, though, is my kind of player (i’m a bit biased as he played with my football club before going to Celtic). He has played four months in SPL and scored four goals. Izzy has played three and a half years and scored two. It would be fair to point out the Izzy is a defender but, given that he isnt a very good defender – positionally terrible at times- and is better going forward, i think goal scoring is a fair point of comparison

if it were me, i would have Andy in my Celtic team over Izzy every day of the week. If i could, i would also have Ryan Gauld, probably at the expense of James Forrest who is now 22 and, from what i see, not improving

Whilst this is unlikely to happen, if it did, how many of the ‘faithful through and through’ supporters would allow the young boys to play and make mistakes whilst they learned? Not enough i would suggest which is one of the reasons young players dont get a game, and when they do they rarely last

    Good post.

Helps to get a little perspective.

However we are where we are.

The dichotomy we face is that

we want to be successful at home and in europe

and yet retain the original Celtic ideal.

Can we achieve both or are they mutually exclusive ?

We need to decide what we want.

  22. Philbhoy

Calvin Miller is only months younger than Ryan Gauld. I would promote Calvin to the first team squad now. If I was Lenny.

  23. McDowellcelt god bless wee oscar on

That’s exactly my point mate. We have potential stars in our youths that are not given the chance to play. They have cleaned up in winning leagues and youth cups playin against teams featuring Gauld. Lennon would rather accomodate Charlie mulgrew in midfield than play one of our youngsters in their natural position. Look at the success that wee runt Barry fergushun had playin for them years ago cos he was given the chance and he was a very limited player. Lennon would rather play and bring in rubbish strikers from Europe that give George, atajic, watt a sustained run of games!

Wile that shower are workin their wag up through the leagues this was the perfect time to blood our youths. We are failing miserably.

totally agree, save the first eleven for the cup, try and win the double. Try a few things out in the league, give some fringe players/boys a run of five or six games on the spin each to see if they have got it, fringe players that don’t show enough punt them in the summer, boys that don’t give them another chance next year.

The only problem is will the boo boys in the support accept not winning every week ??

Your question is different and of course I want more but pragmatism tells me that an over inflated EPL, riches of Europes’ elite and our declining backwater mean my dream of euro progression gets tougher and tougher…

  29. Philbhoy

Spot on re Lenny’s reluctance to play youngsters.

It would be a waste of the club’s time signing Ryan Gauld anyway…….he is far too direct and sad to say wouldn’t fit into Lenny’s crab-like football style.

  30. Like the manager’s heart, mine also sank at the GB banner on Tuesday night. Why?

Because win, lose or draw the banner would be the story. Not the team.

Does this guy Kevin Rooney we’ve heard about on CQN tonight have influence within the GB? If so, it explains a lot. Kevin Rooney is a writer for ‘Spiked online’ which is a ‘libertarian’ discussion forum. Organised around the so-called ‘Institute of Ideas’, Spiked Online has more than a passing resemblance to ‘Living Marxism’ which was the magazine of the very wacko Revolutionary Communist Party.

The RCP/LM/IOI/SO’s calling card is ‘freedom’. Normally couched in psuedo academic jargon (these guys are normally to be found in Unis)

SO specialise in talking really left wing but in reality supporting really right wing things. Its the freedom of the individual to do or say anything they support against ‘the state’ (the democratically elected government to you and me). Its normally right wing nutters that support this kind of stuff.

In recent times SO has got all hot under the collar about laws over child protection, the smoking ban & having to wear seatbelts in the car. Yeah, really important stuff.

Big capitalist organisations like the tobacco companies love the SO. SO pundits get on radio chat shows all the time, usually under their uni hat, speaking left wing but supporting really right wing policies.

They rage against ‘political correctness’ and the ‘nanny state’. Interestingly, they support the ‘right’ for fascists and racists to promote their hatred, in complete disregard to the consequences of course.

I suspect their enthusiasm about opposing the Offensive Behaviour Bill is because they believe more than anything in the individual’s right to be offensive more than any love for Celtic.

While these guys will turn up ‘supporting’ Celtic fans, they’ll also support the ‘right’ of others to sing The Famine Song, the Billy Boys etc. Not as publicly of course, because these songs just aren’t cool, but that’s their politics.

I may be wrong and SO/Kevin Rooney may well have no influence over the GB. It’s the argument ‘it’s not about what they say I support, it’s their right to say it’ that I find weak. Just because you have or should have the right to do something doesn’t mean it’s smart to do it.

The GB have done great things over the years. But every now and again something very politically naive (IMHO) is done with consequences for Celtic as a club and us all as fans in our communities. Big on ‘rights’. Not so big on responsibilities. I just wonder if its the hidden or not so hidden hand of Spiked Online?

Then again, if supporters are infighting then nobody will broach the subject of the £7 million spent on utter mince, with two of them sitting on the bench on Tuesday night, nice work if you can get it i suppose.
