Baird’s Bar, Paul McStay and Anton. Brendan is home

654

If charm brought European success, Brendan Rodgers would have left Celtic Park with the Champions League trophy yesterday. After speaking to the media he sat down with a small number of fans and immediately bound himself to the group by quoting the vernacular of the Celtic Park of his youth.

He spoke about it all. Paul McStay was his favourite all time Celtic player, “when we were in trouble you always looked to Paul to do something”. There was a special place for Anton Rogan, “flying down the wing” but it was Tommy Burns who made the most durable impression on Brendan.

“He went to Mass every morning before training [at Reading]. Family and people were important to him. He told me all about managing Celtic”.

There was a glint in the eye when he recalled stops in Baird’s Bar on trips to Glasgow before heading to Celtic Park, and of recounting his trips for weeks afterwards. The thought crossed my mind that this was a guy who had just picked up keys to kingdom he dreamed of ruling.

There was a short sentence: “I was 39 when I went to Liverpool”. He didn’t need to elaborate. The Liverpool job came when Brendan was still young enough to be play. He’s sure he is a better manager now than then, although he was a pretty impressive manager to be able to land the Liverpool job when he was still a pup.

Several of you have noted that the pickup in season ticket sales will pay the reported multi-million pound salary Brendan will earn. That will pale into insignificance compared to the money his family spent in the Superstore yesterday. They are a very proud family.

He wants his teams to defend aggressively. The responsibility to develop players remains, but he noted that it takes the right experienced players to properly bring on young talent. Oh, and no one needed to tell him the importance of the last week in August.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advert fundraiser, the money is now in and fundraising closed.  The Guardian and Tribune De Geneve have been paid, and the balance will go to Mary’s Meals.

    Thank you.

The story, therefore, is that our billionaire was disappointed in the behaviour of some Sevco Directors (?) so decided to employ Brendan Rogers and supply him with a `warchest` ? Hmmm…..as our host was once wont to say.

Nevertheless, thanks again for the information.

  8. Warbiola sounds like a decent bloke, I saw an interview with him a year or so back and he was enthusing about us and our youth policy, he had something to do with weans down south I think at the time, anyways, imo he was offered the hun job and he really couldn’t turn it down, but I honestly believe that the bigotry and sectarianism has gotten to him, he may well be laying low for a few days and will be back to face Brendan but I reckon deep down he is fecked and Brendan will blow him away, what then for the magic hat, these things have to be considered you know……

  9. See STV is set to debate the ON A after the news tonight. The guy says that Saturday’s events may be proof the Act is necessary.

Don’t get the logic. That Act was in operation on Saturday yet we had flares, prolonged, audible and loud sectarian chants with no visible response from the authorities. There were also televised assaults – again apparently allowed without let or hindrance.

None of this is an endorsement of this flawed legislation.

Warbo will be lucky to get a hat out of a lucky bag when Brendan is finished with him:)

    Better to quit now:)

Yip, if he does get blown away by us and others his stock will fall big time, I don’t think he will take the chance unless they give him players, it will need more than one barton to challenge the sheep or the hartz of the world let alone us.

  14. GARYGILLESPIESHAMSTRING @ 9:28 PM,

More to the point, what was Mark Warburton talking about and WHO does he think he is!?

Gordon Strachan allowed the players from the Scottish Clubs that had qualified for Europe a restbite, if required. Mulgrew decided he’d like to be in the squad…

Now a couple of The Rangers players were included in the provisional squad.

Rather than being pleased about the “Call-up” The Rangers set a diatrabe against Gordon Strachan because he didn’t treat Thee Rangers as a Team that had qualified for Europe.

    Couple of points…

If Thee Rangers hadn’t qualified for Europe, if they had, at that point they would have been treated the same as Aberdeen and Celtic.

Also, many provisional squads change. I’m sure that if Thee Rangers had qualified for Europe that Gordon would have reviewed the situation and if required brought in replacements, the way every National Squad operatez all the time.

As it happens, he does and he doesn’t need tòoo.

He doesn’t because Thee Rangers never qualified for Europe… And as a four year old Club who would have expected them too.

The other factor, was even though they didn’t qualifym Lee Wallace has pulled out any way.

    So Mark Warburton…
