Baird’s Bar, Paul McStay and Anton. Brendan is home

654

If charm brought European success, Brendan Rodgers would have left Celtic Park with the Champions League trophy yesterday. After speaking to the media he sat down with a small number of fans and immediately bound himself to the group by quoting the vernacular of the Celtic Park of his youth.

He spoke about it all. Paul McStay was his favourite all time Celtic player, “when we were in trouble you always looked to Paul to do something”. There was a special place for Anton Rogan, “flying down the wing” but it was Tommy Burns who made the most durable impression on Brendan.

“He went to Mass every morning before training [at Reading]. Family and people were important to him. He told me all about managing Celtic”.

There was a glint in the eye when he recalled stops in Baird’s Bar on trips to Glasgow before heading to Celtic Park, and of recounting his trips for weeks afterwards. The thought crossed my mind that this was a guy who had just picked up keys to kingdom he dreamed of ruling.

There was a short sentence: “I was 39 when I went to Liverpool”. He didn’t need to elaborate. The Liverpool job came when Brendan was still young enough to be play. He’s sure he is a better manager now than then, although he was a pretty impressive manager to be able to land the Liverpool job when he was still a pup.

Several of you have noted that the pickup in season ticket sales will pay the reported multi-million pound salary Brendan will earn. That will pale into insignificance compared to the money his family spent in the Superstore yesterday. They are a very proud family.

He wants his teams to defend aggressively. The responsibility to develop players remains, but he noted that it takes the right experienced players to properly bring on young talent. Oh, and no one needed to tell him the importance of the last week in August.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advert fundraiser, the money is now in and fundraising closed.  The Guardian and Tribune De Geneve have been paid, and the balance will go to Mary’s Meals.

  1. Reading coach Chris Davies will soon complete his switch to Celtic.

New Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers is desperate to link up with Davies again having worked with him at both Swansea and Liverpool.

Discussions between the clubs have been taking place during the past two days as they look to thrash out a compensation package for Royals’ first-team coach

Apart from the obvious answer that rules dont appear to apply to any club playing out of the Bigot Dome , surely there must be some sort of rule/regulation governing how / where money used in football clubs comes from etc .

Anyone give an explanation other than the one above ?

Dermot must be beelin, it’s costing him a right few bob to bring in BR and his team, give him a decent spend, get shot of RD and his team, unless the club are going to go into debt, which I can’t see them doing, it will be underwritten by DD.

The folly of upsetting a billionair and they are doing the same to another billionair as well, he must get lucky one of these days.

I don’t think there is, the likes of Abramovic and the like haven’t made their cash by being 100% above board and nobody questions them.

Where would you find one of those ??? :-)

  10. I don’t think they can keep up with us financially, by a mile, any time soon.

Once we got our stadium capacity up to a 10,000 advantage we should have been ahead of the old club. But, what we didn’t realise till later was their cheating with player wages, and especially being bankrolled by DM’s pals in Edinburgh.

This new lot do not have that advantage. They can’t get an overdraft to tide things through in the lean parts of the season. Relying on ‘soft’ loans from friends can’t last forever, probably they have reached their peak now. Wait until they have to get loans from the loan shark institutions. It will hurt. (And they still owe those ‘soft’ loans, it’s a debt on the books.

Then there is the retail deal, which is about to go into flux it seems. But as it is, Celtic earn a huge amount more than they do.

For all his faults Peter Lawwell has brought some handsome sponsorship deals to our club, deals King could only dream of.

Then there is the stadia. According to many reports Ibrox is a mess, needs serious money spent on it. Whereas Celtic Park is kept in good nick, improved as we go along, even although some posters on here would like to the South Stand improved. Personally I wold demolish it and complete the stadium as a bowl.

Euro money, prize money, etc, If we keep outspending them, buying better players and managers we will continue to be the biggest and most successful club in Scotland.

They don’t have a chance. God help the rest but I like to see them get a cup now and again. Just let us will a treble every fifth year. MIB apart!

    FGF,

There are rules, but, unfortunately the SFA don’t apply them.

They are called the Financial Fair Play rules, which, amongst other things, says that clubs have to be financed by football related methods; I.e, income derived through tickets, sponsorship, etc.

They are meant to guard against the scenario of some one turning up with a bag of unaccountable cash, which could be the proceeds of crime or, Heaven forfend, a money laundering exercise.

Scottish football is, at present, not clean enough to incorporate these rules.

No everything has been pushed back one week to fit in with the timings of the four Res 12 Bhoys.

As Paul mentioned in his blog, the funding is now complete with very expensive ads in The a Guardian next Wednesday and the following Saturday and an ad in the Tribune de Geneve next Wednesday.

Counter measures by the truth deniers well underway. Stories to tell about the Scottish press on this one but will sit on it for moment.

Celtic Rollercoaster is auditing the funds and will report back to the blog when it’s all happened.

There will be a decent balance going to help fund the next CQN School Kitchen in Malawi.

Just asked Mrs Green Man to give a few swift kicks in the nether regions, to get my brain going.

    Never worked….but it was sore:)

Think i will get an anti-sevco petition together, to ban them from Scoddland forever.

Send it to DD, with an attached note….Dermot, Green Man here, that sevco mob said you are skint:)

    Go get them:)

  21. Chris Davies is in his early 30’s but has worked with BR before so he must rate him. I see from Wiki he spent some time coaching in New Zealand under Bobby and Jonny Gould…

Hope we get an old enforcer in to the coaching team too.

  22. I thought Barton sounded articulate and actually quite a likeable football guy on talk sport tonight. Obviously given an easy ride on there by the presenters but I reckon he is a good signing for them.
