Balde and an incredibly significant Celtic fan

327

This is the way to start the season.  A competitive match, albeit one which is no longer puts us in direct jeopardy, to open what will be a lush green Celtic Park for the first game of the season.  Neil Lennon will correctly press his team hard tonight, Elfsborg are reportedly the fittest team in Sweden and are only a week away.  That prospect, is enough to get the blood pumping.

Kris Commons and Georgios Samaras took the plaudits in Belfast last week, just as they did in the European qualifiers last season.  They are players who can be relied upon to deliver for the team, but it’s the new guys who always attract the most attention in front of the Celtic Park crowd, and tonight, that is likely to mean Amido Balde.

I’m not going to waste your time listing the considerable number of great Celtic players who have taken more than a few games to settle into life at the club.  If we see him tonight give him your support.  There will be plenty time to judge next month.

I’m delighted to hear John Keane has been asked to unfurl the league flag this season.  John was one of the ‘rebels’ who stepped in when the old board collapsed but few in the Celtic support know him, he declined to be photographed on the steps with the others.  In many respects he was merely one of the many Celtic supporters who stepped forward when we needed them, but in one respect, John did a whole lot more.

In 1994 the Bank of Scotland informed Celtic that they had to bring their account back under the agreed overdraft limit that same day, or the bank would call-in the overdraft and appoint an administrator.  We’re not talking Duff and Phelps-type administration either, the bank’s men would have shredded the playing staff in an immediate attempt to bring costs in line with income.

The old board had no money but John Keane stepped forward.  Without any security from Celtic, or from the Bank of Scotland, he paid £1m of his own money into Celtic’s account, bringing the account back inside agreed terms.  The bank could still have called in the overdraft and John would have lost his money.  We covered it here last year, when aghast at the lack of anyone stepping forward elsewhere.

Within hours Fergus was on his way to Scotland and in the days which followed the old board agreed to sell their shares (with the worthy exception of Kevin Kelly, who told Fergus he could rely on the support of his shares without needing to pay for them).

John has attended board meetings and AGMs for the last 19 years; I can think of no better hand on the tiller.  In future, when our history is written, he’ll have a page to himself.  Unfurling the flag will be a proud moment for one of the most significant fans in our history.

here’s another, only available in vinyl and never heard in the jungle

In the hall of fame of the football game,

There’s a name that stands alone.

It’s a Glasgow team and it reigns supreme,

Where the game of football’s known.

For they’re good men all, when they’re on the ball,

And we know they don’t take long.

And the others fear, when they hear us cheer.

As we sing the Celtic song.

C-E-L-T-I-C Celtic,, see me I see Celtic on the ball.

Each man ready, true and steady,

They will stand when all the others fall.

Shouting proud like, shouting all aloud like,

Shouting in the crowd like anywhere at all.

C-E-L-T-I-C I see Celtic, I see Celtic, Celtic on the ball.

When the week’s works done and the game’s begun,

And as one we cheer the bhoys,

To a victory that we hope to see then you’ll hear a brave new noise.

It begins so low, then it starts to grow

Till it shakes the football ground

Then the cheer rings out, with a mighty shout,

    To a certain Celtic sound.

C-E-L-T-I-C Celtic,, see me I see Celtic on the ball.

Each man ready, true and steady,

They will stand when all the others fall.

Shouting proud like, shouting all aloud like,

Shouting in the crowd like anywhere at all.

C-E-L-T-I-C I see Celtic, I see Celtic, Celtic on the ball.

To the football world, there’s a challenge hurled,

And it say come one, come all.

For we watch with pride as the Celtic side,

Has the answer to the call.

If the game is rough, then the bhoys are tough.

But they always play it clean.

For the game’s the thing and the song we ring,

Is a song of white and green.

C-E-L-T-I-C Celtic,, see me I see Celtic on the ball.

Each man ready, true and steady,

They will stand when all the others fall.

Shouting proud like, shouting all aloud like,

Shouting in the crowd like anywhere at all.

C-E-L-T-I-C I see Celtic, I see Celtic, Celtic on the ball.

An immense contribution from John Keane, at a point when the Bank of Scotland decided its’ role was to be the (we are the) peoples bank. We are still here, the Bank of Scotland are no more. God bless Fergus McCann!

I hope Gary Hooper plays tonight and scores a few goals. I am clutching at straws here, but am I alone in thinking that if Roy Hodgkins were to pick Hoops for the Scotland game whilst he is still wearing the Hoops, Gary might just see more of his future at Celtic?

Your post about the need to worship was interesting but I feel you have missed the point re Keevins.

Of course we should deplore bad behaviour by any Celtic fans but before so doing, we should know that such behaviour actually occurred. Keevins` use of the word “apparently” very strongly suggests that he is basing his point on hearsay. That is not fair and, as you know, “Ye must be fair,lad..”. 0:-)

    JJ

  6. Kojo,

What are you talking about ?

Keevins was referring to songs, songs he has no reliable source to confirm were actually sung, neither do you.

You haverin about flares when they are not mentioned, simply shows you are simply looking for a stick to beat the support.

Stick to the subject please scattergun approach will always get somebody and if your that keen to lambast the Celtic support maybe you should get a job with Maria house like keevins.

  10. parkheadcumsalford Not disagreeing re John Keane/Fergus McCann and putting cash in, what I was posting was IMO that Brian Dempsey was getting a bit of unnecessary stick and as explained I find the man to be a fine Celtic man who if not by having funds to buy the club he certainly played a part in the whole change that came about. Again IMO.

Oooooofttt…..Hey bhoys, I think we’re going a bit over the top here with eulogising Archie McPherson. Does nobody else recall him being one of the more prominent forecasters of Armageddon? He couldn’t imagine the SPL without oldco.

He did write a great book, “Mr Stein”, and he was a personal friend of Big Jock, but he was /is a hun at the end of the day. His commentaries weren’t all that great either.

He was the headmaster of Swinton Primary School in Baillieston when I was a wee boy, circa 1960.

I will grant you that he was better than today’s commentators, but that’s not a big accolade.

  18. Kojo. Old bean how ayah. Got to disagree with you here but where or who on this blog gave eyewitness to the alleged behaviour that sneevins alluded to. All reports that I have read praised the Celtic fans this includes Brentfords chairman. The only people who have tried to make bad press appear to be the SMSM and the orcs on their tweets and sites. I know several people who attended the game and said it was a carnival atmospher and both sets of fans got along just pinkety. An educated fellah like you Kojo should know never to trust what you here or read in the SMSM.
