    The green white and how did that happen gold corporation bus dropped us at Beardmores via Shettleston then Parkhead for Celtic at home, once an iron foundry that helped mother Glasgow and the United Kingdom repel the other forces of darkness. An industrial Glasgow that gave birth to some lions, later of some Lisbon fame.

     

     

     

    We used to walk up Duke St to Parkhead Cross in an age where you didn’t wear a jacket 10 months of the year, out-with sheer Glaswegian balticy conditions, it was a green Celtic knitted woollen garment dark bottle variation sometimes with gold hoops on the sleeve, or in summer with college neck’s of V? A Billy Connolly friction at the barbers, wrangler jeans, segs in your shoes, green and white ‘walk on’ scarf, and we were good to go.

     

     

     

    One of the guys I went with moved down sarf’ escaping nae jaiket winters, but him and his boy still support Celtic, he’s Celtic crazy, born 400 miles away from Parkhead and is his fathers image. When we went on a Saturday, Parkhead was one step from the city biz, but had its own community thoroughfare. It was as good and better than London town, earthy and alive, and where you went to see the Celtic by birthright from every street in Glasgow.

     

     

     

    Just another Celtic Saturday and always, always a Saturday up to Parkhead we passed there were women in a steady queue always, for that afternoon’s Granada experience all praying for a wee win, “ Look at that ” every week my down sarf mate would say ‘ bigger crowd at the bingo ’ he predicted. Arriving early on a Saturday by Janefield street he sometimes wasn’t far wrong. We’d progressed to the Jungle by that age, underneath the panoramic wee podium that housed Arthur or Archie in their second home, blasting a commentary that was fair, but bland.

     

     

     

    Sheep we were, all Tims because you did what your big brother did, and got yourself along to paradise to see that team they call the Celtic, there was no such thing as herd immunity back then, it was Parkhead for you my bhoy . Pick your spot, any spot 18,000 proclaimed the Evening Times, only on a good day, for the visit of real sheep the crowd went up. If it was verse the old Rangers, all bets were off, normal arrangements were abandoned it wasn’t a match day experience, travel was restricted and public transport was avoided.

     

     

     

    If ‘the cameras’ were there it was a weekend changing experience, fair made the day with the thrill of knowing you’d seen your team, win lose or draw and would see them again on television that same night, from the jungle you knew your voice was among one of the bhoys. Had there been a a Christmas without a Celtic present, it wasn’t Christmas at all.

    Beautifully composed. An excellent essay on the experiences of Celtic supporters in late 50s/early 60s and into late 60s. Having attended 3 games as a 7 year old in early 1959, my real Celtic supporting life started in 1965/66 when a crowd of my pals from St. Pat’s in Coatbridge would congregate behind the goal, midway up the terracing in the Celtic End. There would be between 15-25 of us at most games and we would sing our heads off and cheer the team on for 90 minutes. We knew we were watching something special developing.

     

     

    A few years later we graduated to The Jungle amongst the true Cognoscenti and we learned from older, more experienced Tims what it meant to support the team and to become a real Celtic supporter.

     

     

    Great days indeed. One thing though that always annoyed me as a Celtic supporter in the early 60s. Our scarves were always a dark bottle green and when you looked at a terracing full of heaving, swaying Celtic supporters it always seemed dark and not remotely resembling the riot of colour that we know so well today. The other lot’s terracing always seemed brighter for some reason and I always wondered if this was a deliberate strategy by the scarf manufacturers. Bottle green was not the colour of those beautiful emerald hoops on our jerseys. It was as if they didn’t want us to be seen, to not participate as part of the spectacle. I loved it when the green and white barred scarves started to appear (often knitted by mothers and aunties) and we seemed to shine brighter with every season that passed.

     

     

    For the last 40 years or so I’ve had a season ticket in the Main Stand and I’ve come a long way from those early days of going to see “The Celtic”. I’ve enjoyed the trip through those years and witnessed some wonderful teams and individuals wearing those beloved hoops as well as some great opponents especially on European nights. I’ve seen the Lisbon Lions, the Quality Street Kids, McStay, Nicholas, Burns, Larson et al. The greatest performance I have seen by an opponent at Celtic Park was AC Milan’s Gianni Rivera in 1969. He just about broke my heart.

     

     

    During those years the club has grown and we have seen remarkable change, and for the better. Nowadays people are more sophisticated and demanding than they were back then. I well remember a game back in the day when the back of my legs became drenched in warm urine. We’ve come a long way since then and we need to constantly demand and embrace change for the better. Fergus gave us a great stadium to enjoy our football and it has helped us become world famous. A favourite venue for some of the greatest players throughout the ages.

     

    I love my safe, comfortable seat but I think the stand in which it is located needs to be upgraded – not because I feel entitled but because Celtic Football Club needs to keep evolving and rising to the challenges that it’s faced with.

    Ah the Vaults — throwaway line regarding those in the support that would rather drink in their P/head local that support any new facilities the club would build.

     

     

    Strange — but …

     

     

    The Springfield Vaults twinned with Cock Tavern in Euston.

     

    The kind of places where you will never catch salmonella because the botulism has eaten it.

     

     

    I have memories of someone putting up plans for the area around Turnstiles.

     

    Seemed to be pushing an “edgy” arts venue like SWG3.

     

    Looked like a drinking barn to me.

     

     

    If the Vaults goes then history will be lost.

     

    However the place is just Glesga public house capitalism in the raw.

    Although we Lost overall, the 5-4 game was absolutely Mad but the maist amazing game of Fitba I huv witnessed. Partizan were Lucky that night but I was still Happy with my team.

     

     

    I Hope you are Well.

     

     

    I’m very excited about what Celtic might dae this Season. My Da is in Hospital waiting for a home place.

    MADMITCH The vaults looking at it yesterday I’m afraid it’s on its last legs,the owner like other pub and shop owners were offered grants when that area was redeveloped,the owner of Vaults seemly got to greedy which resulted in him not getting a grant,he is paying the price now ,

     

     

    Absolute bollox, tge owner of the Springfield Vaults is a very good friend of mine,the building was proposed for a compulsory purchase order, when the Commonwealth Village was being developed, with an Ibis Hotel on tge opposite side,which is still derelict BTW, the owner is one of the shrewdest business men i have ever met,and one of the most generous as well.

    His health he says is failing and he spends a lot of time tipping bout the garden.Didnt stop him suggesting coming thro to meet some bhoys but I know nothing def has been arranged yet.

    Indeed, the dark bottle green was superseded by the colourful riot of the ‘walk on’ scarf and proper Hoops green, it also took over the Kop at Anfield , or the Jungle in Parkhead.

     

     

    Black as the third Celtic colour doesn’t sit well with me either, I like the new away kit, sadly my body shape not seen since the like of Wayne Biggins won’t allow me to flaunt it.

     

     

    P.s. I’ve actually seen the ‘blueprint’ presented to Fergus McCann which included the redevelopment of the Main Stand, the biggest on record most successful single shareholders issue which ours was, couldn’t have built it. The wee guy including our Hampden season, said no.

     

     

    Here we are today, a long way from Billy Connolly and the big guy that shouted Boaaaabbbbyyy Evaaaaannnnnsssss from where you and I stood

    I suppose sometimes you just have to accept the reality of the situation then. I bet the blueprints would have been spectacular. With my luck they’ll probably break ground on the new main stand the day after I shuffle off this mortal coil – as they say. 😂

    Cambhoy- Mogan is a beautiful wee spot with a nice marina,a lot of Germans settled there after the war…..might need a bus into Puerto Rico shopping centre…..but a chance you might get somewhere local

    Pretty good performance , four good goals but my word we don’t half give away possession too

     

    Easily , And don’t half miss some great chances , hopefully it will all come together but we still need some more quality and please we’ve enough small players , time Our scouts started identifying bigger units for defence and midfield .

    That’s odd. I can get Hesgoal on the Ipad, but generally pull it up on an old laptop, with nothing else on it, ( reasons below ) and connect to a large screen TV with a HDMI cable.

     

     

    I use Norton anti malware as Hesgoal attracts malicious attacks. The number repelled in 90 minutes is quite extraordinary. It also attracts ads from an amazing number of ladies who are apparently desperate to make my acquaintance.

     

     

    Today was first class, as the source was a very professional feed from Ostrava’s TV network,

     

    accompanied by a trackside reporter with very attractive assets, which was a considerable upgrade on McCullough!
