Beaten and bruised but strategy is all that matters

758

Back in the 80s I had a soft spot for Porto.  Their 2-1 1987 European Cup final win over Bayern Munich, coming from behind in the last 15 minutes and scoring with a back-heel, against a vastly better resourced opponent, was something Celtic fans could relate to.

A decade later I followed Porto’s tribulations as they tried to recapture those heights in the Champions League with a new team.  They remained an engaging team but when it came to the big clubs there was always one who would wipe the floor with them.  Manchester United scored four without reply in the 1997 quarter finals.  The following season Real Madrid hit six over two games without conceding as Porto exited at the group stage.

It was a group stage exit the next season, before Bayern Munich took them in the 2000 quarter final.  Then what looked like a significant reversal as they failed to qualify for Europe’s top tournament, settling for Uefa Cup football instead in season 2000-01.  They eliminated Celtic from the group stage in 2001-02 but were taken home and away by Real Madrid in the last sixteen.

All this time they were fine-tuning player development and recruitment strategy; buying marginally better players and selling for ever-increasing money.   Real Madrid may have wiped the floor with them but Porto’s business model was fine-tuned by 2002.  Real won their last European trophy that season but the gap with Porto was closed in an instant.

Celtic are less than two years into their current strategy and we’re miles ahead of where we should be.  It will be extremely difficult to match this season’s on-field achievements next season, but the stage you exit the Champions League is only one yardstick available.  It took Porto years of slow and meandering progress to learn what it took to reach the highest level.  This is our task.

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

Is being in Liquidation the same as been Liquidated?

If there is a difference, does it mean that , technically, they are still alive?

BDO haven’t produced anything, so,I assume the L process hasn’t been completed.

Any clarification will be most welcome.

  2. On another note. How good was victor Wanyama the other night? Immense. Every inch the modern midfielder, poise, strength, presence, guile. In there bossing the place (at that level against that opposition it was actually quite hard to believe) and making it his own. I just thought he was colossal. Distribution was good, positioning was good, and his athleticism and his stature are second to none. And all at the age? What 20? 21? It’s just…..I don’t know mibbies if I had stuck in at school, instead of arguing about kola kubes, I might be able to describe him better…..ye jist hud tae be there….

A bidding war would be nice. We have a few assets I would like top dollar for. I think the performance caught the peoples eyes down south more than the result on Tuesday. We played a mature game but just had a few sloppy moments. Certainly had a much better CL campaign than Chelski and Man Citeh tho.

  6. I see the Dead Clubs Share Price has slipped under the 80p mark today, last trade 79.5. Opened at 76p rose quickly to 93p before going into a gradual decline.

  7. From Wiggy Smith article on BBC website comments section:

“Smith weaves his words well but doesn’t shed much light on the bald facts and his opinions seem artificial. Clubs like Barnet have shown that once you start to recede its hard to paper over the cracks. Smith was a huge scalp for Rangers at one time but the circumstances of his parting are shrouded in mystery. Basically he should never light a fag off the gas ring.”

I thought Victor Wanyama was very good.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport thought so too . They made him Celtic’s MOTM.

“What do you think of the horsemeat scandal, Mr Smith?”

“Oh, yes, horsemeat – the Gers will be back soon, stronger than before.”

    Oh that’ll be the oldco,

Well there you go then, it has to be a newco playing in div 3 !

I don’t get how they can claim to be the same club, more so when they disown previous debt,

Brass neck absolutely, maybe even titanium.

  16. Phil is just saying that the Nimmo verdict is imminent, another Tweeter asked him if he had any indication of the verdict and he said No.

Liquidation is the process in which court appointed liquidators try to get as much money as possible for the creditors. This can be done in a variety of ways from the simple of selling any assets (can’t happen in this case as all done before this process commenced) to more complicated means of suing directors for breaches of duty to the company.

Farepak have been in liquidation for 4 or 5 years now and liquidators have recovered money from the bank and from directors.

Once all the money that can possibly be found has been distributed to creditors, the liquidators will apply to the courts to get the company dissolved. This is the final process and removes the company from Companies House and is finally dead.

I don’t expect this liquidation process to be finished any time soon. The liquidators have a duty to go through everything with a fine tooth comb and may also look at the asset sale to see if it could be considered as a gratuitous alienation, i.e. bought on the cheap.
