Berlin to Lisbon

829

A game against Union Berlin, from the second tier of German football, four days before our Champions League qualification campaign gets underway sounds like perfect preparation.  Union will be better than any opposition we have or will play since defeat in Turin last month and they will be miles ahead of our Champions League second qualifying round opponents.

Having to play six instead of last season’s four games to qualify for the group stage has cost Celtic ‘lucrative’ preseason friendlies.  I am sure those charged with the task of balancing the books at Celtic Park (we always pay our bills) will be less than entertained by this, and for many supporters, if feels important that we face Real Madrid or Inter Milan preseason, but the summer time is all about qualifying for the Champions League.  There are five weeks between Celtic’s opening qualifying game and the first leg of the play-off round.  This extra preparation time should ensure we are fitter and ready.

Legend has it that competitive football in July inevitably leads to a drop in form late in the season but legends are not always reliable.  Last year Basel entered Champions League qualification at the same stage Celtic will next season, and next week they become the first Swiss team to play competitive European football in May ever.  Apoel Nicosia entered at the same stage in 2011 and became Cyprus’ first qualifier for the Champions League quarter final last year.

The Champions League final of 2014 will be held in Lisbon, the first time the city has hosted Europe’s top game since………. you know when.  There are 1730 miles between Berlin and Lisbon, or 10 months, if you prefer.  Preparations are already underway.

  1. Alas they will be back in one form or another.

The loss of the stadium would mean they’d have to wait a generation to challenge again. Even if they comes up with the money for a new one, I reckon I could single-handedly tie them up in the planning process for at least that length of time.

My money is still on ” … Ibrox belongs to the Creditors.”

Remember Doncaster said there was no mechanism to relegate a team from the SPL other than finishing last? So how could Sevco be relegated?

  3. They couldn’t have been relegated as they weren’t in the league in the first instance, not only were they not in the league, they were not in existence.

Doncasters would be as well trying to find moonbeams over Govan than hoping to sell that belief.

  4. 4 or more goals – 4/5. So that’ll be another 80p potentially coming Jobo’s way…

  5. If we ever play that Sevco mob again, can we put a metal fence up in the tunnel like Madrid to make them keep their distance?

I see they are all copying the Bhoys’ ‘display’ now …… Even Real’s is not a patch on ours..LOL……This is going to be SOME game……my prediction,…Real …OUT …Barca …..IN and they will win final….

  8. It would appear that Celtic have made a bit of a mess of allocating tickets for the CF.

Certainly makes more sense than playing in Miami in the middle of the summer. And for those who have never been to the restored Capital, Berlin is well worth the trip. And with three ties to be negotiated this time around Celtic can still draw some big crowds for the home games. Off to see if Mourinho can overcome Dortmund and head for Wembley, odds against it but there have been some big scoring games lately so never know.

  10. Ntas,

Don’t know who you expect to fool with that. But I expect in your usual sleekit style you expect the differences between my abilities and those of SFTB to take priority over reprimands of yourself. SFTB is 100+ times the poster I wish I could be.

Your contributions would be decent if you could keep that mask on.

  11. The oul sevco are fair dragging out this investigation, its gone on so long j thought duff and phelps were leading on it.

Don’t think Dortmond have arrived yet …..!!!!

  15. Sait Stivs – Lewandowski is a real wildcard, anything can happen with him in their team.

Similar to Ronaldo. I can’t work out if Higuain is a waste of a shirt or he simply appears diminished in Ronaldo’s shadow.

  16. does anyone have real stories of what happened last night, rather than hearsay and hyperbole from the MSM.

I witnessed a gathering of zombies in Gilmour st juat after 5. not bevvied, young ish, but obviously planning trouble, i didnt notice the black hoody uniform till i saw other pics on line,

Dortmund settling down now …..really exciting game….!!!!!!!!

  18. Never rated Howard Webb since he made a right pigs ear out of the world cup final. He’s a ref who makes a point of looking steely, determined and assured, thus people are easily convinced he knows what he’s doing.

  19. !!Bada Bing!! on

HT-Mate was at TO today ,mostly complaints for various reasons, couldn’t even get prices of tickets right on the letter.

  20. Great game so far! Shame about the deficit. Too evenly matched for RM to come back. Boo hoo :)) If Roben plays tomorrow, Barca will get through. Check the bookies, short odds will confirm that :))

From what little research I have done thus far I would say so. How can people that have been to less games including not being at any Semi-Finals get offered a Final Ticket before those that have been to more games or same number of games including both Semis?

I actually know people that have got offered Tickets before those that have been to more games.

If anybody has the name of the Director in charge of Ticket Sales including e-mail kindly send it to me lennybhoycfc@gmail.com I had cause to do this six years ago, the result was the then Director looked into this and agreed with me, resulting in me being given tickets for ipox of all places. I named shamed those that were offered tickets before me and they are mates

I or anybody else has no God given right to a ticket but when those less deserving get one before those that have attended more games, I have an issue. It will be easy for anybody within the Club to check the ticket history uptake of those that have been offered tickets for the Final.

As I say, those that have been to as many games as the other person or more than, congratulations on getting your Letters. To those that haven’t, I bear no grudge against you and hope you have a great day out. I do though hold the Club accountable for offering tickets to those who have not been to sufficient games.
