Berlin to Lisbon

829

A game against Union Berlin, from the second tier of German football, four days before our Champions League qualification campaign gets underway sounds like perfect preparation.  Union will be better than any opposition we have or will play since defeat in Turin last month and they will be miles ahead of our Champions League second qualifying round opponents.

Having to play six instead of last season’s four games to qualify for the group stage has cost Celtic ‘lucrative’ preseason friendlies.  I am sure those charged with the task of balancing the books at Celtic Park (we always pay our bills) will be less than entertained by this, and for many supporters, if feels important that we face Real Madrid or Inter Milan preseason, but the summer time is all about qualifying for the Champions League.  There are five weeks between Celtic’s opening qualifying game and the first leg of the play-off round.  This extra preparation time should ensure we are fitter and ready.

Legend has it that competitive football in July inevitably leads to a drop in form late in the season but legends are not always reliable.  Last year Basel entered Champions League qualification at the same stage Celtic will next season, and next week they become the first Swiss team to play competitive European football in May ever.  Apoel Nicosia entered at the same stage in 2011 and became Cyprus’ first qualifier for the Champions League quarter final last year.

The Champions League final of 2014 will be held in Lisbon, the first time the city has hosted Europe’s top game since………. you know when.  There are 1730 miles between Berlin and Lisbon, or 10 months, if you prefer.  Preparations are already underway.

Tickets for away games is something we consistently get wrong

My first gripe is with the SFA , if you are a Hibs Fan, there are 3 tickets available per ST

If you are a Celtic fan , there is less than half a ticket per ST holder.

How many other industries turn away their regular customers when a big event comes around ? Very few, as they would quickly be facing the L word.

Celtic need to show more spine in their dealings with SFA , and ensure our fans don’t get the raw deal they currently do – how about withdrawing players from Scotland games, or refusing to sell tickets.

My second gripe is with executive members. I have no problem with the guys who are there long term, or those who trade up, or even trade down to a regular seat.

But, as a ST holder for 24 years, I do object to some flash git / glory hunter who has executive tickets for a couple of years & gets access to all away matches. Simple economics shows that my £600 ST at today’s rates for 24 years, is a whole lot more than 2 years executive.

    Rant over :)

  3. If Xavi Alonso’s name is pronounced Jabby…….how should our friend smashingmilkbottles name be pronounced? His name is Xovi Nickas

  4. I wish I had a ticket so that I could give it away, I went to both semi games last year but not this time, I won’t be back.

I won’t be feeding the corrupt sfa another penny.

I hope this is not a ruse by the club, to start a points system next season, when the bars etc could be open ,to be more eligible for Final tickets.Surely these days it is very easy to see who is taking tickets from the club.

I was fortunate to get one through the Club, through my own Brownie points. As I said I don’t have a God given right but when I know of people who don’t have as many Brownie points as me, it sickens me.

Always have that feeling though, was the only time I acted on it…. my wee mate was working in Madrid at the time, phoned and asked ye want one, and the rest is, if ye know yer history…

I received a letter from Celtic

Weare pleased to offer you one ticket for this match……..

When I attempt to purchase online I get the following

    WE’RE SORRY!

Unfortunately, this time you don’t have the correct privileges on your account to purchase tickets for this match. Why not return to ticket home and try another match?

Wee Franny better be making sure the members of his own bus are sorted first or he’ll be getting his Sandy Shaw’s booted ;-)

  17. I have been a season ticket for 16 years. In that time I have been on the away ticket scheme.

I have regularly attended home league matches, but have seldom been offered away tickets- the odd semi or final. Only one game at the death star.

This season a combination of family and work circumstances has meant my attendance has fallen away.

I haven’t been to any cup games.

Imagine my surprise when I was offered a ticket for the final. I wonder if Celtic regard me as a ” wavering” season ticket holder and have identified me as worth enticing back with a cup final ticket?

  18. Italiabhoy

Celtic have ‘offered’ tickets for away games for several seasons.
