Berlin to Lisbon

829

A game against Union Berlin, from the second tier of German football, four days before our Champions League qualification campaign gets underway sounds like perfect preparation.  Union will be better than any opposition we have or will play since defeat in Turin last month and they will be miles ahead of our Champions League second qualifying round opponents.

Having to play six instead of last season’s four games to qualify for the group stage has cost Celtic ‘lucrative’ preseason friendlies.  I am sure those charged with the task of balancing the books at Celtic Park (we always pay our bills) will be less than entertained by this, and for many supporters, if feels important that we face Real Madrid or Inter Milan preseason, but the summer time is all about qualifying for the Champions League.  There are five weeks between Celtic’s opening qualifying game and the first leg of the play-off round.  This extra preparation time should ensure we are fitter and ready.

Legend has it that competitive football in July inevitably leads to a drop in form late in the season but legends are not always reliable.  Last year Basel entered Champions League qualification at the same stage Celtic will next season, and next week they become the first Swiss team to play competitive European football in May ever.  Apoel Nicosia entered at the same stage in 2011 and became Cyprus’ first qualifier for the Champions League quarter final last year.

The Champions League final of 2014 will be held in Lisbon, the first time the city has hosted Europe’s top game since………. you know when.  There are 1730 miles between Berlin and Lisbon, or 10 months, if you prefer.  Preparations are already underway.

  1. dessybhoy et al,

I have ranted on here before about Seville. I had fulfilled all the critieria and then I still didn’t get one because a lot of people and their wives who never attend games knew someone who knew someone who got them tickets. (I actually got one from UEFA but I never saw my seat because there were guys everywhere including the stairs; a guy shared his with me…..)

Another example that backs up my claims. If I were to draw the Director for ticket sales to the last three pages of this thread I would have enough to convince them. I’m convinced that somebody needs their Sandy Shaws booted (copyright Hamiltontim).

Re tickets. Did Ticketmaster not get job of looking after ticketing a few years ago, or is it in house again?

    Night Celts.

  9. On another subject but a similar vein. I bought ten shares in Celtic, the original share issue £660….. never once did I ever get any preference over anyone for anything, which I’m sure was supposed to happen… not that I was looking for it.

I have been a season ticket for 16 years. In that time I have been on the away ticket scheme.

I have regularly attended home league matches, but have seldom been offered away tickets- the odd semi or final. Only one game at the death star.

This season a combination of family and work circumstances has meant my attendance has fallen away.

I haven’t been to any cup games.

Imagine my surprise when I was offered a ticket for the final. I wonder if Celtic regard me as a ” wavering” season ticket holder and have identified me as worth enticing back with a cup final ticket?

I think you’re giving them too much credit mate! I’d be surprised if they had the MI to allow them to identify “waverers”.

BTW – what flavour of ice-cream are you having with your waver? :-)

  11. I’ve got a ticket for the CF through the ballot.

At first I felt a bit guilty after reading some of the posts tonight. It does feel a bit like a lottery.

However, I remember being at three Cup games this season at CP where the attendances were very low – Communities Cup v Raith Rovers in Sept and St.Johnstone in October and the Scottish Cup game against Arbroath in December. This is on top of cup semis and away games. Must have earned some points for that lot.

The real issue is with the SFA and the 50/50 split but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that changing any time soon.

I’m expecting an attendance of 123,000 if Franny is sorting the briefs ;-)

  13. All set up for a super Sammi type finish – 2 overhead kicks to go to E.T.

    Probably about 100/1.

That sort of language and threat of violence is not becoming of someone of your professional status, there are many jannys the world over who would love to be in your position.
