Bet your novelty duck there are lessons to be learned

1033

Celtic probably anticipated the three match suspension Uefa imposed on Scott Brown following his red card for an off the ball incident against Barcelona, if they didn’t, they should have.  That’s not to say the decision is not “harsh”, as the club described it, as far as off the ball incidents go, this was a lesser offence, but it was a red card awarded for an off the ball incident nonetheless.

Are there lessons to be learned?  You can bet your novelty Celtic duck on it.

No more on this, or injuries, until late next week.  Absolute focus is required on the task ahead.  Ajax will arrive in town on Monday low on confidence, let’s take them.

A CQN’er has kindly donated two tickets for Tuesday’s game at Celtic Park against Ajax for the 1254125 appeal.  You can bid for them by silent auction by emailing your bid to ajax@celticquicknews.co.uk.

Please include telephone contact details.  Auction will close at 19:00 on Sunday.  The winning bidder will be notified on Sunday evening, tickets need to be paid for directly to the 1254125 MyDonate campaign before 12:00 on Monday or the tickets will be offered to an alternative bidder.

Many thanks for participating.

I have no doubt that Gerry considers himself a big Celtic man and that wants Celtic to do well and that he thinks that putting a rocket under some at CP is the best way to do it.

However, my distaste for him stems from the time when he was in an important position to represent our community and like many before and since, he let us down by being a minstrel boy to their prejudices and preferring to kiss some presbyterian ass.

He is now a rather solitary older man not fully accepted back into our fold and that is sad.

But he left the fold; he was not thrown out.

  14. 19-10-1957…… Reflections:

My Dad took my older brother to the 1954 Scottish Cup Final ( Celtic beat Aberdeen 2-1, thanks Sean Fallon ) but left me behind claiming that he could not look after two young children. I had to make do with seeing the team come down Crown Street in the Gorbals with the cup. The following year, 1955, we made the cup final again. I was 8 years old and saw Celtic come within a couple of minutes of winning but Clyde equalised. I went to the afternoon replay with my Dad ( what happened to you Jim, if you are reading ) and we lost 1-0. The following year Celtic again made the Scottish Cup Final ( 3 years on the trot ) and we lost 3-1. Both my Mum and Dad took me to the north enclosure. I remember well leaving the stadium to huge roars of a very large Hearts support cheering the cup presentation. I was devastated.

In 1956 Celtic made it to our first ever League Cup Final – I was there with my big brother- and we drew 0-0 on the Saturday against Partick Thistle. We won the replay and thanks to my schoolteacher at St Luke’s , Gorbals, I heard some of the BBC match commentary on the classroom radio.

On 19 October 1957 Celtic again made it to the League Cup Final and we were against Rangers. My Dad worked shifts and couldn’t go so my big brother Jim got the task of taking the 10 year old Garcia Lorca to Hampden. My Mum knitted me a huge, heavy wool scarf for the occasion. Rangers were favourites but the Celtic support turned up in the numbers we would all expect.

I treasure my memories from that sunny, slightly misty autumn day. At 2-0 at half time , could we really do it and , for me, after so many disappointments get to see Celtic win a major trophy. Despite going 3-0 up, I recall Billy Simpson’s headed goal at the Celtic end making the score 3-1. Surely it would not go wrong now. No fear, and the boys went on and made it 6-1. My brother decided that we should move to the upper end of the terracing to get a better view of the presentation. A penalty for Celtic… and at 6-1. I have written of this before but I vividly recall the man at the barrier almost beside himself at Willie Fernie. I knew we had won the cup but this guy knew something else. Don’t miss that penalty Willie. This result will live forever amongst Celtic people. Willie Fernie didn’t let us down.

Can you- a younger generation- imagine the scenes on that terracing? 7-1 and in a cup final. It was pure magic.

A few years after this Real Madrid would show the world how football should be played during the 1960 European Cup Final. A few years after that Celtic Football Club showed the world how football should be played in the European Cup Final in Lisbon.

1957 may seem like a long time ago but for those of us who had the privilege to be there that day we bear witness to something very special that happened.

Good luck to the Celts against Hibs and I look forward to my long trip to be at Celtic Park on Tuesday night to support the bhoys.
