Bet your novelty duck there are lessons to be learned

1033

Celtic probably anticipated the three match suspension Uefa imposed on Scott Brown following his red card for an off the ball incident against Barcelona, if they didn’t, they should have.  That’s not to say the decision is not “harsh”, as the club described it, as far as off the ball incidents go, this was a lesser offence, but it was a red card awarded for an off the ball incident nonetheless.

Are there lessons to be learned?  You can bet your novelty Celtic duck on it.

No more on this, or injuries, until late next week.  Absolute focus is required on the task ahead.  Ajax will arrive in town on Monday low on confidence, let’s take them.

A CQN’er has kindly donated two tickets for Tuesday’s game at Celtic Park against Ajax for the 1254125 appeal.  You can bid for them by silent auction by emailing your bid to ajax@celticquicknews.co.uk.

Please include telephone contact details.  Auction will close at 19:00 on Sunday.  The winning bidder will be notified on Sunday evening, tickets need to be paid for directly to the 1254125 MyDonate campaign before 12:00 on Monday or the tickets will be offered to an alternative bidder.

Many thanks for participating.

  1. Bamboo – except Hodgson wasn’t using ‘monkey’ in a derogatory manner, nor is the monkey the butt of the joke.

So we’re at a state where any reference to simians on the presence of black people is dicey. That’s patently ridiculous and as somebody else mentioned erodes the real campaign to end racism.

He certainly wasn’t doing it off his own bat two years on the trot……still wondering why he would not advise HM Government that it would not be a good idea?

“Black football players were-are taunted by racist fans using monkey gestures and noises.

Thats why a someone could easly take offence to Hogsons unthinking comment.”

Black footballers were /are also taunted by racist fans throwing bananas at blak players.

If a manager offered a tired looking player a banana at half time, would you consider that insensitive? Genuine question as I believe the kind of coverage issues such as this receive sets back the real fight against racism (….and not just anti-black racism).

Your missing the point. Hogson did use a monkey reference in respect to a black player.

I sure he didnt then stop and explain the context of using the word monkey.

He probably didnt engage his brain when he said it so now he’s learnt a hard lesson and hopfully he’ll be more diplomatic in his choice of language in future.

  9. I would say it is because Hogson is not a racist that he did not “explain the context”.

I think the press were right to hi-light Hogsons comment.

Racisim is not far below the surface in football.

There’s a sizable black population in england and many black footballers.

However I dont see many black faces on the terraces. Why do you think that is?

  13. Bamboo – I totally get your point but if somebody’s taken offence because they didn’t understand the joke that’s their problem.

  14. Bamboo

There aren’t any terraces. It’s all seated now. Been like that for 20 years.

I really think you have missed the point. It was not a racist remark.

Even the player Andros Townsend did not take offence.

It is important for anti racism that issues like this are put into context. In many ways the press coverage is pandering to the racists.

  16. bamboo

I am reluctant to step into what I regard as a non story. I had thought that very few people were upset about this incident once they’d heard the full story and it was mainly the right wing press that had an interest in stoking it.

A few anti-racist groups asked for an investigation, but an investigation is non-judgemental and is not condemnatory. However, keeping this alive serves to belittle real racism and the genuine fight there should be.

I can imagine that some groups were told that Roy Hodgson compared Townsend’s role to a monkey, without being aware of the content or context of the NASA joke, and the immediate under-informed reaction is to say that that is dead wrong.

As I understand the context and the joke, Roy Hodgson was trying to get right back Chris Smalling to pass the ball more often to Andros Townsend the right winger and used the NASA joke wherein the astronaut is told his job is to feed the monkey.

Now, in the joke, it is the astronaut who is the butt of the humour and not the monkey, who is portrayed as the more valuable component of the space flight. Chris Smalling could have more justifiably taken offence at being compared to the less useful monkey feeder/astronaut role. Since, I believe, neither player would satisfy the colour tones demanded by real racists, there is no equation between monkey and a derogatory term that can be drawn, except by someone determined to cause trouble or someone who misunderstands racism.

The word monkey has a meaning which can be totally devoid of racism. Yes, one should be careful not to compare or equate a black person to a monkey, given the history you quote, but this is palpably not one of those occasions where that comparison or equation was made with any derogatory overtones.

How many games in England do you go to??

I have lived here for a good few years and I know many “black” fans that go to games. I also know many who cannot afford to go and watch in the pub with many working class white lads.
