Bitter sweet accounts

1056

Detail in our annual accounts for the year to 30 June 2014, released yesterday, are bitter sweet.  It was a good year financially but the successes were underpinned by qualification for the Champions League.  This season’s revenue will be lucky to rise much above £50m, from last season’s £64m.

I see lots of comment on Peter Lawwell’s £400k bonus.  The key figure to concentrate on executive pay is the basic (in this case £524k), not the bonus.  Celtic executive pay, including manager, chief exec and scouts, should heavily incentivise qualification for the Champions League.  If we’re in the Champions League, all other objectives become possible.  Failure to qualify brings a range of risks; so the execs should feel the pain of failure in the pocket.

Basic pay should be appropriate for the work (this goes for all staff at the club, of course), but there is ample room to incentivise everyone, from executives, to kiosk staff, to stewards, on club performance or service objectives, as appropriate.  Would doing so tackle many of the stewarding and service issues we see regularly? Would be interesting to find out.

  1. For all the experts on here who can do a better job than lawwell or who think Celtic pay him to much money, stick a C.V. Into the club and make sure you put your required salary on it and see if you get the gig.

With all the downsizing going on your in with a shout HH good luck

  2. Open question

When sitting amongst 62,000 at CP, from years 2001 onwards, did you ever think that that level of attendance would last forever?

  3. Saint Stivs

Soccernomics makes the point about how small even the biggest football club is compared to businesses in other industries but is treated as if it is top level stuff.

What causes high wages in football is wage inflation from paying top players top money but that raising the overall wage level and creepage where those around players benefit by association.

Not much can be done about that unless supporters strike for lower player wages but what can be done is to introduce a discount factor into KPIs for CEO bonus if certain football targets are not met.

As regards the current payments they reflect football results last year so some adjustment should come next year but I would appoint a KPI Consultant to advise on CEO wage level and KPIs that meet all the objectives of a business.

  5. St Stivs,

The basic pay of CEO …in UK of Wood Gp may well be similar to PL’s , but I suspect his bonuses will put his salary at c £2.5m, and there are probably 3 or 4 other directors on £2m +.

I am not disputing PL is overpaid, but, equally you won’t get quality at 1/5 of the price.

My own view is that PL is a good, but not great CEO.

He does a decent job on the finances, but has Imho failed in a number of big strategic areas, namely increasing TV revenue, getting us into a better league , youth development and he has presided over a long term decline in attendances, which I suspect will get worse.

Stringer bell. I always thought that sort of attendance was amazing, especially for games against dunfermline, Kilmarnock etc. It couldn’t last. The economic downturn, the constant downgrading of the playing squad and of course the recent lack of opposition caused by the demise of der hun have all contributed to falling crowds

Think you answered your own question there, we had a team worth watching, getting entertained.

I realise we can’t compete transfer and wages wise with the elite but surely we deserve more than what seems acceptable from our board.

The support feels let down now, especially with a reincarnation on our doorstep and us going back the way to meet them.

    In a word, no.

We could not continue to pay the money we did for Players and the wages we paid at that time. Added to the fact about the predicted demise of deadco would ultimately have an impact on attendances.

Fans wanted and want a Team with Players that are of a quality that is befitting of our Club. Fans also want competition and above all to be winning trophies.

I am a Fan that wants to see quality players signed and to be winning trophies. Playing with passion and a swagger that kills teams. However, I am one of those that kevjungle refers to that until I wake up and realise the Board do not realise the same ambition. What I mean is I will continue as long as I am financially unable to do so.

Why, because all I want to do is go along and support my team, partly because of the Country where I live. Most of all because I love the Celtic.

There are many reasons why we cannot attract the Players we need: no investment by likes of Sky (arguably the biggest reason), Players opting to play for mediocre Teams because they pay big bucks, lack of competition, lack of investment by the Board. The Board cannot invest if the Fans stay away. All a vicious circle and until solutions are found, the crowds will continue to fall in my opinion.

I hope and pray solutions are found with the exception of one to aid required for sevco.

    I day say in a word, no…:)

  18. Coneybhoy,

I’d bite yer hand off for a 3-0 win tomorrow.

History shows we don’t win so convincing up there all that often though.

  19. Just over 15 minutes to kick off in tonight’s Big Game.

Hamilton, with 20 points from 9 games are looking to extend their lead at the top to 4 points. And to move 9 (NINE) points ahead of Celtic albeit they’d have then played 2 games more.

A win for Aberdeen would let them jump from 5th to 3rd (if they win by 1) or 2nd (if they win by 2), a point behind Hamilton and level with Dundee United, who could then claim top spot tomorrow.

Just for the thrill of being right, Jobo’s 5 X 20p singles tonight are –

3 or more goals in the game (evens)

    Hamilton to win (2/1)

Hamilton to win with 3 or more goals in the game (7/2)

Hamilton to win with Aberdeen to also score (9/2)

Marc Antoine Courier for 1st goal (13/2)

For the avoidance of doubt I think Hamilton will score first, score at least once more and win the game ;-)

If we were to judge the performance strictly on Celtic turnnover, then £50 million would be classed as failure given that this level was surpassed by both Martin O’Neil and Gordon Strachan years ago. £50 million is the equivalent of 50,000 supporters spending, contributing £1000 pa to the cause. That figure should be relatively easy to achieve for a club like Celtic even taking into account the economic impact on the support from the crash of 2007-8. The Corporate approach to football is not working for us. All very well being the at the top of the European financial wellbeing league, but even there, you have to ask, where were Hamilton Academical?

  22. Looking forward to Dingwall tomorrow. Friendliest away ground bar, none in my opinion.

Fancy 3.1 Celtic. Have just been to bookies and put a fiver each on Virgil at 16/1 and Jason at 20/1. Hoping history repeats itself as Virgil managed first goal up there last year.

We got two Strikers in but yet to play them together. One we bought and one on loan. Plenty are screaming out for two Strikers to be played. In my opinion we should give those two Strikers a chance to build up a partnership with the service they require. Guidetti has already proved himself in my book. Not so convinced with Scepovic but until he has a run of games with a partner I will give him the benefit of the doubt.
